Come here for information, questions, comments, suggestions, and complaints about the arena! ((fyi, the four NPC-ish types in the arena have profiles on page 25 of the profiles thread.)) This post will be updated as needed to keep the info reasonably current.
Current Arena Events: Sign-ups for the Timed Monster Battle Tournament are ongoing! Inquire at the desk in the arena, usually staffed by a BillBob. In the main arena: all is quiet... Downstairs, some levels below ground floor: Saito, Raul, and a BillBob are fighting their way down to attempt to rescue Christie, who was kidnapped. -Practice rooms one level below the main arena are always open for sparring and training; please keep track of which place you are in.-

(Rules for the tournament may be changed at any time before the actual tournament starts, with notification to be sent to those who have already signed up.) Here’s how the battles will go for the tournament: You will enter the Arena and generate a random number (1-20 for the first round) to decide which monster you will fight (no repeats, so if a number has been used already, it will be rounded up or to the nearest unused number, up or down)... then the monster handler will announce you and the monster, and roll a 100-sided die to decide whether you get first attack or the monster does… 1-50 you attack first, 51-100 monster gets first strike. To attack: write up a description of your character’s actions and what the full extent of the attack is supposed to do, then choose post action either random number 1-100, or roll dice 1-100-sided. The response posted for the monster will use the number generated when you posted to call the hit and the extent of the damage done, after which there will be a description of the monster’s attack... and the number generated when that is posted is what you will use in your response to say whether you were hit or not and how badly. (Basically, player’s roll determines if the monster is hit, monster’s roll determines if the player is hit.) Damage is determined by the strength of the attack, modified according to the following scale: 1-10 miss 11-20 very little damage 21-50 partial damage 51-90 moderate damage 91-100 maximum damage +20 to roll for initial finding of a monster’s random weakness +10 to roll for utilizing a monster’s main or random weakness +5 to roll for utilizing a secondary weakness -10 to roll against a monster’s main strength -5 to roll against a monster’s secondary strengths If your character has strengths or weaknesses, please also figure those in when you are posting what sort of effect the monster’s attack has. Please don’t just say you are immune to a particular attack; even if you are, if the monster had a really good roll for a powerful attack, at least say your character was surprised or something, and in the event of a miss, always say how the attack was dodged or blocked or whatever. Any immunity or special defenses your character has should be pre-determined and in your character’s profile, otherwise they should not be used as justification for modifying a roll. You cannot be immune to everything, and please don’t try to change hits, after they have been called according to what you rolled; we want this to be a fair contest and god-moders will be disqualified. Originality, humor, and/or good writing may potentially be rewarded. You will have 5 attacks (one attack to a post) in which to defeat the monster. This is your time-limit. If you don’t defeat the monster in time, you can still sign up to try against another monster as long as there are still empty places in the original list of 20 slots. If you want to practice using this system, there will be at least one practice battle in the Main Arena before the tournament begins, while people are still signing up.
Every monster has predetermined characteristics that will not be changed during battle, and these are: Name: semi-random funness Defining Characteristic: some notable feature to be talked up by the announcer 1 main strength: attacks that don’t work well against the monster 3 secondary strengths: attacks that semi-don’t work as well against the monster 1 main weakness: what the monster is most weak against 3 secondary weaknesses: what the monster is only partially weak against 1 completely random crazy-fun weakness: so randomly insane it has to work Basic Description: size, general appearance, methods of attack, vocalizations Random Prize: some crazy thing you can get from defeating that specific monster
First-round monsters will not have any actual immunities to anything, but second- and third-round monsters might. Prizes won by fighting first-round monsters may be used against second- or third-round monsters... if you think they'd actually be of use. Spectators are allowed to shout suggestions, if requested by the contestant currently in the main arena.
After the tournament, you can come back whenever and fight battles against monsters of your choosing, or against other players, with or without time limits or rolling dice, but for the tournament we’re using this system, and the monster-specific prizes will only be awarded for monsters defeated during the tournament.
