There are few things in the world as powerful or as fragile as Hope.
Hope had built civilizations and torn them asunder. Hope can be the thread that keeps a person alive through all of life's trials, or it can die with simple soft spoken words. It keeps the heart going when the brain and body tell you it's not right, it's not true.
The Worst way to torture someone is to give them hope, and watch mercilessly as thier hopes are savagely dashed upon the rocks of despair. To watch as thier heart soars to the sun, only to be melted away and eventually fall into that cold hollow space within thier own soul. Writhing under your grip like the hare beneath a hawk's talon. Even that Hare can scream, but life leaves and the brightness in it's eyes will fade, even if the hawk lets go.
Hope is what brings two people together in marriage, to meld thier lives in a union of thier hearts. Then they hope for thier children's future, and when the child dies young all the hopes for them die also. A part of the parent's soul dies with it.
A soul can wander alone for many years without the fleeting tease that hope is and it is a dreary colorless life, and when hope enters everything becomes vibrant. Once that hope dies the soul then becomes bitter and listless for what it has lost, a part of itself.
