"And yet, letting go can be the best cure for holding on."
Ashley's head snapped towards the area Rafael was taken from. A sound had caught her attention: a sullen thud. The sound of a body hitting the ground painfully. A whisper of voices, terrible hacking noises.
She transferred her line of vision to the ground. She really didn't want to think about it. Suddenly, she felt breathing down her neck, and her body stiffened considerably. She glanced over her shoulder to see a pair of blue eyes.
"V-Vladdi?"
Michelle and Kylee reacted immediately. Vladimir was here. They were safe. But Vladimir's serious face said otherwise. He gave each of them a once over, checking for something, ANYTHING, that gave away the presence of poison. Ashley was a little pale, but nothing too serious. Michelle and Kylee looked fine.
He sighed with relief, relaxing. The aura spell had worked; the kids felt like normal teens. But at another look, he asked, "Where is Mr. Sisneros?" The girls looked towards the blank purple, and Vladimir's eyes went from calm to panicked. "Stay here. Don't move."
Vladimir crawled out from under the table, but Ashley grabbed his arm in a desperate attempt to stop him. Her brown eyes were screaming, "Don't go!" But Vladimir only smiled, and gently took her hand off.
"No need to fret, Ms. Ashley. I'll be fine. I'm not an ogre for nothing."
Vladimir's transformation began, and all the girls could do was watch Vladimir's standing ankles go from thin and straight, to a hairy green, and deformed.
The feet then disappeared again into the purple mist from which he had come in.
"Mr. Sisneros!"
Rafael's eyes opened slowly, painfully. The calling of his last name beckoned him back from the warm bliss of unconsciousness, and to the sore reality. Rafael rose, looking around. He supported his pounding head with his right hand.
"Mr. Sisneros, where are you?"
Grunting in frustration, Rafael called out scratchily, "Over here..."
Suddenly, a huge green monster appeared in front of him. The slightly opened mouth was paired with huge cracked lips, and scraggly teeth. An uni brow marred the acne-drowned face. Rafael braced himself, wondering if this was another creature from the she-man.
"Oh, Mr. Sisneros! Are you all right?" With further inspection, Rafael noticed this particular creature's blue eyes: the same shade of Vladimir's.
Rafael, still a bit dizzy, replied, "I'm fine. Just dizzy." The boy felt his arm taken by the ogre, dry padded fingers tapping the skin. Rafael winced several times, unable to fight back. "Argh." The Vladimir-Ogre offered a hand, in which Rafael took gratefully.
"We must get you out of here, Mr. Sisneros!" the thing almost dragged the guy out of the library, and into clean air, where it said, "You've been poisoned, but it's not too bad. I'll just call Madam and the girls, so you stay right here." Rafael sat down on one of the bench planters.
Rafael just groaned in pain. His throat was itchy, and sore. He could feel it swelling up. His eyes were watering horribly, and by the look of his hands, he was really, really pale. He barely managed putting on his hood to block out the light from his sensitive eyes.
He didn't know who wielded the Orb of Poison, but whoever it was, their head was undoubtedly, his.
"Rafael!" Ashley threw herself at Rafael, hugging him tightly like she hadn't seen him in years. She came back a bit, looking at him worriedly.
"Are you all right? What happened? Were you attacked? Oh God, you were attacked! Do you need Advil? Oh, wait, it's in my bag-"
"Would you shut up? I'm fine, just leave me alone."
Taken a back, Ashley obeyed Rafael's harsh command. Kylee though, didn't like it.
"Hey, I know you're poisoned and all, but you don't need to tell her to shut up. She's just worried about your pathetic self-"
Michelle covered Kylee's mouth in a hurry, trying to avoid a full-out brawl. Ashley looked at the two of them with a smile, knowing they understood.
Rafael just sat there, his head in between his legs, and his arms dangling on his knees. Ashley took the spot next to him, and rubbed his back calmly, letting her maternal instincts take over.
A few minutes of silence, and a couple sickening coughs, later, Mrs. Schooss came running in, first heading towards Michelle.
"Michelle! Oh, child, are you all right?" The mother hugged her, and checked the skirt and blouse clad girl. "Are you poisoned? Please tell an old woman you're not!"
"Mother, I'm fine, but please-" she directed to the boy on the bench. And without a word, Mrs. Schooss left Michelle to Rafael.
It was then Vladimir made his entrance. "Madam, it's a minor poison. Barely a level 2 strength. He should be okay in a matter of hours."
"I see, thank you van Duuke," Mrs. Schooss gestured Rafael to stand. "Come, Rafael. I'll get you some antidote. Ms. Ashley, Michelle, you too."
At the sound of, "antidote," Rafael complied.
Kylee crossed her arms, and stood beside Vladimir, who had reformed into the Hawaiian shirt-wearing old man he usually was. She took a look, and said, "Michelle is going to be heart-broken."
Vladimir sighed with a slight regret. "I know. But it might be best if Ms. Michelle finds out on her own."
"What, that her first love is-" Kylee caught the look in Vladimir's eyes. She looked to the side, her annoyance upped a bit.
