I had my first track meet yesterday. The only event that I did was to run the 1600 meter (a mile). I'm able to run three miles, because I was in Cross Country at the beginning of the year.

After I ran, I hurt all over, and was coughing a bit, off and on. About twenty minutes after I got on the bus to go home, I fell asleep. When I woke up I couldn't breathe, and I was coughing non-stop. This lasted for about an hour, and then we stopped to eat. My coach tried to help to calm me down, and get my breathing back down to normal, but it wasn't working. One of my friends, and my coach, called my dad, and he gave them permission to have me use an inhaler, because one of the girls on the team had a similar problem, and her inhaler with her.

About twenty or so minutes after using it, I my breathing was more regular, and my coughing less. When we got home, my dad took me to the hospital, and we were there for about four hours.

They gave me an inhaler, and told me not to do any running, or stressful physical activity until they could diagnose me, but they believe that I had an athletically induced asthma attack.

I've been running for four years now, and nothing like this has ever happened...quite honestly, it scared the s**t out of me. My issue isn't what to do, because I know what to do...it's just that after that, I don't know if I ever want to run again.

Yeah, yeah, I know about the whole "Fall off a horse just get right back on," thing, but honestly, this is NOT THE SAME.
Please, some input.

Don't give up something you love, just because of one incident, if you're given the all clear it could just have been a one off event that has not further impact beyond that.

i used to have asthma for 12 years, i used to have asthma attacks all the time when i was little, but it was a thing that i would 'have to live with' said my doctor . . . but now i only have them in the winter if i run alot, like last time i did cross country

Well asthma attacks are bad. I'm an inhaler kid myself so don't feel bad.

I'd keep running. I do Mixed Martial Arts and i basically just keep my inhaler not to far from me. I'd say run, but try not to long distance because you'll need to build up so to say.

Don't give up, but don't push yourself either.

Updates!
It's not too bad, but I still don't like the inhaler idea.
After my spring break (this upcoming week)
I will be back to practicing.
And see from there if I want to compete or not.

...Believe me...I had the same problem....But that was 3 years ago....Back when i first started playing county soccer for 10-11 year olds...I used to play so much soccer before that for the school team...and i used to love to run...MY parents took me to the doctor....she said that i should stop playing soccer for a while, but work on minor excercises, the kinds that help you gain more stamina...so after that, i started gaining stamina, and i was able to run and play soccer again...so you will be able to run...you probably just used up all of your stamina when you did the Cross Country run thing....

You most likely never ran that hard, did you try over doing it?
Sometime those kind of things can kick in later in life, my friend is the best swimmer at my school, he has the same thing.
So don't stop running, just have what you need with you at all times.

That's the thing, though.
I was pacing, and I wasn't even pushing.
I came in dead last, but I didn't care about that...as long as I didn't push too hard, because I know what can happen when you do.

I suggest waiting until they can diagnose you before you start running again. If it's serious and you don't wait it could possibly kill you. But if it isn't then I suggest pacing yourself while running.

my older bro had the same problem..oh and yeah the minor exercises idea worked for him too so i suggest doing that..but it'd be better if you do what the doctor tells you to..its probably for the best..
