"MONTREAL - Former Canadiens defenseman Tom Johnson passed away on Wednesday at the age of 79.
Inducted to the Hall of Fame in 1970, Johnson patrolled the Canadiens’ blue line from 1947 through 1963, amassing 230 points in 897 games. Johnson, who won six Stanley Cups with the Canadiens, is one of only 12 players to have won a league-record five straight Cups with the Habs from 1956 though 1960. Johnson earned the Norris Trophy as the NHL’s top defenseman in 1959, ending a string of four consecutive Norris nods by teammate Doug Harvey.
Johnson wrapped up his 17-year NHL career with the Bruins from 1963 to 1965 and remained with the Bruins organization in various functions until 1998. Johnson was behind the Bruins bench as head coach when Boston last won the Stanley Cup in 1972.
He is survived by his wife Doris, son Tommy Jr., and daughter Julie. "
