“I shall sever the bond between you two. Rip! Tear!” Miyu’s voice echoed throughout the forest.
“A shield that has no shape shall defend against everything.” Raphael quickly said.
I felt, I couldn’t see, I felt as though something was around me. Suddenly it crackled. I didn’t know what was going on. I nearly flattened myself against Raphael’s back scared out of my wits. I needed to stop watching so much anime. I had to be dreaming. Maybe I fell asleep on the bench.
I noticed Raphael gritting his teeth. He wasn’t used to this, was he? “Burn!” he yelled.
“Drown!” Miyu exclaimed thrusting her arm forward. The fire that was flying at them suddenly collided with water and hissed dying away.
I peeked from behind Raphael. I couldn’t see anything besides them, yet I knew there were things, forces clashing in the middle or around us. What was I supposed to do? I felt my eyes water and I sniffled.
“Order me.” Raphael said. “Defend! Rebound!” Something clashed against a shield and ended up attacking them. “Aymie, tell me what to do. Order me.” “I-I don’t know what to do!” I cried feeling water slide down my cheeks. “That’s not good! Miyu! Put them to sleep!” Tayuya exclaimed.
“Underneath my feet grains of sand become grains of sleep. Spread across the enemy putting them in Complete Restriction.” Miyu chanted.
“Sand turns into mud Raphael! Turn it into mud!” I screamed.
“Water come before me and surf across the field!”
Water swirled from our side and I saw little clumps of mud fall to the ground. It worked. That’s right; their water had also burned our fire. Right now it was just elements; it was just like a normal test at school. “But I can’t do it. I want to go home.”
“Aymie! Listen to me!” My ears perked and I looked up at Raphael. “You don’t have any friends’ right? Fireball! Burn! Listen, if you order me I promise to be your friend.”
He promised? No, he couldn’t be my friend, he was quiet, and I wanted someone I could talk to. And I didn’t even want to get to know someone older than me; I needed friends my own age.
“Wind!” Miyu exclaimed.
“Aymie!” Raphael yelled.
Suddenly I felt my oxygen supply get cut and I gasped grabbing at my neck. There was a chain on it. Was this a Restriction? It hurt. I had to, I didn’t like losing. “Raphael what do you do for fun?”
“What kind of question is that? Leaves become a barrier!”
“I’m your friend I demand to know! I order you to tell me!”
“I play video games!”
“Well than treat this like it’s a video game!”
He looked at me. Can I trust you? His eyes asked me.
“I’m your friend. Trust is something friends do.”
His face held that of doubt but he turned back around as the leaf barrier fell. He took a breath. “Stone Blast! Crush my enemy! Break her arms!”
Suddenly I heard a sickening crack and Miyu yelled. Tayuya herself let out a small scream. Miyu’s arms were bent in a way then shouldn’t be bent in, and Tayuya had Restrictions around her wrists. Then again so did Miyu which only caused her further pain.
I looked up at Raphael and he had a Restriction on his neck like my own. “Raphael.”
He looked at me.
“Finish this.”I stated my eyes locking with his.
I saw him smirk and he spun his head around. “Turn these retched souls to ashes. Explosion! Total Restriction!”
Tayuya was quickly covered in what seriously looked like ashes, and when they fell she was bandaged, blinded and ear-muffed, one chain Restriction still on her neck.
“Did … Did we win?” I asked adjusting my bag.
“We won.” He turned around and yanked at my ear. “You need to be more confident in your orders.” He picked up his school bag and walked off.
“Hey!” I ran up and in front of him walking backwards. “I’m your friend right?”
He yawned and rubbed his right eye with his thumb. That battle probably wore him out.
“The least you could do is respond.”
He stared at me covering a yawn with his hand.
“Am I that boring?!”
His ear left ear twitched in my direction before going back to its relaxed state.
“You’re such a jerk face!” I exclaimed hissing. “You’ll talk to me during that battle thing but you won’t talk to me now! I thought I was your friend! And you’re a pretty lousy friend so far!”
“You’re pretty loud and annoying.” His voice was back to its whisper state.
“You are such a jerk! I am not annoying!” I swung my bag and he deflected it with his own. “Darn it listen to me when I’m talking to you! Hey! At least look at me! What kind of friend are you!?”
That day, that battle had changed my life and I knew it. That day Raphael would be an even bigger part in my life than he or I knew. That day, that battle, my life changed dramatically. The only good thing out of it was that I had made my first friend since I moved to Japan five years ago. That truly made me happy.
