The Picture I chose that represents belonging is a screen-cap from the movie ‘’Little Miss Sunshine’’. It depicts a group of young girls in swimsuits on a lit up stage. The girl in the middle of the picture is shown as clearly not belonging in this world of little tarts.
The group that belongs on this stage is the girls to the left and right of the middle girl. All of these girls have the same plastic expression upon their faces, the make up stripping them of any innocence. Their swimsuits are dressy, colourful and revealing, nothing that a young girl their age should ever be wearing. The way they stand can be interpreted as a flirtatious pose, something the tickles the fancy of child loving adults. All lack natural pigmentation, the fake tan made certain of that.
The girl in the middle, lets call her ‘Girl M’, contrasts all of this. She is the very image of the everyday girl, the ‘plain Jane’, the normal kid, the girl that still dreams of unicorns and cotton candy instead of fantasising about the next plastic surgery episode. Her hair is un-styled, instead it is simply pulled back out of her face, her face void of heavily caked on make up!! Girl M’s swim suit is not revealing and flashy; it has two simple colours with not added buttons or frills.
This image can be interpreted as: ‘It’s not always bad to not be part of the group.’ Instead of becoming some monstrosity that looks decades older then should be, it’s better to just be a normal kid. Why skip all the steps of growing up just to get to the part of working the streets? There is plenty of time for that later on. When you’re a kid, be a kid.
