Kheya stirred, her hand going straight to her head. “Ow…” She murmured to herself, sitting up very slowly. She had looked up, only to find her little brother, Konno, had dropped her throwing knives on top of her head.
“Oops,” Konno had started, “I didn’t mean to..” But before Konno could apologize, Kheya knew what she wanted to do with the little rat. Kheya quickly jumped out of bed and placed her hand on her side, where usually she would find her elegant sword.
What? Kheya had thought to herself. She didn’t remember taking off her sword pocket when slipping into bed last night, but then again, she didn’t remember leaving her door unlocked either. “Konno, you have five seconds to find my Elegant before I throw these knives at your throat!” Kheya exclaimed. Konno ran off, scurrying to keep his balance. He slammed the door before she could reach her knives. Dang child, Kheya though. She went to her side dresser and found her belt that held her phone, a few poisonous darts, and a tiny dagger. “This will never do.” She had meant to think, but came out as only a hush sound.
Without Kheya’s Elegant, there would be no chance she would be able to fight with her older brother, Rin. She put aside that thought and made her way to her bathroom. Kheya took her time, taking out the braid in her hair. The braid had reached all the way down to her mid thighs, with the silver streak, racing down the middle. As she began to reach for her brush, she heard a swift move of the hand, turned around, and had already taken her darts out. She expected it to be Konno, but only found the sight of her Mother.
“I see someone’s ready to attack at any moment now,” her Mother said, “I’ll have to tell Konno to leave you alone next time the clocks striking noon. I thought you had promised Anu you’d meet him out by Lake Turrin at two?” Kheya cussed under her breathe. Coming in at 4 A.M. did no good for Kheya. She had slept way past readying time and knew now she couldn’t stop by the Market to sell her daily catch of Grubb.
She threw her hair back in a braid, knowing there was no time for a bath. At seconds, she was already making great time, shifting her way around her mother and down her crooked stairs. She lost her balance on the last one, but Anu was there to catch her at the bottom. He moved a loose end of hair from her face and softly kissed her forehead.
“You know, when I say two, I thought I’d surprise you before, but I came to see you weren’t even awake yet.” Anu said, tracing Kheya’s scar down her cheek. “Late training?” He finished her off, with a swift move of his hand and she was already back on her feet.
If Kheya could have one thing Anu had, it would be the elegance he could do, moving, without anyone even flinching, because you couldn’t tell if he was stuck in time, or if he was about to attack. She then remembered about her Elegant, but before she could bring the words to mouth, Anu had already reached for it, where it had been all night, next to the shoebox.
“I feel like such a fool.” Kheya said, cursing, but only a silent hush. Anu put one finger to her chin and moved her face to meet his.
“You’re no fool, Kheya,” He began, with another light peck, “But you do forget things too easily.” He smiled.
“I guess that’s why I need you around.” She gave a faint smile back, finding her brother, Konno, watching them from the hall. “You live another day, Konno.” Kheya said with a flick of her sword. Of course Konno found this as a joke, and knew he should leave them alone.
Anu took Kheya’s hand, grabbed a last sip of his tea that her mother must have made for him, and then reached for the door. “Wait,” Kheya said, removing his grasp. She ran to her brother and gave him the tiny dagger. “Maybe you should go ask Rin to help you out with the sheep today.” With a wink of an eye, Konno sprung to his feet and ran out the door.
“What did you say to him?” Anu asked, but Kheya only replied with a slight giggle. “Well, whatever it was, I doubt it was anything bad. Look, now I don’t have to open the door!” He said, with enthusiasm in his voice. Anu pointed to the door that Konno had been too excited to shut. Again, Kheya giggled, but this time, she shrugs off the joke.
Kheya followed, as Anu lead to the Square. It was already quite busy, seeing as though she had slept through most of the day. Anu was one of the biggest in the town, so he made a good guide. No one dared to enter his path. It wasn’t like he was scary, but when a 6 foot 4 inch man walks buy holding a scythe in his back hand, you know he means business. He just brushes his shoulders off, seeing as though no one ever notices him.
Kheya asks Anu if she could make a quick stop to purchase some more fabric, forgetting that she promised her mother she would pick some up during her travel. Anu makes a quick circle and pulls her into the store. At first, they both look for Ayton, the store clerk, who’s always the friendliest of the town’s keepers; but strangely, they see no sight of him. Kheya steps outside of the store to see if they read the sign correctly, but she has. It says “Open” right across the front window.
Kheya took a quick glance at the head of the store and found a man in silver uniform. “Hi,” She began, “I was wondering if I could buy this fabric from Ayton.”
“I’m sorry Miss, but Ayton has not been paying his money lately. He does not own this store anymore, but if I can be of assistance..” Said the man. Kheya wondered if what he said was true, because Ayton was always one to make sure he had his store. Then, Kheya knocked something into her head. In seconds, she was seeing something awful.
She was over by the Square Jail. The crowd was all stirring, talking here and there. Kheya stood on a box she found right next to her feet. “Last night..” Kheya remembered. There was something going on in the morning, but early morning. She remembered seeing a man, one that could shadow Ayton, and if anything, was him. Another man stood silently right next to his motionless body. In the dim light, seeing anything inches in front of your face was near impossible. Kheya collapsed to her knees, finding herself bawling. A tear was soon followed by another.
Anu was quick to knock her back into reality. There, she was really standing, shaking with fear. “We need to get her out of her, excuse me.” Anu said to the man in uniform. He quickly picked Kheya up and threw her over his shoulder, dropping the fabric. “Sh,” Anu whispered, “You’ll draw attention.” Kheya drew her face as close to Anu’s shoulder, hiding the world from her eyes.
After walking yards past the shop, Anu had stopped on a bench, in front of an Apple tree. He reached high enough to snag one; took his nail and started attacking the Apple. All Kheya could see was the core remaining. Anu reached for Kheya’s face, but she was quick to look away.
