Breathe...
Shut up! I was bored! lolz
Random:
Epiglosttis: the flap that covers the trachea during swallowing, so food does not enter the lungs
Bursa: A closed, fluid-filled sac that functions as a gliding surface to reduce friction between tissues of the body.
Ossify: harden
Monosomy: Missing one chomosome from a pair.
Related to my medical interests:
Mucoviscidosis: Cystic Fibrosis
Pseudomonas Pseudomallei: A bacteria that causes infectious illnesses called melioidosis.
Pnuemothorax: Free air in the chest outside the lung. Can occur spontaneously, follow a fractured rib, occur in the wake of chest surgery, or be induced in order to collapse the lung.
Related to me!:
Aortic Insufficiency: Sloshing of blood back down from the aorta into the left ventricle due to incompetence of the aortic valve. (Also known as aortic regurgitation) [yay i has this lolz]
Mitral Valve Prolapse: Drooping down or abnormal bulging of the Mitral valve's cusps during the contraction of the heart [yay i has this too]
Tachycardia: rapid heart rate
Ventricular Fibrillation: Abnormal heart rhythm in which rapid uncoordinated fluttering contractions of the lower chambers (ventricles) of the heart. Ventricular Fibrillation is life threatening.
Pulmonary Hypertension: High blood pressure in the Pulmonary Arteries. Pulmonary Hypertension can irrevocably damage the lungs. [w00t go me]
PFT: Pulmonary Function Test
Pulmonary Function Test: A test that is designed to measure how well the lungs are working. PFTs gauge how the lungs are expanding and contracting, and measures the efficiency of the exchange of oxygen & carbon dioxide between the blood and air within the lungs.
Intubate: To put a tube in. For example, as a life-saving measure, an emergency room physician might intubate a patient who is not breathing so that the lungs may be ventilated.
Ventilator: A machine that mechanically assists a patient in the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide.
Heart-Lung Machine: Machine that does the work of both the lungs & heart; Blood returning to the heart is diverted through a heart-lung machine before being returned to arterial circulation. (such machines may be used during open-heart surgery)
Oximetry: The process of determining the level of oxygen in the arterial blood, an important measure of whether the heart and lungs are working properly.
ICU: Intensive Care Unit
Pulmonary Fibrosis: you'll have to join the R.A.I.D guild and find out there lolz
Yes, I did actually type that all out.
