Before I show you one of my heart of hearts I need to tell you something.... I'm scared. And I WANT....no NEED you to comment. For good or bad, please.
Worthy Of My Love (a short "story" wink
"How DARE you give your heart to those who are too weak and…pathetic to properly defend/guard it?!"
She stared at the massive bird that had somehow made its way into the village she was protecting without her knowledge until it was much, much too late.
It was only half the size she was but that in itself was terrifying enough when all
The villagers were no more then a foot tall, maybe two, and you were the biggest thing/person their.
Its eyes were like silver saucers taking up much of its face/round head,
It has a slight downward curve to its –very sharp looking- grey beak that was now clicking with anger and annoyance,
Its feathers seemed to be all black but when she looked closer she saw it had a slight white/grayish speckling to it.
And let's not forget the four razor sharp talons upon each foot.
She held her hands up in a placating gesture,
"Lord Owl, what seems to be the problem?"
THAT just infuriated it.
It jumped into the air and beat its wings causing small dust spirals to form around her and the little villagers.
The villagers, terrified of the Owl's wrath, scattered every which way in a mad panic.
One ran past the owl and with a quick snatch he had the little she villager by the throat.
He landed on one foot, hopping to keep his balance, and held the little villager out towards her as if he was giving her back.
She brought one hand back down by her side but the other she held out,
"Threaten me all you will but do not threaten those I protect, give the little she villager back too me." She demanded.
He puller her back towards himself and crooned,
"They do not deserve you, the love and devotion you willing give will not be appreciated nor noticed,
The heartbreak that will tear you asunder will not be healed properly and you will bleed unto yourself until you wish for nothing more then for
Death's Eternal Embrace."
The poor little she villager was too scared to blink much less move,
So she didn't even try to fight when Owl got a firmer grip on her neck and with one quick jerk/motion,
Broke her neck.
She gasped and clutched her chest with both hands nearly falling to her knees as she felt in her heart of hearts the little flame that had once been the little she villager go out forever.
"Why?"
She asked trying to fight back the tears.
He smirked as he tossed the now limp body to one side and in the same motion reached behind himself and caught up another villager,
This one a young boy,
Who had been trying to flee unnoticed with his little sister.
Before she could say anything to stop it he killed the little boy villager and flung him away.
She fell to her knees with tears streaming down her face, clawing at the pain deep in her chest.
"WHY?!"
She screamed as he turned and picked up the sister of the boy he had just killed.
"Because," he said as he slowly turned towards her, captive in hand,
"They are not worthy." He spat.
"And I'm going to show you what happens to the unworthy."
He placed the little sister onto the ground and ever so slowly began to crush the life out of her little body.
"NO, STOP!!" She screamed.
She lunged forward, ready to rip his throat out and willing to throw away a small piece of herself in order to save the little sister.
She was almost upon him, she saw the terror in his eyes at what he had unleashed in her, but just before she reached him their was a flash of light and a strong force pushed her backwards.
She tucked into a ball and rolled a little ways then popped back up as soon as she stopped.
The first thing she saw was Owl gaping up at a man that now stood/towered before/over him.
So great, his shock was, that he dropped the little sister without realizing it.
She let out the breathe she hadn't realized she'd been holding as soon as the little sister was pulled to safety.
She turned to look at Owl who was stuttering and sounding very squirrlish…
"My…Lo...Lord Cer...Cernunnos! Wh…Why are you…"
He stopped talking as Cernunnos very slowly looked from him to her then back to him,
He started to shale when Cernunnose's gaze fell upon the two bodies beside him,
His eyes going from a clear playful green to the color of the sky just before a terrible storm hits.
"What have you done Lord Owl?" Cernunnos demanded.
Owl slowly placed his foot back onto the ground because up until now it had been hanging in midair grasping at nothing, and pulled himself to his full height,
Which came only too Lord Cernunnose's knees.
Owl pointed at her who stood behind the Spirit of the Forest,
"She wastes her heart/gift on those that are not nearly as deserving as the rest of us in this forest,
My Lord,
You must make her see reason,
There are many of us who are willing to protect what she gives and strong enough to keep her from harm."
Cernunnos turned to her and gestured for her to come forward,
"Come here girl child." He said softly.
She walked up beside him slowly, keeping her eyes on Cernunnos the whole time so she wouldn't have to look at the two bodies or there murderer.
"I'm not leaving them."
She declared loudly, afraid that Cernunnos might try and make her go with Owl and his group.
Cernunnos smiled kindly and placed a hand on her shoulder, "Nor do you have to, if that is your/what you wish."
She nodded with relief, "They need me."
"WE need you!" Owl shrieked, "They are not worthy! They…."
He shrank back into himself when Cernunnos spun around to face him.
"Who decides who is and is not worthy?" She asked sadly as she looked upon the two bodies.
"YOU decide, girl child." Cernunnos whispered.
She blinked and looked up at him but he too was looking at the lifeless bodies.
"Me? Why?"
He looked at her with such sadness in his eyes from the undeserving deaths her heart cried out.
"It has always been you."
"You who go through pain and punishment a good part of your life,
You who's gift was given by me."
Cernunnos smiled sadly,
"My counterpart and I trust your judgment girl child and if,
For whatever reason,
We felt you were using that gift unwisely you would have been stripped of it long ago."
"But you have proven yourself time and time again and many animals in this very forest live and thrive because of you."
"I didn't know." She said softly.
"If you had known would things be different?" Cernunnos asked.
She didn't even have to think about it,
"No." She answered firmly.
Cernunnos nodded then looked at Owl who had his head bowed down and his shoulders slumped forward.
"Lord Owl, we will discuss your punishment later, but for now you will take these two souls too my sister and wait for me."
Owl winced/grimaced and bowed with a, "Yes My Lord Cernunnos." Before turning and taking flight.
After watching Owl fly off Cernunnos squeezed her shoulder,
"Know that those two souls are at peace and the heart wounds will heal."
With tears in her eyes she nodded,
And with a gentle kiss to her forehead he turned and disappeared back into his forest,
And out of our story.
She roughly brushed the tears away and looked at the villagers that were brave enough to come out of hiding.
She smiled,
"I love them , so they ARE worthy."
