Itachi Uchiha (うちは イタチ, Uchiha Itachi?) is a former ninja of Konohagakure and the partner of Kisame Hoshigaki. Though having spent his early youth as the kindly child prodigy of the Uchiha clan, Itachi is treated as a villain for much of the series. He is initially portrayed as being solely responsible for the slaughter of his entire family, sparing only his brother, Sasuke Uchiha, with the explanation that he was testing his abilities.[6] Around the time of his death his villainous role is downplayed; not only is he revealed to have had help from his master, Madara Uchiha, in killing the clan,[7] but he performed the massacre under the orders of Konoha's leadership so as to prevent an Uchiha coup d'état. Though he is ordered to kill Sasuke as well, Itachi cannot bring himself to do so, instead forcing Konoha to keep Sasuke safe or risk Itachi going public with his mission. For his part, Itachi accepts his role as a villain, never telling anyone of who else was involved and even encouraging Sasuke to get strong enough to kill him and avenge their family.
Throughout the series Itachi tries to avoid combat, seeking nonviolent discussions instead. If he is forced to battle he usually remains stationary, only acting in self-defense. From his idle position he studies an opponent's movements with his Sharingan eyes, trapping them in illusions when opportune by merely pointing or looking at them.[8] He is noted to be extremely fast with hand movements, allowing him to attack before an opponent has the chance to respond.[9]. Itachi at times uses one of the three abilities of his Mangekyo Sharingan, though he tries to avoid doing so as it is taxing on his body and damages his eyesight.[7] The first, Tsukuyomi (月読, Tsukuyomi?), allows him to torture opponents for what seems like days in a matter of moments.[10] Amaterasu (天照, Amaterasu?), the second, generates black flames at his focal point that will continue to burn until the target is reduced to ash.[11] The final ability, Susanoo (須佐能乎, Susanoo?), creates a massive ethereal warrior that fights on Itachi's behalf and shields him from all attacks. Before he dies during his battle with Sasuke, Itachi gives his Mangekyo Sharingan and all of its abilities to him in an effort to keep Sasuke safe and to help him someday kill Madara Uchiha.
[Ih] Let me guess. You hate Sasuke because you think that Sasuke killed Itachi? Pffft. Wrong. Itachi killed himself. He wanted to see which of the two was strong enough to take on Madara. Even if it meant pushing himself to the point where usage of the Mangekyou would endanger his own health and wellbeing. Itachi knew from the start of the fight that only one man would come out alive. He loved his brother. He loved him a lot.
Yes and no about it being Sasuke's fault that Deidara killed himself. Though it was Deidara's innate inferiority and deference to the Uchiha and the Sharingan that did him in. His rival of sorts was Itachi. He always wanted to defeat and surpass Itachi, even going as far as training his left eye to block the power of the Sharingan. When push came to shove, he unveiled his trump card which was his strongest bomb yet: himself.
As for Itachi, that was Itachi's choice, but there was probably some other factor to add. Judging from Zetsu's observation, there was something wrong with Itachi throughout the fight. His reflexes were slower than normal and he seemed to be weaker than usual. This could be explained by the side-effects of overusing the Mangekyou. I'm sure that Zetsu knows very little about the negative aspects of the Mangekyou such as the coming blindness. There's also a chance that the Susano'o causes bodily harm as seen by the apparent internal injuries as indicated when Itachi coughed up blood.
But there's another explanation. What if Madara has the power to redirect attacks to another person? We have seen that Madara can manipulate space/time to teleport to far places faster than anyone in the series. He's faster than Zetsu as based by Zetsu's sardonic comment about the difference in their speed. He's faster that Minato since Minato requires actual seals attached to kunai in order to utilize his own teleporation technique.
What if Madara "teleported" Naruto's attack and every other attack that he received during his little playtime with Naruto and friends all towards Itachi? Not like Hidan's technique. Hidan syncs his body with his target to create a warped version of voodoo. Madara would play out like Portal or like Wise Yuri from 666 Satan.
First, we see Naruto trying to attack Madara. Of course, it goes through Madara and leaves Naruto speechless. In a later scene, Itachi clutches his chest and hacks up blood.
Both scenes are several chapters apart, but when we think about it chronologically, they could very well be played out at the same time.
What am I trying to say? I'm trying to say that there might be a possibility that Madara rigged the fight between Itachi and Sasuke from the start and made it so that Sasuke would be the victor. Why? Because I'm sure Sasuke would be far more easier to control.
R.I.P. Uchiha Itachi. crying heart sad cry And just when I've decided he was to be my next favorite character after Gaara..../sigh Poor Itachi.... crying
Rest in Peace Uchiha Itachi!
