All Hollow’s Eve
Michael sat perched on the fire-escape railing outside a small apartment window. Inside, a man was snoring loudly on the couch in front of the television. But he wasn’t what Michael was paying attention to; a special of National Geographic was playing for Halloween. The segment was titled, “Real-Life Vampires.” Intrigued, Michael had stopped to watch, interested to see what the world thought of his kind. So far, Michael had barely been able to restrain his laughter. Michael glanced up at the darkened sky again, wishing the clouds would move. The one night he could be free, the moon refused to show. His attention returned to the TV. screen, where they were interviewing a victim of a vampire attack. Shaking, she described the scene she’d woken up in after being kidnapped. She said she had been tied to a table and a man was standing over her, drawing her blood out with a syringe. This time, Michael couldn’t restrain himself, he burst out laughing. The man inside jolted awake just as Michael clamped his hand over his mouth and ducked down. Tonight was the last night he needed to be caught. The man’s confused eyes stared out the window for a few minutes, then returned to their half-closed position letting Michael know it was safe to move. He jumped from platform of the fire-escape to the next until one gave way. He cursed loudly again at the moon as he cut his hand the metal edge 3 stories up. Boosting himself off the railing just below his feet, he regained himself and jumped down, only to curse again as he landed in a deep puddle of water. Could this night get any worse? Michael doubted it. Halloween was the only night of the year his kind could be free, but they could do nothing without the moonlight. How stupid could he get!? He’d slept in on accident, missing moonrise, while all the others got their fill. Michael headed back through the alleyway, giving up on the moon and deciding to return to Hotel Dumort. Not long after he’d left the apartments houses sprung up on either side of the street. He scowled as little kids ran past him dressed in colorful costumes and gripping candy-filled bags. He scowled deeper, disappointed at what this once fear-filed night had become. Nowadays, dentists were the only ones who feared this night. Back when the world was young and still feared vampires, houses were decked with charms and wards, cloves of garlic and wooden crosses. Not that any of this did them any good. Sure garlic may give some vampires a bad rash, but come on, how could a measly wooden cross stop a blood-sucking demon with an insatiable appetite? Michael chuckled, thinking of how stupid they could be. “Humans…” he muttered. Right now, he had to get away from them. He could smell the warm blood pulsing just beneath their skin. His fangs ached with the urge to bite into their flesh and suck every last drop of blood from their bodies, but he restrained himself. He took a path away from the houses, deciding it was best to go back to the Hotel once the humans took their children back inside for the night; he didn’t need the temptation. Instead, he slumped down on an empty park bench, staring up at the sky. Clouds still blocked the moon, but stars were still visible. In fact, they were more visible this night than any other. Halloween always made the stars sparkle with a certain hint of mystery and dark delight.
“I didn’t think I’d meet anyone here this late, especially on Halloween,” a voice said behind him. He turned to see a young woman in a fluffy beige coat standing just behind him. Her curly blonde hair was tucked under a hat and matching scarf. He looked her up and down before responding, “I could say the same.” She laughed, reminding him of bells. “Fair enough, mind if I sit?” He conceded, annoyed by her presence but intrigued all the same. “I usually come here to think, what’s your excuse?” He paused for a moment, unsure of whether he should be mingling with this mortal. Too late . . . “Same for me. Halloween always makes this place more beautiful,” he replied. She looked at his with a questioning smile. “Halloween isn’t different from any other night of the year, granted it is a full moon.” He tilted his head to the sky and smiled. “No…this time of year is special. The stars are decorated ever so elegantly with the tears of the dearly departed. This night is unlike any others for the shadows of this world. The moon was beginning to show through the dark clouds as her smile faded and was quickly replaced by a look of more serious confusion, and maybe…ever fear. He smiled wickedly, revealing his enlarged canine teeth as the moon finally broke through the clouds. Her eyes went wide with fear as his went red as blood. Large, bone-like wings protruded from his back as she sat, frozen in fear, watching his hideous transformation. “Wrong place . . . wrong time.”
Her screams were lost in a chorus of children’s squeals of delight and the fake haunting voices of the plastic decorations. But he heard them. He reveled in her pitiful wails of agony as her warm blood ran down his throat. He was irked when he was no longer able to suck any more of the sweet liquid, but full nonetheless. He let her drop to the ground when he was finished, in a hurry to leave before the urge took him again. Her hair had lost its bouncy shine and her skin was pale as the snow. “Wrong place…wrong time,” he repeated in a whisper as he closed her eyes. He flexed his long wings for the first time in a long time and disappeared into the night. He flew with the chill autumn wind under his wings, to the stars decorated with the tears of the dearly departed
