EVERETT - The 10-year-old boy who was buried in a sandbox in imitation of a cartoon super-hero has accomplished, through his death, a deed of super-hero proportions - saving several lives through his organ donations.
Codey Porter, who would have turned 11 on April 17, "always wanted to be a super-hero," his father, Rick Porter, said after a memorial service for the boy Saturday that drew nearly 400 people.
"He envisioned himself saving others," said his father. "And now, in his death, through his organ donations, he has saved five people - and there will be more."
"So he is a super-hero."
Codey, a fifth-grader at Silver Firs Elementary School, also was remembered as an active, energetic boy at the memorial service.
The service was attended by family members, fellow students at his school, teachers, friends and even the firefighters and medics who tried to revive him after his accident.
Codey died Monday afternoon at Children's Hospital in Seattle. His family said the boy passed peacefully with his loved ones by his side.
He had been in critical condition at the hospital after the March 8 tragedy, which happened after he asked some playmates to bury him head-first in a backyard sandbox in the 13800 block of 59th Ave. SE in unincorporated Everett.
Relatives said the children came up with the idea from 'Naruto,' a cartoon about sand ninjas with super-hero powers they watch on television.
Codey was buried about from his head to his chest. At some point, he began thrashing around, but the children apparently thought he was playing.
Eventually they figured out that something was wrong. They pulled Cody out and called the adults inside the home, who administered CPR until medics car arrived.
Codey was first taken to an Everett hospital and later transferred to Children's Hospital.
Codey's father and mother, Amy Walker, decided to donate his organs after realizing that their son wasn't going to recover.
"We had lost our little boy. But our goal collectively was to try and make sure that another family didn't lose their little boy or little girl," Rick Porter said.
"We envisioned other parents waiting for a heart transplant, or a lung, or a liver or kidney," he said. "That's a decision we came to together."
A memorial fund has been set up for Codey on the Gold Creek Community Church's Web site. Contributors will be asked to create an account on the Web site for security reasons.

OK.The thing I can't get is why do they blame Naruto for what happend when they should have blamed the parents?Where were the parents at the time anyway?And after awhile his "friends" would have noticed that the thrashing around would have ment something!Rumor has it that the kids killed little Codey to obtain the Mangenkyo shaningan.(How ever the hell you spell it.)
They sacraficed his body for it sense he was their closest friend.Rumor also has it that Naruto might be cancled.WHY?!It's his parent's fault anyway!Not Masashi's fault!Yet another fan of Gaara has died.Poor kid.I salute to him.But the thing is...Gaara doesn't use the sand coffin on himself.He throws it and what-not.
I think this kid was a Gaaratard that died peacefully with his family at his side.But acouple of more things to say.I'm not finished!If you ever see the video about this ,they say Naruto,NaRUto.If you ask me they are as dumb as preps.No.Stupid,I should say.Very stupid.Anyways,the show is not titled, "NaRUto sand ninjas."
They even said it was disturbing.Pesha.We are not even close to the end of the whole series and they say this now?If kids wanna watch it let them!It's not just for teens but for kids too.And you even see the T.V. raiting at the beggining of the show maybe saying PG with the letters V,SC,and L.Meaning Violence,Sexual Contant,and Launguage.It might even have a disclaimor before the show starts saying:"Due to the contant of this show,viewer descreation is advised".As long as it's PG I say "GO FOR IT!!".I seen Loony Toons and I see a guy walking around a field looking for a rabbit with a gun.Soon the rabbit starts shooting at him with his own gun.I didn't try to find a gun and find a rabbit to kill when I was little.I knew it was fiction and it would never happen.So I guess that is all I have to say.Thank you for taking your time in reading this.
