"Don't think you're useless. You were born for a reason, and if you disappear, someone's life will change dramatically."
After Ashley and Kylee helped Michelle up, Rafael asked, "Dude, how the hell did you do that? You sent that fish thing running!"
Michelle stared at her palms. "I... I don't know. All I thought was that I didn't want to die..."
Mrs. Schooss's eyes widened. "You activated your orb? Without the physical thing?"
"N-No... I never got any orb..." Michelle answered, looking at Ashley. "I figured you had it."
Ashley shook her head. "No, I thought you guys had yours..."
The vice president of OS faced Vladimir. "Explain this, van Duuke."
Vladimir sighed. "Well... let's just say there orb is hidden."
Her eyes narrowed. "What do you mean, hidden? According to the scrolls, the Orb of Judgement gives you the orb when a chosen person is found. It has to be this girl's doing-" Mrs. Schooss glanced at Ashley.
"Once again, they are hidden, Mrs. Schooss. And no, Ms. Ashley did not do a thing to their orbs," Vladimir said, his voice a bit more biting, "And I suggest you do not point fingers at your superior's daughter."
"Daughter?" Mrs. Schooss looked at Ashley again. "I didn't know President had a daughter, and I've known her for thirty years!"
Vladimir shrugged. "Well, she does. You know how secretive President could be, I didn't even know Ms. Ashley lived in an apartment until two week ago! Ms. Ashley," he wagged his finger at her, "come, introduce yourself."
Ashley scampered over into Vladimir's hands, and she said, "Nice to meet you, Mrs. Schooss. I'm Ashley Smith."
"Nice to meet you," Mrs. Schooss said with a silent sigh. "I apologize for my rudeness. It's just with your mother gone, the entire company is in my hands. Quite stressful, no?" She smiled with a laugh.
Ashley smiled as well. "Yes, it must be," Ashley looked at Michelle, "You said you're Michelle's mother, right? But how-"
"Oh, I got remarried. I kept my maiden name, dear. Michelle took her father's name."
Nodding, she said, "I see."
Patting her head, Mrs Schooss continued. "I don't why I couldn't see it. You have your mother's smile."
Ashley was taken aback, but Vladimir began to speak. "Mrs. Schooss, I just called the cover up crew. Apparently the OCA ordered that L4 in."
"They ordered it?!" with a groan, she added, "That darn Fortman is getting bolder everyday. We have to get Lady President back before he manages to tear down the OS with a L50!" She stared at her daughter, who was chattng with the Asian girl and the gangster boy.
And it was the first time she's seen Michelle so happy to be talking with another.
"Once again, Vladimir. Explain why these orbs in particular are, 'hidden,' and not with them."
"Well, Mrs. Schooss, children, you technically have your orbs."
"We do? Then why haven't we started trai-" Ashley elbowed Rafael in the gut. He fell over slightly in pain.
"Thank you Ms. Ashley. Anyway, you all have your orbs, but it's how you say... part of you. And it won't come out until you've found your reason for obtaining it."
All for except Mrs. Schooss and Emily nodded.
Vladimir explained. "Let me put it this way: The world of orbs has shrunk expedentially since the 1800s. Back then, everything was a lot purer than it is today, and children saw things a lot differently. As things became more equal, and the horizon was expanded, we lost the pure minds we had when the world was more corrupt. So now, the world is somewhat cleaner, but the minds are more flithy, and you don't know what makes you, you.
"But the orbs knows, and won't come to your aid unless you're in danger, or you find out what this feature is."
"In a nutshell, it basically means you need to get to know yourself before you know the orb," Emily chimed, "I had to do the same thing with this puppy." She held out a necklace with a small cage on it. A pearl-looking shape sat inside. The object glowed, and there were suddenly six girls instead of one.
"I had to figure out that you have to know yourself," Elli said, "before you can find others," Emi whispered, "and branch out." Em finished. "I won't forget that as long as I live."
The vice president nodded. "I see, so that's what you meant, van Duuke. Hidden, ha!"
Vladimir blushed a bit, embarrassed at his analogy. "Well, it's pretty close."
The sun was setting on the building when the older man said, "Well, we didn't get much in, but it might be best that you four get home. Come, I'll drive..."
"I'll take Michelle home," the mother added. Vladimir nodded, and the teens bid Michelle farewell.
Michelle watched the limo go off into the distance when Mrs. Schooss said, "Come, Michelle. Let's get you home." Michelle nodded, and the twosome walked off.
The Es stared at the girl, and the six said quietly, "Don't give up."
"...do you really want to do this?"
Michelle knew what her mother was speaking of. "Yes Mother."
"You can be killed you know."
"I won't."
"It's going to be very hard. Training can last for hours," she said, "and I'll expect your grades to stay up."
"I understand."
The woman looked at Michelle in the dark, the only light coming from the rear lights of the cars ahead of them. The movement caused little sparkles of light to dance in Michelle's black eyes, her face to glow.
Just like her father when he asked me to marry him.
"Mother? Will you let me?"
With a smile, and tear prickling her eyes, she whispered, "Yes, I do."
