Melaine
i was looking through some files on my computer when i stumbled across this. it was written about a year ago. not very interesting, but it was something that had been in my head that i couldn't shake.

"No! Stop!" Melaine grabbed my arm. I stop and slowly turn around but stare at the floor.
"Jason look at me," she sobbed. "Look at me!" I look up at her tear-streaked face. The look of despair on her face stabbed me like a knife in my heart but I continued to force an expressionless look on my face. Gleaming tears rolled off her chin and she squeezed my arm tighter.

"Look at me and tell me," she sobbed quietly looking at me straight into my eyes, "and tell me that what you said was not true. Tell me that-," she took a shuddering breath, "you love me."

"I-," I started. I wanted to tell her right then and there that I truly did not mean a word I said to her and that I loved her. I wanted to tell her so badly that I loved her with all my heart and that I wanted to stay here with her forever and never leave her side. She was everything to me and my world was happy with her in it.

But I knew already that I had to do this. I had to do this on my own and she could not come with me on this journey. I had to do this alone. But the only way I knew she would not follow me was if I lied to her. If I told her that I didn't love her. I wouldn't be able to bear it if I saw her hurt again and I knew this was going to be a dangerous journey. So I told her the only thing I could think of to keep her safe.

I looked at in her eyes and saw all that she felt for me. I kept my face stolid and it took everything I had to tell her what I knew I had to say. "I don't love you."

Melaine's eyes grew wide and she let go of my arm. Tears came down like rain and ran down her face. She raised her hand to her mouth and took deep shuddering breaths. The sky seemed to feel her pain and turned grey. A northern wind blew and swept the folds of our cloaks around us. Melaine's hair swept upward as she looked down and began to sob. Clouds began gathering around and the air turned chilly.

I stood there watching her cry and felt myself dying inside. A voice inside of me told me, 'What the hell do you think you're doing?! Tell her you love her! Don't make her cry! Jason you idiot, tell her you love her!!!' But I picked up my bag and turned around with my back to her. "Goodbye Melaine."

I began to walk down the beaten road with my bag slung over my back and my sword on my belt at my side. A few seconds later I quickly turn around not being able to take the pain any more and ready to tell Melaine my love for her. But by that time I saw that she was already running back to the castle, her hair flying all around her in the wind. I could just feel my heart breaking and I stand there watching her run. I turned my head away and close my eyes tight, biting my lip. I continue to walk down the road toward my destination.

I hear a roll of thunder in the distance and the wind blows harder. Rain starts to pummel down and the road quickly becomes muddy. Soon I can't see two feet in front of me. I feel as if the sky is crying with me as I walk. A flash of lightning breaks though the rain and I stop. I drop my bag and collapse to my hands and knees looking down. The roll of thunder covers my sobs as I kneel there for a very long time with the rain pummeling my back.
