Aura was puzzled because she had just hatched and she was already seeing two more dragons of the same age near her. She had expected to have hatched and been alone for all of her life, but the shock of seeing two more dragons- by the looks of it a girl and a boy- had left her speechless.
Amethyst didn't break the gaze, but she seemed to relax when she saw that Aura was a friend. Amethyst leaned around to Aura's back, and nipped the end of her tail, picking it up into the air and dropping it. Aura looked surpised and didn't react, so Amethyst did it again. This time Aura croaked as loud as she could, trying to be scary, but couldn't make a roar as she was still a baby. Tycor laughed and then so did Amethyst. Aura just stared back at them looking hostile until she realised how funny she must have sounded, and then laughed herself.
Tycor shuffled nearer and the three dragons were now sitting in a circle, all facing inwards. Silently, they all leaned into the circle, and touched snouts together at the same time. All three had snouts touching for a few seconds, until a little spark of light appeared where their snouts touched, and they broke apart. The light that had been in the middle of them had split into three when they moved back, and was glowing at the end of their noses.

It travelled slowly up Aura's nose until it touched her left ear, and seemed to sink into her, making a silver marking of a star on her ear.
The light that had been on the end of Amethyst's nose was now moving. Slowly, it was travelling sideways across her jaw until it met her right cheek, where it sunk in, imprinting a little silver star on her cheek.
Tycor looked down his nose at the light, where it glowed for a few seconds, and then dissappeared. He looked across at Aura and Amethyst, who both had silver stars in different places on thier faces.
Where is my star? I can't see it! Have I got one? Tycor asked Amethyst.
She grinned at him in a dragony way, but didn't reply. Tycor's stomach lurched with the thought that he had not got a special marking, and he lowered his face.
Why are you sad? You have a mark like the other two. It was Esme, Tycor's Rider.
I do? Tycor thought back. Where is it then? I can't see it!
Thats because its on the end of your nose! Esme got up from the bed and picked Tycor up, taking him over to the mirror in the corner of the room. Tycor looked at his reflection, puffing his shoulders up so they looked bigger and stronger.
Look at your nose, not your muscles! Esme laughed. Tycor's gaze switched immediately to his face, where he saw his own sliver star marking. The centre of the star was at the centre of his nose, and the rest of the star covered his mouth when it was closed, and stretched almost up to his eyes.

Beth gently rubbed Amethysts star with her little finger.
'Whats this then?' she addressed the whole room, dragons, elves and humans alike.
She lifted Amethyst onto her lap and was shocked to feel her grow in her hands...

Soon after Athymst and Tycor thought of a great idea they went over far from Aura while Aura was trying to catch her tail, soon they came back and told Aura the plan once they had consulted. Aura we want to teach you to fly they both thought to Aura. YAY flying i cant wait i love flying i tryied before but i wasnt quite sure what to do gerry walked herself over to Tycor and Amythst and they slowly brought her up into the mid air. Amethyst and Tycor looked at each other, a miscevious glint in their eyes.
Then they both rushed forwards at Aura, knocking her far over and off the bed, she began spiralling down to the ground.
Flap you idiot! came Amethysts thoughts from above.
The she looked down, and the ground seemed scarily close.
Tycor and Amethyst sighed and flew under her, catching her on their backs and flying back up to the bed.
They took off again, laughing and swooping around. Aura watched enviously, then curled up to sleep, as far away rfom the edge as possible.
'Tycor? Whats that star thing?' asked Esme

as Aura was curled up she was thinking about flying. She wanted to do it so bad so she started trying and wouldnt stop until she got it. She was sure she would be better at them in something.

The Riders watched as their dragons played together.
“So what are those silver marks on their faces?” Beth asked.
“I don’t know. There hasn’t been anything like this in the stories. Maybe it is some sort of bond between them, when they put their snouts together. Humans and elves no almost nothing about dragons and they always amaze us. I don’t think the dragons themselves know what they are. I’ll ask Tycor if he knows what it is.” Esmé was silent for a minute and the others knew she was talking to Tycor.
Tycor? What’s that star thing?
I don’t know. It just happened when we touched noses.
“He doesn’t know what it is,” Esmé told Beth and Gerry.
I have an idea, little one.
What is it? Esmé asked her dragon.
Go to the wise woman of the village ask her about dragons. Don’t tell her three have hatched though, we want to be un-noticed for as long as possible.
All right. Good idea, thank you. Esmé said. “I’ll be back in an hour; there is something I have to do.”
“Ok…Are you going to tell us what it is?” Beth said.
“I would, but it might not work and I don’t want to get your hopes up.” Esmé went out of the pub and jogged into the centre of the village, asking people where the wise woman lived.
“She lives in that hut,” a man said, pointing to a hut on the edge of the village.
“Thank you.”
Within an hour Esmé returned to the hut breathless. She had got her questions answered by the wise woman, and was exited by the answers. Esmé burst into the room and jumped onto the bed.

“The wise woman told me a lot! I know what the markings are.”
“Tell us then!” Gerry said.
“I want to tell you all together. Link yourself and your dragon to my mind and I will tell you,” Esmé said, calling Tycor, who flew across onto her lap. The other dragons flew back to their owners.
The wise woman said that when baby dragons bond, they produce a special magic which is very old and not well known. A speck of light, just like we saw, will split into the number of dragons there are, and sink into their faces. It looks beautiful, but also has purposes.
When one of the dragons who shares a mark with another becomes in danger, the dragons who share his mark immediately know. They can see in their mind the other dragon, and know where to go to help them. The dragons are also able to talk to each other through their minds, just like we can through our mouths. The last and most important thing is that the dragons can share energy. If one dragon is wounded in battle, and another is fine, then the wounded dragon can be given some of the healthy dragon’s energy. The ill dragon can then get slightly better, and even fully heal, depending on how much energy the healthy dragon can send.

So…What if one dragon gives too much of his energy to another?
Amethyst asked.
Then he will die. Tycor replied, knowing the answer because he and Esmé shared all of their experiences. Tycor had been in her mind at the wise woman’s house, and had heard everything, while also teaching Aura to fly back in the inn.

They remained in the inn for several weeks, until the dragons were no longer able to fit in the room, and were almost fully grown, and large enough to ride.
It was then that they moved back to the forests, sleeping outside as they had before, on their dragons they quickly approached the border. And on their dragons they enjoyed every minute of the journey.

*Flashback*
Tycor lifted up his wing so that the bright sunlight woke up his Rider. She groaned and rolled over, hiding her face from the sunlight against his stomach. Tycor laughed and moved away, so that Esmé had no choice but to wake up, as it was too bright to go back to sleep again.
What time is it? Esmé asked him.
Time for you to wake up! He replied. We are going to fly today!
What? Are you strong enough yet to get up into the air with my weight as well as yours? Esmé said, standing up and putting away her sleeping bag.
You underestimate me, if you think me not strong enough to carry your puny weight! Tycor replied.
All right then. But if you can’t get up into the air then I will be able to say ‘I told you so.’ Esmé laughed and put her pack on, waking up both her friends and their dragons.
It’s a bet. Tycor said, and bent down so that Esmé could get onto his back. He was much bigger than her now, with a massive wings span and thick leg muscles. Esmé only reached up to his knee, and he was bigger and heavier than Aura and Amethyst, with larger wings. His spikes were getting dangerously sharp and large, and Esmé avoided them carefully.
She swung herself into the saddle she had made in her spare time, while Tycor had hunted and grown. Beth and Gerry had also made a saddle for their dragons while they had been hunting.
“What are you doing?” Gerry asked Esmé, who was now sitting in the saddle comfortably.
“What do you think?” Esmé replied, “Tycor is taking me for a ride!”
Ask them to get breakfast while we are gone. Tycor said to Esmé, and she repeated this question to her two friends.
“You think we will stay? And pass off the chance to ride our dragons?” Beth said.
“Erm…No?” Esmé said.
“That’s right! We are so coming with you!”

Care to take a ride? Aura asked Gerry, and Gerry climbed up into the saddle. Beth did this on the other side of the clearing.
“We’ll have to take off one by one; there isn’t enough space to go up at the same time!” Esmé said, “I’m going first!”
Tycor bent his legs and you could see his leg muscles tensing beneath his scales, and spread his wings out. They nearly filled the whole of the clearing. Esmé looked across at Gerry and Beth and shouted across to them.
“Wish me luck!”
But before either of them could reply, Tycor had jumped and Esmé looked down at her friends disappearing faster and faster as Tycor rose higher, beating his wings quickly. They seemed to rise higher and higher until they were above the clouds, and Esmé couldn’t even see the ground anymore.
That was a fast ascent! She exclaimed, leaning close to Tycor to be more streamlined. Tycor began to stop flying higher, and levelled off. His wings slowed down until they were cruising slowly through the sky, waiting for the others.
Three minutes later, Beth appeared breathless beside Esmé, a look of pure joy upon her face.
“That was amazing!” She shouted across to Esmé, who was actually quite far away. Tycor and Amethyst had kept slightly apart so their wings brushed each other on the down stroke, but not so near that they collided.
Aura and Gerry appeared a few minutes later beside them, and she looked happy too.
“Wow…So this is what it feels like to fly!” Gerry said.

She knows nothing about flying yet! Tycor told Esmé, Let me show you what flying is about!
Before Esmé could do anything, she felt herself seeing through Tycor’s eyes, and wondered what had happened.
What’s this? She asked him.
You are seeing through my eyes. Now feel this. Tycor suddenly closed his wings and dropped through the sky, becoming quicker and quicker as he dived. He had flattened out his body so that nothing would slow him down, and as the air raced past them, Esmé realised how fast they must actually be going. A second later Tycor had dropped through the clouds, and Esmé could see the forest below them coming closer and closer as they raced towards it.
A few seconds before they would have hit the trees, Tycor opened his wings and flapped furiously. Slowly they levelled off, and when they were going parallel to the forest, Esmé looked down. They were a metre above the treetops. If Tycor had waited a second longer to slow down, then they would have gone straight through the trees and crashed into the ground.
That was…That was amazing! Do it again! Esmé said, and happily rubbed the scales of his neck as he began to gain altitude again.
This is the first time I have flown and shared my joy with another. I’m glad you like it! Tycor smiled, and Esmé could feel his unrestrained happiness fill her up, until she felt like she would burst with joy.

Amethyst wings spread out, catching the breeze and gliding through the air. It was so peaceful up here...
Beth watched as Tycor plummeted down to the ground, Esmé holding onto his saddle tight. She laughed as Aura got a similar idea and began to drop, carefully dodging the clouds.
'Amethyst?'Beth asked
Yes? came the reply
What does it feel like to fly through a cloud?
Amethyst did not reply, and Beth was begining to wonder why when she realised they were directly above a huge, blackish grey storm cloud.
Then she dropped like a stone, through the cloud unlike the other two, who had doged around them.
Beth instantly regretted asking as she felt water hit her. By the time they emerged, she was soaked through.
Gerry and Esmé watched laughing.

Tycor, Aura and Amethyst had crossed the border of Luivia that morning, and were now entering Taekla. This country was large and dangerous, and even more so because of the castle at the other end of it. That was where King Lucifer lived, and his army lived with him around the castle.
The Riders and their dragons had not seen any soldiers or threats yet- probably because they had been flying too high for anyone to see them. They were looking for a sheltered place to spend the rest of the day and night, and so far none of them had spotted anything. They had been flying all day, and it was nearly dinner time. The dragons needed to hunt, and the Riders needed to rest.
What is that? It looks like a clearing with a lake. I'll go and have a look. If I don't come back up above the clouds in two minutes then you will know that it is a good place to sleep. Tycor said, and angled him self downwards, descending slowly.
When Esme and Tycor broke through the bottom line of clouds, Esme spotted the place that Tycor had seen, and it looked perfect. It was a large clearing in the middle of the forest, and had a deep lake in the centre of the open space. It looked sheltered, and safe. A few deer were grazing on the edge of the lake, and Tycor slowed down and quieted his wing beats. He crept up behind the deer, flying just a metre or so above them, and grabbed one of the deer with his claws. Esme reached down off Tycor and stabbed the other through the heart before it could move. The last deer bolted back into the forest but neither Tycor or Esme tried to get it back. They could have it tomorrow.
Dinners ready! Esme laughed, and Tycor landed.

The three dragons and their riders sat that night around a fire, both grimacing at the others eating habits. The dragons ate the meat raw off the bone, which made the riders feel sick, however, the dragons couldn't believe their riders would RUIN perfectly good meat by cooking it...
They all talked as they ate, telling stories of the legendary dragon riders from the past, Morzan, Murtaugh and Eragon.
They were all so distracted they didnt even assign watches for that night. Their draons surrounded them, keeping them safe, and all six seemed to seep peacefully. If only they could see inside Beths head...

*dream* Beth found herself in a long corridor, with doors all along it. The doors were all shut, and locked, with bars fitted over small square cut into the wood. It was a horrible, dark place and Beth itched to escape it. She wandered to the end and opened the door she found there. She cried out in shock when she walked in. There were bodies everywhere, all dead. They were covered in blood, and no onw was left alive. She looked around and saw Esmé lying with a sword through her. She was dead. So was Gerry. An arrow having pierced through her armour. Beth felt sick. Her friends were dead, there was no one left. 'Amethyst!'she shouted with her mind 'Amethyst! Please help me!' Amethyst not replying could only mean one thing. She was dead. Then Beth heard a noise. A faint noise, but a familiar one. She turned to see Kassian lying in the corner of the room. A wound in his stomach bleeding. 'No!' Beth shouted, not knowing that her sleeping form was now tossing and turning, and she was talking, shouting out loud. She ran over to him. Knelling beside him. Pulling him up to sit upright against the wall. Her brother. She had found her brother. She would not let him die now. Not after everything she had gone through to save him. She held his hand and tried desperatly to stop the bleeding. A hand touched her shoulder and she turned to see Toby looking down at her. He held a sword in his hand. She looked in disgust as she saw it matched exactly the wounds in both Esmé and Kassian. She pushed his hand away and stood up. 'Why wont you leave me alone!?' she shouted. Her voice bouncing off the walls in the silence. He looked away, wiping the sword on his cloak. Not saying a word. Then he looked up at her and grinned. 'You don't want me to go.' he replied. 'Admit it.' 'NO.' 'You only hate me because i got close to you. Closer than anyone has got before. Except of course him.' he motioned to Kassian. 'You're dead.' Beth looked him in the eyes. 'I killed you. You're dead. Dead people dont come back!' 'Well thats a shame.' Beth heard him say. 'Because i guess ten seconds ago was the last time you saw your dear brother alive.' she turned and saw with horror that he was telling the truth-Kassian was dead. A tear ran down her cheek. she drowned out his words. 'You're not real. You're in my head. You're dead!' she shouted the last, and he continued to grin. 'Could a dead person do this?' he whispered in her ear and he stabbed her through the stomach. She felt pain, and screamed, holding her hands over the wound. She collapsed to the floor, and awoke to find five pairs of woried eyes looking at her. she jumped, and almost ran away. Then she jerked back to reality. It had all been a dream...a horrible dream. Obviously she still had some issues which neeeded sorting.

Once she had convinced the others she was fine, and spent time explaining the dream to them, causing many jokingly annoyed faces from Esmé, Gerry and Amethyst at being killed, and Aura and Tycor for not being in the dream, she retreated to a small group of trees where she could spend some time alone to think about the dream. She asked Amethyst to stay out of her head for a while, snapping at her when she tried to follow. She felt badly about that, and Amethyst had seemed hurt by her coldness.
When she was certain she was alone, she pulled up the bottom of her shirt and looked at her stomach, just to make sure. There was a bruise there she didnt remember getting, but she was sure it didnt have anything to do with the dream...it couldn't...
She sat like that for a long time, all alone, peaceful, before a blanket of sleep fell over her again.
This time, it wasn't so much a clear dream, it was flashes of images, a large cavern with the sound of water, blood, Tobys face as he pushed the sword into her stomach, and the sound of Kassians breathing as it got fainter and fainter. Then she felt a peircing pain in her stomach and she screamed again.
Her eyes flew open to show a man, dressed in the royal armour of King Lucifer, gripping tightly onto a sword which he had stabbed into her stomach, in the same place as Toby had in her dream. The man dropped, two arrows sticking out of his back. And Beth looked up to see Esmé and Gerry stood, both with their bows raised. The last thing she remember was Amethysts thoughts saying something to her over and over again which she couldnt understand, and then everything went balck and she fell to the ground, happy that for once, she had no dream.

 :big: *The day Aura learnt to fly* :big: During the journey to the border, Aura was determined to fly she saw the others flying with their riders, that made her even more determined than ever. As she was sitting on Gerry’s horse she decided to try there. Aura flung herself into the air but she didn’t put enough strength into it so she plonked back down onto the horse, as Aura slipped Gerry grabbed her quickly. What did you do that for you could have killed yourself??? Aura looked back at Gerry but didn’t answer she was to determined to fly, she wanted it so bad. She tried again and this time flung herself right into the air she had flung herself into the air so high that she had enough time to start flapping. She flapped as hard as she could and found that she was floating. I’m flying, I’m flying Gerry acknowledged that Aura was flying and was so happy for her, Gerry knew what it was like to be the so determined to do something. Aura flew over to the other dragons and called for Tycor as Beth’s dragon Amethyst was closer. I can fly look, I knew I would do it Amethyst and Tycor saw that she had flown all the way to Beth’s horse and saw that it was true. They all went on Gerry’s horse and sat down and Aura told the 2 dragons how she did it. Later they played and played until they came to an obstacle. "What are we going to do now it will take us hours to climb this?" Gerry exclaimed They all looked at the 3 dragons on Gerry’s horse as they had settled there when they stopped. “Well they are too young to fly they may have grown a bit but they are still growing and we might interrupt their growth." Gerry said instantly as she saw that they were all looking at them. They all decided that at last they would climb the mountainous hill. A few hours later when they had finished climbing the mountainous hill they were very close to the border. "Yes we are nearly there, I can’t wait!" Esme said "But we must be careful, there may be things that we don’t know waiting for us." Beth said cautiously "Like what?" Gerry asked " Well things you know?!" Beth explained "Ok then." Gerry replied As they reached to the border managing not to get stuck into obstacles the dragons were thrilled with the journey. They played for the entire journey except for when they had to settle down because they stopped but apart from that they had so much fun. We should do this again more often Aura thought to everyone Yeah well I’m sure we all will be again.

Tycor ripped the leg off a deer and chewed loudly. Aura looked across at him and giggled.
Why are you making so much noise? She asked him.
Why not? Does it displease you? Tycor replied.
No... It just... You sound just like a male!
Wake up Aura! He is a male! Amethyst joined the conversation. She started chewing on her deer's neck louder and louder, cracking the bone with her sharp teeth.
I hear something... Tycor said, stopping eating and standing up. He shook Esme awake and muttered to her through his mental link. There are people coming. Aura and Amethyst know. I can hear about thirty moving, but I can smell fifty more! Some of them must be standing still.
Thank you Tycor. I have my sword, and we will fight if they threaten us. Esme walked up his back, and sat in the saddle. She unsheathed her sword and looked around. It was very dark and she couldn't see anyone. How far away are they?
They are coming closer and closer. They seem to be trying to be quiet. Do they forget how sharp a dragon's hearing is? Tycor stood up as high as he could, and faced the way the soldiers are coming.
Shall we wake the others? Esme asked him.
We should. I will tell Aura and Amethyst to wake them.
Aura heard the message and walked over to Gerry silently, licking her on the face to wake her up. It worked, and Gerry stood up silently and grabbed her bow. She walked up Aura's back and sat in the saddle. Aura began to explain what was happening, while Amethyst waked Beth. They were all listening as hard as they could atop their dragons, weapons in hands, a minute later.

Voice emerged from the darkness of the trees. They were threatening.
'One move and your dragons are dead.'
Gerry, Beth and Esme looked at each other, not quite sure what to do.
Their instincts kicked in, and a dagger and several arrows flew towards the trees.
There was a sound of moving, and the whistle of arrows soaring through the air.
'Brisingr!' they all cursed at the same time.
'Jinx!'Beth thought to her self, but was stopped by the thought that not only could Amethyst hear her thoughts, and that was a bit stupid to be thinking now, and second because suddenly three bursts of light appeared, green, purple and brown. They exploded, and all the arrows disintergrated in flames. A wall of fire stretched before them, and they all froze with shock. The mysterious hiders took that as an opportuniy to spring out from the trees, grabbing all three riders and pointing their bows once agen at the dragons, except this time so their riders could see the bows, and they were too near to be stopped if released. All six immedietly froze, not daring to move a muscle.

"We said we would kill your dragons if you attacked," the leader of the ambush said. He was tall and was an elf. His blade was long and twisted. "And you still attcked. That means your dragons are dead."
Tycor stepped infront of Aura and Amethyst, instinctively acting as the male and trying to protect the females. Aura and Amethyst felt quite flattered. Tycor raised up on his back legs, Esme clinging on, and roared as loud as he could. His low roar made birds flap frantically from trees and seemed to shake the earth. Amthyst felt a vibration under her feet.
I'd like to see you try! Tycor projected his voice with such power that everyone in the clearing heard it and flinched. The leader of the ambush didn't flinch, just shouted, "CHARGE!". Every man jumped forward and attcked, and Tycor, Aura and Amethyst immediately began to fight for their lives.
Tycor ripped the heads off four soldiers straight away, then swung his tail and knocked over ten more. While they were on the ground, he stabbed them with his talons, and ripped open their throats. Tycor didn't notice one man that had snuck up behind him, and as the man was about to stab the dragon's back leg, he was shot down by one of Gerry's arrows. Amethyst was standing in a pool of blood, more blood flying around every second. Her claws seemed to be alive and ferocious. Aura was holding them off her rider easily, by swishing her tail when they got too near. The three riders fought from atop their dragons, and killed many men too. Then, as suddenly as it started, the order was called to retreat. The men stepped back and sheathed their weapons.
"We did not know that you could fight so well, or use magic." The leader said. Over half his men were dead already.
Then you were foolish to attack. Tycor told him.

"Even so, you are still to come with us. We have hidden archers, and they will shoot at your dragon's unprotected areas, like the eyes, belly and neck. They will be dead before you can heal them, if you even know how to do it."
Esme looked around for the archers but could see no-one. She supposed that they must be hidden in the trees.
I can smell them. They are hidden in the trees. There are more men coming- reinforcements. We cannot fight a whole army without a scrape, however well we did there. And you used magic by accident. We do not know any of the words, or how to say them, or what rules there are. It was purely by accident that a curse you all knew turned out to be magic. Tycor said to Esme.
"What do you want us for?" Gerry asked.
"We want you and your dragons because you are riders. We need you to help in the war against Lucifer. And to train, beforehand."
"You are trying to force us to fight for you?" Beth said.
"Threatening us is not the best way to persuade us to join you," Esme laughed. Gerry and Beth giggled, and Aura laughed quietly.
"We are taking you with us, or we will kill you. You are to pledge yourself to us, then to train. Then you will fight for us." The leader said.
"We will do what we please. You cannot force us." Esme said out loud, then said to Tycor, Be ready to fly.
"Oh, I think we can. We will kill you if you dont come with us! You cannot get away!"
"And what if we fly?" Esme protested. Tycor spread his wings to prove the point.

"Then we shoot you down!"
"What if I can stop your arrows with my magic?" Esme said confidently. She couldn't really do this, but she was trying to trick them and explore how completely the leader had planned this.
The ambushers were silent for a moment, because they had no answer. Esme smiled, but scowled when she saw what the leader did next. He looked at one of his archers that was standing beside him, and the archer smiled. He raised his bow and pointed it straight at Amethyst's eye. Tycor stood up again and roared.
Dont you dare! If you do that then I will rip you apart into little pieces and eat you! After I have destroyed your army of course!
An elf fitted an arrow to the string of the bow and pulled it back. Before anyone could do anything, he had let go of the arrow and it flew straight and fast into Amethyst's eye. The dragon screamed in pain and reared. Beth tried frantically to stay on her back, but there was nothing she could do to help. She didnt know how to heal with magic.
That...Is....IT!" Tycor jumped forward and bit the head off the archer, splattering the elf's blood all over the leader of the army. Tycor then killed three more men, by gorging claw marks in their chests, and Aura followed suit. But the leader of the ambush didn't even move. He lifted his hand and brought it down sharply, and ten men pointed their bows at Tycor and Aura.
"You come with us, and we will heal Amethyst. If you don't come, then she will die. The arrow has gone deep."
We have no choice. Esme said.
We shall surrender. Tycor spoke again into the mind of the leader, who smiled. Most of his men were dead, but he had the dragon riders.

Beth stood up off the ground, brushing dirt and leaves off her cloak.
She pushed and elbowed away the ambushers who were attempting to grab her. She had just got out of the hands of one set of guards. She did not need another.
'Get. Your. Dirty. Hands. OFF. Me!' she shouted. then walked forward calmly, pushing through people, and picked up her dagger.
She frowned at the skeptical looks on both Esme and Gerrys face.
'What? i like this dagger...' she shrugged and stood beside Amethyst neck, rubbing it gently, saying soothing words. But they couldnt soothe the pain of the arrow.
'It...hurts'amethyst sounded weak.
It was then that all her calmness dissappeared and she broke down.
'WELL?' Beth practically screamed at the leader. 'HELP HER!'
she knew she sounded spoilt, but right now she was only concerned with her dragon.
She glanced over at the other two, still astride their dragons. They nodded, they too understood she was not being spoilt. Thank god for that, at least they were on her side, as Aura, Tycor, Esme and Gerry all looked angry at what had been done to Amethyst. They were dragged off, seperated by large crowds of people. Keeping just insight only because their dragons towered huge above the people.

Amethyst padded along, her eye feeling completely better. It was good that they hadn't killed all the spellcasters, or she would have been unable to be healed.
That was a cruel cruel thing they did to me. She muttered to Beth.
Her Rider rubbed her neck and tickled the scales behind her ear. Its all over now, dont worry.
Im not. Amethyst said, sharper than she meant, and felt sad when Beth flinched.
Why are you being cold? Beth asked, pulling back her arm from tickling her dragon.
Im sorry. Amethyst said, and she meant it.
Tycor slowed down his pace so he was walking beside Amethyst and Aura.
I wonder where they are taking us...? He said. They had been marching for an hour, and were surrounded by men. They could not escape even if they had wanted to.
To their headquarters, I expect. Aura suggested.
You're right.
They were boxed in on all sides by trees. The forest had thickened, and little streams ran between the trees. There was lots of wildlife, from moles and squirrels, to birds and deer. Seeing these made the dragons hungry.
"We are not far away now." The leader shouted back.
Thank god! I am starving! They better feed us when we get there, because they interupted my meal this morning when they attacked!

They stopped in another clearing, which was empty of trees, and had another lake in the centre. The lake was large and the water was a dark forbidding colour. The clearing was big enough to fit forty dragons in, and all the space that was not occupied by water was sandy with rocks. A cliff face ran along one edge of the clearing, to their left. It was this way that the leader led them.
The leader stepped up to the cliff face and pressed his hand against the rock. The section he had his hand on looked just like every other section, and was no different in any way, yet they sensed something special about this part of the cliff face. A long phrase was muttered under the leader's breath, and everyone watched. There was nothing to see for a few moments, but Tycor looked up and saw a rock falling down the cliff. It hit other rocks, and dislodged them, and started a mini rockslide, which grew and grew until thousands of rocks were hurtling down towards them. But still the leader did not move.
"Are we going to just stand here and get impaled?" Gerry asked, but one of the guards shushed her.
We'll just have to wait... And trust them. Aura said to calm Gerry down.
The rocks got nearer and nearer, and the largest one knocked off a bump in the cliff, and flew over the edge. It fell freely for a few seconds, but then hit the ground and sunk in, right to the left of the leader's foot. A few seconds later the rest of the rocks cascaded down, each time landing dangerously close to them, but never hitting them.

When the rocks stopped falling, the Riders were left wondering what the point of the rockslide was. Then the leader stepped forward and dissappeared into the pile of rubble and rocks that lay against the cliff wall. More men began to follow him, and dissappear also. When it came to Tycor's turn to go through the cliff, he stepped forward and swept the rocks out of the way with his snout and legs. It took a minute or two, because the rocks were so heavy, but no-one stopped him. When all the rocks had gone, Tycor looked forward and couldn't believe his eyes. There was a hole in the cliffside!
He stepped forward cautiously and went inside. He seemed to be in a sort of cave, with a large passageway leading deeper into the mountainside. The other dragons stepped inside, and the rest of the soldiers followed, and one man spoke in the ancient language. The rocks sprung into place to cover the gap, and the cave was immediately plunged into darkness. It was lucky that dragons could see in the dark. The temperature also dropped considerably, and Esme found herself shivering.
Stalactites hung from the ceiling, which was made of rocks, and was massively high. There was a constant dripping noise, and a rushing noise of an underground river.
So this is where the Varden live now...?

They three riders jumped down, and followed through the corridors, keeping together and close to their dragons. They were being led through several corridors, and although they tried to memorise their route, they could not. Beth was sure they did that on purpose. Eventually they emerged in a huge room, it had a cold marble floor and large pillars, it gave off an air of importance, and the majority of the people who had followed them dissapeared from sight, leaving only the leader of their little...or big...ambush and a few men behind.
'I have a baaad feeling about this' Beth thought to Amethyst
'So do the the others.' she replied.
The huge stone doors were pushed shut, which took some effort. Obviously they only used them for 'special' occasians. They stood, awaiting their fate. The silence so loud it made their ears ring.

"Welcome," the leader said, lifting his arms above his head, "To the Varden."
No-one moved or spoke.
"Please sit down."
The Riders sat down beside their dragons, and the dragons rested themselves in a crouch. The leader joined them on the floor. There were no chairs.
"I am sorry how we have had to treat you to bring you here," the leader said. Esme was shocked that he sounded very sad. "How can I ever apologise to your dragon for shooting her?" the leader said to Beth.
"You may speak with her to apologise yourself."
How can I ever be forgiven by you? the leader said to Amethyst.
What you did was wrong. We may have come of our own freewill if you hadn't forced us.
I am sorry.
You have been forgiven. Amethyst said, looking him straight in the eye.

'We need your help.' the leader began simply. 'We are too weak to fight King Lucifer, and we need you to join us.' Esme, Beth and Gerry nodded to show they were listening.
'We need tobe sure we have your alliance in the fight against Lucifer. Can we depend on you?'
They nodded. Then Beth spoke.
'You may depend on us to fight, on your side, but we will not become attatched to the Varden. We wish to return home when we have rescued my brother. Prince Kassian.' several heads turned at this name.
'Very well, i can tell it would be pointless to argue. We shall have to attempt to gain your alliance later.'
'I'll take that as a warning.' Beth whispered to Esme. She nodded.
'We need to find my brother.' she told the leader, 'I gather you have heard of him from the fact that you all looked up when i said his name.'
'So you are the princess who has caused so many problems for King Phillip?' he looked deep in thought. 'I hope you were not followed.' he turned to a man stood beside him and told him. 'Find the Riders and their dragons somewhere to stay, and get the food and clean clothes.' He bowed to the three, and left the room. Their guide leading them out through a door on the opposite side of the room.
He hadn't agreed to help them find Kassian yet.
'Well that was easy.' muttered Gerry as they left.
They all thought the same thing.
Too easy.

Tycor, Amethyst and Aura were taken to the dragonhold, which was near the top of the cliff. Esme, Gerry and Beth were asked where they wanted to sleep, and when they said that they wanted to be with their dragons, straw beds were set up for them.
"Here are some clothes for you," the guide said, and passed them each a leather dress which was embroidered with dragons on it. The dress was the colour of their dragon.
"How did you know what colour to make the dress, if you haven't seen our dragons before?" Esme asked. She hid behind Tycor, and put her dress on.
"We have been watching you all for a while," the guide said, and closed his eyes as the other two got changed.
They have been watching us? Esme thought to Tycor.
I don't think we should completely trust them. Tycor replied, and growled at the guide. He ignored it, and gave them all a plate of food. There was a massive hunk of meat for each of the dragons. Tycor started his straight away.
"What do you want us to do?" Beth asked after she had got changed.
"I want you to rest for tonight, and tomorrow we will test you all."

The Riders and their dragons had finished their dinner, and were sitting in a circle talking.
"I agree that we should not get too attached to the Varden. We need to find Kassian, and that is my first priority. I want to get out of here as fast as I can and go and save him," Esme said. Her heart twinged as she thought of Kassian. She missed the days they had spent walking alone together, and talking about random things. And the days when they had sat by the lake and thrown bread to the geese.
"Yes, you're right." Beth said.
Don't you think its odd that they have been watching us? I wonder how long they have been doing it... Amethyst projected her thoughts into everyone's heads.
I know. I don't like it. Aura thought.
I think we should stay here for as short a time as we can. Not more than a week, if we can help it. Tycor said.
"Well, I'm going to bed. I'm tired," Gerry said, and lay down beside Aura. The others followed suit, and everyone was asleep within ten minutes. Only the dragons kept one eye open to watch for danger.
------
Esme woke up first in the morning, and woke Tycor. She scribbled off a note for the others, telling them not to worry, but she and Tycor had gone exploring. Esme crawled up Tycor's back, he had gotten even bigger than before, and sat in the saddle. She was wearing the new dress the Varden had given them all, and had her sword belt, quiver and bowcase on.
Where are we going? Esme asked Tycor.

Wait and see. Tycor replied, and jumped off the ledge into thin air. He beat his wings a few times, and slowly rose up past the dragonhold. He had to go slowly, because if they crashed into the walls of the cavern going fast, then it would most certainly kill them. Another reason why Tycor flew upwards slowly was that they wanted to look at everything, and Esme could take in everything better if it went past slowly.
Esme looked upwards, and could see the ceiling of the cave miles above them. Tycor put on a burst of speed, and flew straight upwards. If Esme had reached out her arm, she would have been able to touch the wall of the cave.
There is no way to get out at the top! We are trapped unless we go back the way we came, and out through the cliff base! Esme said.
You're right! So thats why they were happy when they got us inside! We can't get out unless they guide us out, because we can't remember the way to the door.
Tycor flew upwards until he had to hover, because the ceiling was straight above them.
What can we do?
Wait...I think I saw something on the way up. Tycor flew down again.
There was a ledge just below where the ceiling was. It was made out of rock, and was sunk into the cliff wall. You wouldnt be able to see it if you looked up, only if you flew right past it. Tycor landed on the ledge, and Esme got off. The ledge was open to the sky! It was a way out!
Can you see the hole? You would be able to fit through there wouldn't you? If we have to, we can get out this way! I bet the Varden don't know about this.

After Tycor had told them all of this discovery (they did not want to risk eavesdroppers) their guide came to lead them to training. They were once again led through many tunnels and passageways, until they lost track of the way, and were just about to complain about the size of the most recent passageway, it was only just wide and high enough for the dragons to fit through without their riders, when they emerged into huge training grounds. There were many men training, fighting each other, and they all looked extremely good. The all impulsivly reached for their swords, it was rare for them to see a group of people this large they did not need to defend them selves against. Only two people on the entire field were not fighting. They were two children, much too young to be here, or so Beth thought until she saw their ears. They were elves, and so greatly respected at the Varden. They looked about twelve, a girl and a boy. The girl had long hair which was an extremely dark brown, and the bot had short hair which was the colour of honey. They seemed perfectly calm given the fighting around them, and stood at the edge, watching. The three were slightly surprised to follow the guide towards them, and realised that these two must be their teachers. That was going to be slightly wierd. Beth couldnt help but notice that they both looked extremely sad. 'It is not by their own choice that they stay'Amethyst's voice came to her head. She didn't even flinch. She was used to this now. 'You mean they have been forced to stay here?'she asked She gained no reply, as the girl stepped forward and addressed them. 'Welcome Riders, we are Twila and Jedan.' several polite nods passed, and their lesson in magic began. They were taught basic words such as brisingr, the word for fire and taught how to use them in battle. All three were better at magic than any other skill, it came naturally from their dragons, and seemed to flow through their veins. They were also extremely evenly matched, as none of the three could beat one another. Beth sent and arrow flying through the air only to have Esme move it away and Gerry disintigrate it with flames. They were thankful each night that they would not have to fight each other ever, and made amazing progress over a short amount of time. Breaking out Kassian should be easy, and they decided maybe soon they should try to soon. They just hoped the Varden wouldn't become a problem.

Twila sat down on the edge of the field and Jedan sat beside her. She reached for his hand, and he took it and squeezed it lightly.
Those Riders are very good with magic. Twila said.
I know. They remind me of the stories about Eragon, and his mighty dragon Saphira. He had a lot of proficency with magic at the height of his power too. That was how he was able to defeat Galbatorix. Do you remember the stories? Jedan replied. They were twins, and elven twins could speak to each other through their minds.
Yes. I remember being told, when I was young, that Eragon gained his power by speaking his name into the vault of souls, and that all the power of the Rider's entered his veins. If he had wanted to, he could have destroyed all of Alageasia, but he had a pure heart, and only used his powers for good. His powers faded, as he grew older, did they not? Twila asked Jedan.
They did, my sister. And before he died, he established Luivia. He joined Surda with Alageasia, and made one land.
I remember that part... But then what part of Alageasia is today's Taekla?
Taekla is the land above Du Weldenvarden, which Eragon had not heard of, or explored. It was discovered by the green rider and her dragon, when they were getting old, after Eragon had died.
Yes, I remember now.

Esme flicked her wrist and the rock that Gerry had directed at her head with magic changed direction and flew towards Beth. Beth was not looking at them, she was looking at the elves sitting together on the edge of the field, and she only just managed to duck as the rock flew towards her. It whistled over her head, flew a few metres away from her, and started to come back. Beth stood up again, not realising the rock was coming back.
Rider! The rock is coming back towards your head! Tycor warned her, and Beth blew it into pieces with a word. She had made the tiny pockets of air inside the stone expand, and the force of the air pushing against the rock had exploded it up into dust.
"Can you please tell me when you are going to attack me?" Beth said.
"Sorry Beth." Gerry chimed in.
"Well, we were all supposed to be practicing attacking. If we tell you when we are going to attack, it kind of defeats the point, doesnt it?" Esme laughed.
Gerry sniggered, and then Beth started to laugh too.
"Sorry. I was just a bit uptight." Beth said.
"Tell me about it," Esme whispered to Gerry, and Beth heard. She shoved Esme backwards into Gerry, and Gerry fell over onto the rocky ground. Esme managed to stay standing, and with a simple word in the ancient language, she retaliated.

Esme shouted out a spell, one of the last ones the two teachers had tought them that day. The word that Esme used meant rock. As soon as Esme had said the spell, all of the rocks that people were sitting on in the training field were swept out from underneath them. The people who had been sitting down before fell to the ground, sprawling in the dust. Some of the rocks that were loose on the cliff edge dislodged themselves, and joined the mass of rock that was flying towards Beth.
Esme had not meant for this to happen. She had meant for one middle-sized rock to fly towards Beth, but she had obviously put too much energy into the spell. As soon as the first rock began to move, Esme could feel her energy draining fast, and Tycor added his energy to hers to stop her from collapsing. This much energy was still not enough, and Esme was about to black out when Amethyst, Aura, Beth and Gerry added their energy to the spell. They had been able to transfer their energy through the silver markings that the three dragons shared.
We...ugh...have to...s-stop the...rocks! Esme said, panting from the exertion that using the spell was making. They all focused their energy on halting the thousands of kilograms of rock that was flying towards Beth. The rocks slammed into the ground a few metres away from Beth, and the last thing Gerry, Esme and Beth saw was their teachers rushing towards them before all three blacked out.

Beths eyes flickered open to let in a considerable amount of light. She squeezed them shut again and turned over, only to poked, prodded, and, in Amethysts case headbutted awake again. She then remembered everything, and sat up quickly.
Headrush
'Owwww! My head hurts!' her head did in fact feel as though had been crushed by the rocks which had fallen. Several times. She heard groans from beside her. Gerry and Esme were obviously feeling them same. The teachers looked angry.
'What did you think you were doing?'it was Jedan
'Sorry.' complained Esme. 'It was just a mistake.'
'A mistake like that would have cost you your life if you had been fighting. You could have been run through with a sword.' Twila was angry now. 'Your powers do seem to have become incredibly strong now though, you will have no problem if you ever need to escape.' she looked sad.
'Why would you think we would want to escape?' Beth asked, panicking that they may have read their thoughts.
'Sorry Beth.' Esme looked considerably worse than Beth and Gerry, which wasnt surprising since they had all helped to stop a rockfall which she had created. All those rocks. It was still shocking how powerful that had been.
'Thats OK...' she was cut off.
She had noticed the rock. They were no longer rocks they were pebbles and dust.
'Wow...' was all Beth could say.
'I guess we're more powerful than we thought.'

They were all shoked in amazement and turned to each other
"we were that powerful i didnt realize, cool." Gerry said with amazement
"yeah it's really cool isnt it, i cant wait to do more magic, i cant wait to learn all the spells." Beth said with excitement. The teacher froze all of a sudden, and woouldnt move. What was it? Was it them or someone else.
They stood up, by this time they had woken up alot, they tapped her gently and she didnt move.
"Who did that come out wherever you are." Esme said with caution
"Im warning you come out now." Beth said with impatience. No one was there they then realized that it could have been thwm that caused the freezing of their techer. The teacher said that their powers were very strong and they hadnt learnt to use them properly, what were they going to do? They had to do something to cure her they just had to find the right spell.

'There will be no need for that. The word is Arenta' Jedan spoke.
Esme and Beth muttered the word, and Twila unfroze.
'Why didnt you help?' they asked Gerry
'Sorry...' mumbled Gerry feebly 'i think that was me...'
'Well then you need to learn to control your powers enough to not do stupid things!'it was Twila now.
Esme and Beth walked off, Gerry trailing beind them

The Riders and their dragons were sitting in a marble cave, while the leader of the Varden talked to them. It was the morning after they had woken up after the spell, and they had already had breakfast.
"We are going to want you to swear an oath to us," the Varden leader urged, "So you do not escape."
"An oath? Do you not trust our word?" Esme said.
"No, we dont. We cant afford to be betrayed. I want you to go and get your swords from the dragonhold, and come back here to swear your oath. We will be waiting."
Esme, Gerry, Beth and the dragons wound their way back through the small tunnels and caves, back to the dragonhold.
I dont think we should swear our oaths. We cant afford to be tied so much to the Varden, we need to find Kassian. We might be too late! Esme said to everyone through their minds.
We can use our time to escape. My Rider and I found an escape route near the ceiling of the dragonhold. Tycor said. They all got their swords and packed up, not leaving anything. They were about to take off on their dragons when Twila and Jedan burst into the dragonhold.

"What are you doing!?" Jedan said. Twila smiled a little bit, the edge of her mouth twitching. Then she just went back to being sad. They were both carrying swords.
"We are leaving. They are trying to make us swear an oath in the ancient language, then we could never leave. We are taking our chance to escape now!"
"How are you planning to escape? There is no way out!" Twila said.
"We have found one," Esme said. "So... are you going to try and stop us? Because if you aren't, then we better get going. Tycor says that hundreds of soldiers are coming up right now to attack."
Twila and Jedan looked down the stairs, and jumped when they saw soldiers running up to them. A volley of arrows flew towards Jedan and Twila, who ducked. They went whistling over the elves head's to fly towards the dragons, but the Riders altered the arrows course to hit the wall easily.
Within a few seconds, Twila and Jedan were surrounded and fighting as hard as they could. They didn't know why they were fighting the organisation they were part of, but they saw it as a chance to get back at the Varden. They had been stolen as children because they had shown a proficiency in magic, and forced to join the Varden.
"Are you coming?" Beth shouted to the elves.
They didn't reply because they were fighting so hard to stay alive. Tycor jumped into the air and flew over to Twila, who was in the most danger at the moment, and plucked her from the fight with his talons. She screamed, but then realised that she was being saved, and lay still against Tycor's belly as her flew upwards quickly. Aura saved Jedan, and they all followed Tycor upwards, the soldiers shouting curses beneath them.

They landed when they were sure they were far enough away from the Varden that thwy would not be caught up to quickly. Jedan was now on Tycor with Esme, and Twila was on Aura with Gerry. They landed in a clearing, near a fast flowing stream, and the three dragons sat having a long drink after their journey.
'Thank You.' Twila said, looking up from the ground she had been studying. 'We had been the Vardens prisoners for 12 years. You freed us, and we will never be able to thank you enough.'
'Thats OK.' they replied.
'We could use some help anyway.' said Beth. 'It isnt going to be easy breaking Kassian out, and we still know very little of the ancient language.'
'We can teach you on your journey.' Jedan replied. 'We can return to Du Weldenvarden when you return to your home.'
And so it was agreed that the two young magicians would join the three riders on their journey to the castle of Kig Lucifer. They camped for the night in the clearing, taking turns on watch, and in the morning they once again set off, enjoying the feeling of flying once again.

They landed again as it was night time.
In the morning they had all been woken up by a loud dragon noise coming from Tycor wake up everyone.
"So are you sure you still want to take us?" Jedon asked politely
"Yes of course, why are in a hurry for something." Gerry replied
"Of course not its... ell its just that we dont want to be in the way of you journey. We know a safe place somewhere near where Kassain has been captured. We could show you the way to the castle." Twila said with caution
"Ok well when we bring you ill buy you many supplies and i'll give you gold." Beth said with reluctancy.
"We really could use help inside that castle you know, you two ae both very good magicans and all of are powers together would be so powerfu." Gerry pleaded, she liked them alot as in that short time they had become friends with the 2.
"Ok but what will we wear and we havent anything to ride on." they both said together
"Dont worry you can rid on my dragon." Gerry said kindly
"Yes and i'll give you things i have enough money to, dont worry." Beth said enjoyment
"One of you can ride on my dragon so gerry's dragon doesnt feel too much stain notthat im saying she will." Esme said
"Well thats sorted should we g i can hear someone coming." Gerry said with caution
"Yes of course." they all replied
They all jumped into the air with their dagons and gerry lead as Jedon the boy knew where to go and was on her dragon.

Later that day, Twila and Jedan where asleep, as their magically help in the Varden had drained them, and they had insisted on being on watch for the majority of the night.
Beth flew Amethyst over to Aura so they were just grazing wings.
'Hey, Gerry!' Beth shouted to jerk Gerry out off her daydreaming. Lucky Jedan and Twila were heavy sleepers.
'What?' she replied, clearly irked by being interuptted.
Beth had two reasons, one of them was that she was sure she had heard the word, Kassian. Esme was in love with Kassian, and Beth was happy for them. She didnt want Gerry daydreaming about her brother.
'I don't want to spend any more of my money unless we need to because we need to get back and it not really even my money. And Esme hasnt got any left.So i was thinking maybe you should pay for the supplies and clothes for Jedan and Twila. Could you do that? Thanks!'
She hadn't let Gerry get a word in edgeways.
'Beth! Wait.' But it was too late, Beth had signalled to Esme to speed up and they were laready getting furter away. Gerry too sped up, but got a surprise when she felt something hit her in the side- another arrow!
Oh NO!she thought, and then she fell off the side of Aura.
She fell through tree branches and got several scrathes in her arms before she landed with a massive splash in the water, she rose to the surface, coughing and gasping for air, then went under again, feeling herslef lose strength. The myterious archer had another arrow strung onto the bow, it was pointed at her.
Aura swooped down and lifted her out of the water, Beth and Esme shooting the archer in the chest with arrows.
'Seriously Gerry, what is it that all archers seen to have against you?' Beth laughed as she spoke.
'Gerry was about to complain about the money thing when she passed out, on the back of Aura.'

As Gerry was quiet on Aura's back, Beth heard a queer noise. She just ignored it and went on with flying.
Later as it began to get dark they set the camp ready. Jedan gave Gerry some medcine to help her to get better. Gerry got better very quickly the necklace she wore made her better again.
As Beth was having a bathe in the lake nearby she heard a noise again. She just ignored it she dipped her head into the water and as soon as she lifted herself up a man stood infront of her with a knife and stabbed her in the stomach. Esme and Gerry heard a loud scream and ran to the noise, they saw blood covering the water, and Beths body lay on the floor near the lake side.
"Gerry heal her with your necklace." Esme said to Gerry urgently
"I'll try."
Gerry tried to heal her and it took hours until beth woke with a scar on her stomach.
Gerry was so pleased with herself, and now really wanted to pay for Twila and Jedans supplies but she didnt have any money.
Later she told Twila and Jedan that she couldnt afford to pay for their supplies as she was too poor to and they said they were fine with it as they both had money to last them.Gerry was so happy for them.
In the morning they packed up again and went of in their journey.

Esme scrubbed Tycor's scales with a damp cloth and thought to herself. Jedan was washing Tycor's claws and scales, and he was humming under his breath.
I miss Kassian so much... I hope he is alright! We are going to have to hurry! A feeling of sadness swept over Esme like a wave, and then it was replaced by urgency.
"Damn this!" Esme shouted, and put down the cloth. Jedan stared at her, and backed away slightly.
"What is it?" he said, picking up his sword and shield and waking Twila, who had been napping beside Amethyst. She jumped up and immediately grabbed her weapons, being quite so as not to wake Gerry and Beth.
"We have to go and save Kassian now!" Esme whispered to them, getting on the back of Tycor.
"Wait a minute! If we rush off now, then we don't have a plan and we'll be killed! You've got to be patient!" Twila said.
"I can't! Don't you understand? I love him! He could be dying right now, and we are just sleeping! I want him back now, and I'm going to get him!" Esme said, and Tycor bent his knees to jump into the air.
"If we really can't stop you..." Twila started.
"...Then good luck," Jedan finished. They only let Esme go because they knew Tycor would figure something out in the air a few minutes later, that would check everyone truly wanted to save Kassian with all their hearts. They had a plan, also.
"Thank you for teaching us all you have!" Esme said to them. Tycor lept into the air, snapping open his deep green massive wings, and shooting into the air. Esme held her sword in the air, and sent a message into Twila and Jedan's minds.
Aura and Amethyst will be able to tell if I am dead. They will be able to feel it through the dragon's connections. Watch the silver marks and you will see them dissappear if I die. Thank you again! And goodbye.

You know how foolish this is? Tycor said to Esme. He had been flying as fast as he could for ten minutes.
I know. But I can't wait any longer! Esme replied.
You know what this reminds me of? When the legendary Eragon and his dragon Saphira flew away from all their duties to save the Princess Arya. Tycor thought back.
He was a great man. He knew what it meant to be a Rider. Esme thought sadly. What she was doing did seem to pay resemblance to Eragon's mission. He was greatly outnumbered by his enemies too. And so shall we be.
But he won. He killed Galbatorix and destroyed the evil that ruled Alagaesia. But now it has come back! Taekla is dangerous for all, and Lucifer is very like Galbatorix. We shall win as Eragon did!
King Lucifer is more powerful than Galbatorix was. Esme thought.
But we have Aura and Amethyst! And Beth and Gerry!
Do you not remember? We left them behind!
But we can transfer power with them. We should not have left them. Tycor said.
We are strongest together. Esme said, meaning what she thought to her dragon.
It is good that we left them. They have the choice now! They can either catch us up, or stay out of danger. Twila and Jedan can go back into the forest and to their homes, or they can come on the back's of Aura and Amethyst. We need to be commited with this mission, and this way we can see if our party truly is.

Beth awoke and turned over, looking around the camp. Aura and Amethyst where asleep, but Tycor wasn't there...how strange... then the thought clicked in her brain and she sat up quickly, getting a headrush and whacking her head off a branch. Esme was gone as well, and Jedan and Twila where sat in logs near the fire. He shout had managed to awake Gerry, and she too quickly noticed Tycor and Esme where gone. 'Where did they go?' asked Beth. 'Do not be angry,' replied Twila. 'But Esme went to Lucifers castle.' 'Alone...?' asked Gerry. The two elves nodded. 'She has great power, elven and rider. And also love.' 'LOVE!' shouted Beth, 'LOVE! I love Kassian as well! He is my brother!' She sat down heavily on a log, brushing away Amethysts thoughts with her hand, as though they where an object in the air. 'Yes, you do love Kassian.' Jedan spoke now. 'But something holds you back, and Esme has a millenia of elven magic inside her. Gerry looked up suddenly. 'But we had Rider magic. We can tap into it!' 'How?' Beth seemed to be giving up. 'The vault of spirits. The graveyard of Riders. It is concealed in the mountain on which King Lucifers fortress lies! We can borrow magic from the last great riders!' 'Would that work?' asked Beth, looking over at Twila and Jedan. 'Yes, but it is a dangerous tunnel, leading deep into the mountain. Many people have been driven insane from the small space, the darkness, the spirits. And you must convince the Riders you are worthy.' 'I don't care.' replied Beth. 'I have very little left to loose. Will you come with me Gerry?' Gerry paused for a moment, seemingly arguing with herself over which option to take. Then she nodded. 'Twila, Jedan, can you get to Du Weldervaren and convince the elves to travel to the fortress? We may need help.' They looked at each other, and then nodded. 'It is not far.' Twila said, squinting towards the horizon. 'We can travel by horse.' Beth pulled the reins of her and Gerry's horses over. They would not need them anymore. They would travel by dragon. An hour later, after good byes had been said and the fire was extinguished, Gerry and Beth took off on Amethyst and Aura, and flew as fast as they could to the mountain on which Lucifer's fortress stood. Jedan and Twila watched until they diasappeared, then rode as fast as they possibly could towards Du Weldervarden.

It took them no less than two days to arrive at the fortress, and by this time Aura and Amethyst where ready to drop out of the sky, as they had slept very little and eaten only a few deer. The landed under the cover of trees, and walked around the mountain. There was no arch or archway anywhere. And Beth almost cried. It had just been a story. There was no vault of spirits. They would have to go in with the little magic they possessed. Then Amethysts voice came into her head. Little one, what about over there, that stream?' Beth followed where Amethyst gaze was directed and saw a stream running into the mountain through a small gap, she walked over and ran her hand over the wall, seaching for a space, crevice, crack anything. As her hand swept over however, it began to glow, and a symbol suddenly flashed across the rock surface. It was the gedwey ignasia mark! She held her palm over the mark, and an arch way slowly formed, widening until it was human height. The stream ran trhough it. Beth pulled Gerry over and they ducked through the arch, splashing through the water. It became darker and darker inside, and so they where forced to return to light torches to carry. Amethyst, we are going through here, stay close to the mountain, but do not allow yourselves to be seen. Be careful.' YOU be careful. There once again entered the tunnel, and glimpsed strange drawings on the walls, like cave paintings. Dragons, fires, blood and ancient battles. They did not stop, even when they glimpsed strange forms out of the sides of their eyes. White, silvery form passing through the tunnel. It seemed like days since they had seen sunlight, and the air was stale and cold. They both regretted leaving their cloaks behind. It took them an entire day to walk to the centre of the mountain. They had been walking on a ledge beside the stream, which helped lead their direction. It now emerged into a large lake, with an island in the centre. A bridge led out over the lake, strong and made of stone. There where tombs built into the walls, and candles burnt in hollows, kept alight by an unseen force. There was somber silence, and neither of the two girls dared to speak. They crossed the bridge silently as the source of the brightest light came from the small island. There was a huge, pool, also made of stone. It seemed to be glowing, and strange shapes floated through the water inside. Before she could stop her, Gerry and reached out and brushed the water with her fingertips.
