A

acid (n) Lysergic acid diethylamide - a drug popular among hippies
afro (n) African hair style - grown long, shaped rounded and natural
aquarian (adj) having new beginning; humanitarian; having to do with love, peace, understanding, unity; often overly idealistic but effective in affirmation of human interdependency & relatedness
B

bad scene (n) a bad situation. see scene.

bad trip (n) originally described a bad experience using drugs, characterized by frightening hallucinations. Can be used to describe any bad experience
bag (n) one's main interest or purpose in life
ball (n) have sex: "let's ball" balled: had sex
Be-In (n) gathering of young people to promote peace, love, harmony; sometimes discussing current events, political issues and cultural hinderances to a cohesive society
black light (n) a decorative light, dark blue in color to the human eye, which makes flourescent colors glow
black power (v) collective energy of Black (African) activists
blow (v) cocaine
blow your mind (v) to give an amazing, noteworthy, enlightening or illuminating experience
bogart (v) to hold onto instead of passing around
bong (n) smoking aparatus sort of like a chimney pipe
bread (n) money
bug (v) annoy
bum me out (v) give me bad, sad, angry, or other negative feelings
bummer (n) bad experience, disappointment, or traumatic drug experience
bust (v) to arrest someone, (n) an arrest
buzz (n) a euphoric sensation resulting from a mood altering substance or exciting experience
C

cat (n) a person. derived from beatnik language of the 1950's
catch a buzz (v) get high; smoke a joint
chick (n) a girl or woman
clap (n) venereal disease, usually gonorrhea
coming down (v) reaching the end of the effects of drugs or other mood altering situations - like: (1) "He's sleepy; he's finally coming down." (2)" Man, I'm still coming down from all that craziness at the airport."
commune (n) a community of people who share possessions, living accomodations, and work (or lack thereof). Usually dwelling in large houses, farms, or tents (or all of the above)
cop (v) to acquire, as in "I'm gonna cop a key" (see 'key')
consciencious objector (n) a person who stands up and challenges imposed values/beliefs/behaviors that conflict with his own -- this referred mostly to young people who opposed the Vietnam war & burned their draft cards or moved to Canada; also those who joined protest marches & gatherings and other public displays, demanding attention, - and ultimately change - of existing laws or policies, often risking physical harm or incarceration
crash (v) to sleep
crash pad (n) a place where one sleeps, rests, or does nothing

dig (v) like, enjoy, be interested in
dime (n) $10
downer (n) an unpleasant situation; bad 'trip'
drag (n) an unfavorable situation or state of affairs.
dragging me down (v) making me unhappy, upset, or in a bad mood
drop (v) swallow - as in "let's drop some acid"
drop out (v) detatch from the "establishment" or other confinements
dude (n) person, usually male

establishment, the (n) traditional business and government institutions, believed to stand in the way of human progress. see "system, the"

far out (adj) very interesting, good. Also an exclamation
flower power (n) strong, positive effect of positive energies due to the thoughts and behaviors of the hippies or "Flower Children"
freak (n) (1) hippie (2) unusual person (3) enthusiast as in: "a movie freak"
freak out (v) get excited, upset, paranoid, etc. .... verrry agitated or emotional
free love (n) love without expectations or commitment
Frisco (n) San Francisco - one of the hubs of the Hippie Movement
funk (n)(adv) (1) "in a funk" -- out of sorts; in a mood; not feeling well or "up to par" (2 )a style of music originating with James Brown who brought us rhythms as he says, "don't start on the ONE, but on the TWO" ... ask Bootsy Collins & George Clinton. God Bless you James, wherever you are.
funky (adj) unorthodox; odd; unusual; unfamiliar & weird also: a musical style with "an attitude" [Note: Jimi Hendrix was one of the forefathers of funk, but never given credit for it]
fuzz (n) police

get it on (v) (1) commence, begin, get started (2) successfully interact with or manipulate others
grief bird (n) the one who brings grief, misery, discomfort, etc. especially after a drug experience... The Fugs wrote a graphic song about this. "I said hello to the grief bird..."
groove (v) enjoy
groove (n) state of being - sensation - musical rhythm & experience (eg: "Don't mess up my groove" wink
groovy (adj) good, interesting, enjoyable

hallucinate (v) to be visually stimulated by drugs or other mood altering methods - usually a person visualized enhanced moving colors or patterns. Sometimes actual forms, objects or scenarios are perceived such as "I'm a bird" See the movie "Fear & Lothing in Las Vegas" - for good albeit exagerated examples of hallucinations
hang out (v) to be some place, sometimes with no specific agenda; sometimes waiting for a person or event to take place
hang-up (n) inhibition; inner conflict, usually due to morals, beliefs, or culture
happening (adj) exciting, new, good (n) an event
Hare Krishna's (n) During the 60's this referred to young people who embraced eastern religion, shaved their heads (except for a centrific swatch of hair) donned varying shades of orange & white robes, sang mantras danced & played tambourines .. some sold flowers at the airports .. it was a quest for spirituality in a happy, fun context, although they put people off because of their fanaticism and their begging & imposing behaviors as well as strong proselytizing (recruiting) methods
head (n) hippie
head shop (n) shop where hippie things are sold
heavy (adj) intense, thought-provoking, deep, philosophical or prophetic
hemp (n) stalk of marijuana plants - used as rope & canvas in late 50's-60's
high (adv,n) to be in a euphoric state (n) state of pleasantness ("Don't spoil my high" wink
hip (adj) knowledgable of, or consistent with, the latest trends and ideas
hip (adv) As in "To be hip" - see above
hit (n,v) a puff of a cigarette or a joint (v) to give someone a puff; to give something, as in "hit me"

hippie (n) One who embraces the behaviors & idealogies of the hip culture (see above); in the 60's this included colorful unorthodox clothing & speech, unusual dwelling places (often communes), long hair, outspoken songs, re-examination of values etc.

hooka (n) a certain kind of pipe - with a bulbous liquid-holding base and one or more tubes extruding for withdrawing smoke from tobacco (or other substance) in the cauldron - as in Lewis Carroll's "Through the Looking Glass" - the hooka-smoking caterpillar

Jesus Freak (n)(v) hippie follower & enthusiast of the life & teachings of Jesus Christ
jive (n)(v) bulls**t ... manipulative nonsense
karma (n) negative/positive reaction to energies put into the universe by our thoughts & behaviors. It is believed that good behaviors & thoughts cause good energy in return, and vice versa. Some think of "bad karma" as a punishment, but it's not. It's simple cause for negative reciprocal energy. It's all cosmic physics.

like (interj) interjection meaning "...it's like this...."
love beads (n) colorful beads worn to symbolize love
Love-In (n) gathering of young people to promote peace, love, harmony; sometimes discussing current events, political issues and cultural hinderances to a cohesive society. Usually held outdoors, bands and musicians perform songs of love, peace, happiness, and societal change

man (interj) used as an exclamation to draw attention to one's utterance. related phrase: "hey, man"

oh wow (interj) exclamation uttered in response to new, thought-provoking, or exciting information
out of sight (adj) wonderful! excellent, outstanding. Often used as an exclamation

panther (n) member of the Black Panther Party - African American (Black) activists
paranoid (adv) frightened, terrified; sometimes without reason
peace (n) absence of hostility
pot (n) marijuana, hemp, ganja
protester (n) a person who stands up and challenges imposed values/beliefs/behaviors that conflict with his own -- this referred mostly to young people who opposed the Vietnam war, often joining rallys, marches, demonstrations & other public events, often risking physical harm or incarceration.
psychedelic (adj) of or related to a mental state characterized by a profound sense of intensified sensory perception, sometimes accompanied by extreme perceptual distortion, hallucinations, or feelings of euphoria or despair.
psychedelisized (adv) to have had a life-changing psychedelic experience

rip off (v,n) to cheat or steal (n) an unfair deal or situation

tie dye (v) a method of coloring clothing where the article of clothing is tied in knots, then dying it to produce an abstract pattern

tune in (v) pay attention to what is going on around you
turn on (v) to become enlightened to new ways of thinking or experiencing reality

    I used to think my Great Uncle Jim wuz feeding hiz donkey some Ganga man; until like, I saw what he meant by Weed. I would hurt me brain juz trying to picture that donkey getting da munchies and be smokin'.
