I never did like the colour orange.
A little icon pops up in the bottom right-hand corner of my computer screen. The small rectangle of my minimized MSN conversation windows flashes orange.
Shelly says:
Hey Bri, are you there?
Thinking nothing of it, I close it and go back to writing my assignment. I push the thought of my depressed friend to the back of my mind.
Five minutes later, I see the icon flash orange again.
Shelly says:
I'm gonna guess you are busy or not there because you aren't replying... Anyway I just wanted to say goodbye and I will miss you. You are my best and only friend. Thank you so much for making me smile for only when I was talking with you was I ever able to forget my problems.
I think for a moment, before clicking the in the reply box and slowly tapping the keys on my keyboard.
Bri says:
Hey, I'm here, just kinda busy. What do you mean by what you said?
I knew exactly what she meant. I'd known it for a while.
Shelly says:
Just a very long goodbye and a sorry for leaving you also a thank you for being a friend before I go die..
I paused, horrified.
So I was right.
Bri says:
No, no dying.
I typed my reply slowly, biting my lip as the tears came to my eyes. Her message popped onto the screen a minute or so later.
Shelly says:
I'm sorry, Bri. But I can't take this anymore.
Bri says:
Yes you can…
Shelly says:
No, I can't. I'm really really sorry.
I shook my head in disbelief. The kidney failure and transplant…The friend who killed herself… The hate… The death threats she had received… It was all signs. And I ignored them. My fingers barely touched the keys as I typed my final reply.
Bri says:
Please, don't do this, Shell.
There came no reply. Shelly suddenly went offline. I closed the window and leant back in my chair, not believing what I had seen.
I lost track of time. I just sat there. Maybe five, ten, god, who knows, twenty minutes later, that MSN icon was flashing again.
The following message could not be delivered to the recipients:
Please, don't do this, Shell.
I never did like the colour orange.

Yes, this actually happened. I have no idea whether Shelly is still with us or not, but I know she probably would do this. I hope she hasn't.
