Specifically, the idiot's opinion.
My mother has decided to "boycott" the show Zoey 101, because the star, Jamie Lynn Spears (sister to the very famous Britney Spears), is pregnant at 16. My distinct thoughts when hearing this were "What. The. Hell." This isn't because I'm a particular fan of the show. I'm not too fond of T.V. in general. In my opinion, Jamie Lynn actually isn't that great of an actress. My issue with this is the idiocy in which this "boycott" was conceived.
I admit, I have seen the show a few times. My sister is a fan, and it isn't a terrible show. This show, including the "new" episode my sister and I were watching when my mother declared this, does not advocate teen pregnancy. The entire fourth season was filmed before she got pregnant. There will not be a fifth, because of the pregnancy/birth/child-rearing.
Now, from my end, Nickelodeon has been pretty sensible in their handling of this situation. Jamie Lynn made a mistake, as teenagers commonly do. She isn't the first teenager to get pregnant, nor is she the last. At my high school, there are probably more pregnant teenagers than in show biz right now. The main shock is the close-mindedness of some people.
So, anyone in support of my mother's opinion, please enlighten me on your thought processes. I don't want to be accused of closed mindedness, and I don't believe I am. I will see things from your perspective. One question, though: Why is teen pregnancy suddenly an issue only when a 16-year-old (which is the consentual age in many countries, in most third-world countries it is as low as 10) star becomes pregnant? I know a girl due in February. My best friend has had 4 pregnancy scares, and due to her weak constitution, she wouldn't be able to take child-birth or a miscarraige, and abortion would mess with her current prescribed drugs, probably also resulting in death. Isn't that a bit more severe than one star making one mistake?
