My Promotion SPeech (The first edit of the orignal [i think]
Hello everyone out there, yes you, you and you wayy back there. Don't think I don't see you. Well as only about, lets see, I think 30, of you out there would know, my name is Desmond -omitted-. Yes yes, haha, funny last name whatever ok awesome lets continue. So here we are graduating year of 2008, BUT we are going to be the awesomenest graduating class of 2012 am I right? By the way thats the year we graduate from Highschool... if you didn't know.

"Come gather 'round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You'll be drenched to the bone.
If your time to you
Is worth savin'
Then you better start swimmin'
Or you'll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin'."

Bob Dylan anyone? I didn't want to drag on too long with that song, after all its not Karaokee night. But still, this excerpt from this song couldn't have been any better than to fit this moment we are in now.
For the times they are a changing, now lets think back, how true is this quote to you? Close your eyes and look back, think back, feel back. How much have you changed, how much have your friend's changed? Was it good or bad?
You're probably thinking, "Oh I was such a terrible person" or "Look at me now, barely holding on but I made it through" or my favorite "Does my hair really look that way from behind?".
Well either way, no matter how much we changed, we are all still together on this path that will soon split after highschool. But lets not look too far ahead, we still need to hold together.
Just from this first verse from the song I can already see life. From these lines "Better start swimming or you'll sink like a stone", I can already see me. Take action, do good, or you'll sink to the bottom, and once you're down there its really hard to get back up. As you can all see, we need to take hold of our lives and look at it. Is what you're doing right now going to contribute to you succeeding in life or is it going to bring you down?
The times they are a changin, and a huge change its going to be. We'll be off from our little world of middleschool and set free into the world that will prepare us and, like a little canon, launch us into society. I like to call that canon, Highschool.

"I still don't know what I was waiting for
And my time was running wild
A million dead-end streets
Every time I thought I'd got it made
It seemed the taste was not so sweet
So I turned myself to face me
But I've never caught a glimpse
Of how the others must see the faker
I'm much too fast to take that test"

David Bowie much? Its amazing how songs speak out LIFE. Now we can look at this song and already there's 'experience' in life. A million dead-end streets. I'm pretty sure we all failed, we've all turned into something then changed into something else. Then we turn to look back at ourselves, its time to change no? For the better? To find ourselves? Change, a wonderous thing but we'll never know if its going to be perfect.

"First I was afraid
I was petrified
Kept thinking I could never live
without you by my side
But I spent so many nights
thinking how you did me wrong
I grew strong
I learned how to carry on"

Haha, didn't see that one coming did you now. We can connect change with growth, after all, we grow with time and as time passes we become different. From when we were little kids to where we are now we change. Some say we are a reflection of our parents, I don't believe that. We are a reflection of our lives, our experiences, and where do all these come from? It comes from growth. We grow out of music, we grow out of friends, we grow out of habits and just basically everything.

There are so many songs about change but quoting all of them would take ages, how long has my speech run hmm? But we shouldn't look for change in just songs, we should look for changes in our lives. Like all of you out there, I've experienced change (who hasn't?).

I've seen all my friends change, preps, skaters, gansterz, emos, rockers, and what not. But I want you to look into your friends eyes and think about what you see. They aren't going to stay this way, they are going to change. Everyone here, we are going to be the future, we are going to shape society and that is going to come through change. In my friend's I see a lawyer, a doctor, a businessman, a technician, a politician, even a musician all these things because people change. On the outside they are the labels we slap on to eachother but in their hearts they are the people of the future. We are all people of the future.

Change also led to the loss of many good friends. Fights occur, friendships are lost, trust is broken. All because of change. But still, we can never look at change as good or bad, its only a tool in life that comes, a tool in life that comes as we grow. Think about your friends that you don't talk to anymore, its because they've changed. Or is it because you've changed? Either way, no matter how much difference there is between you, you still learn to care.

SO look back at life, look back at change, and look forward to what you'll change into. Think now to shape your life, think now for change. And come Freshman year we'll all be playing this song in our heads:

"I'm coming out
I want the world to know
I'm gonna let it show"

Thank you for your time. Best of luck to everyone in the future and may your lives stay epic.
