“It’s been so long… I don‘t even think he‘ll remember me anymore!”
“Look, Ms. H,” Rina looked me in the eye, “you said you loved this guy, right?”
“Well, yes, but-”
“And you said this guy loved you too, right?”
“Yes, or that’s what he said!”
“Well then, if he truly loved you like you love him, then he still loves you!”
“But he got married to another woman!” I looked away. “And now he has a family, and his wonderful son!”
Spirium went red as I sat down on the front porch’s steps.
“Ms. H,” the black-haired girl’s familiar violet eyes softened slightly. She sat down next to me. “You loved Hiria. And no matter how many times you tried to deny it, your feelings still bled through! Love may falter and die, but true love doesn’t fade, no matter how many years pass.
“Teach, your feelings for him are real. Look at you! A gorgeous, thirty-six year old, still single, and hasn’t gotten laid in forever-”
“Rina Jazzimer…”
She grinned sheepishly. “Hehe, sorry. But it’s true isn’t it? That you’ve loved this one guy, despite the fact he hasn’t even tried going to you to apologize?”
“…”
“You love him. And it’s not that fake, one-betrayal-and-it’s-over type of love, it’s the I’ll-love-you-even-when-you’re-happy-with-another type of love. Look, you’re even teaching his son, and you don’t even feel a bit of resent towards him! You treat him like you’d treat your own son! He even likes you like a mom-”
“Hey!”
“Sorry, Spirium.”
“God, you’re lucky you’re my girlfriend.”
“Yeah, yeah, whatever, baby. So, Ms. H, don’t you see? Not only do you love him, he really loves you too, right baby?”
Spirium’s eyes were elsewhere.
“Spirium!”
“He keeps a picture of you behind the family photograph on his nightstand. I’ve seen it.”
“See? He still cares about you, after all this time!”
I looked at my hands. “…but… he knew I was your teacher. Why hasn‘t he come to talk to me?”
“Probably because he was scared you’d reject him! I mean, no offense Spirium, but your dad screwed up big time when you were made. I‘m happy you‘re here, baby, but he did! I bet you he’s tried to apologize, but you’re so dense, you haven’t noticed! He‘s scared you‘ll hate him for trying to make it up to you after all these years!”
“…”
“Admit, Ms. H! you love him!”
“…yes.”
“What’s that, Teach?”
“Yes, okay? I’ve loved Hiria ever since we were in high school! I loved him before everyone found out he was a prince, I loved him when he began dating Spirium’s mother, I loved him when he proposed to Lyra, I loved him when I was told he was going to be a father, I loved him when he was forced to leave to become king, I loved him when he was gone for ten years, and I loved him when he came back with a fully grown son.
“I love Hiria.”
I didn’t notice until then I was crying. I felt a pair of arms hug me, and hugged my best friend’s daughter for dear life.
“Oh, God, I feel like a teenager again.”
“What’s going on out here?”
I slid my eyes shut. God, it’s been twenty years and I’d know that voice anywhere.
“Hey, Mr. Valor! Sorry to interrupt your peaceful household, but I have a lovely young lady who would like to speak to you.”
I stood up, and inhaled deeply. I turned.
His blue eyes widened considerably. “March…”
“Hello, Hiria.”
-
When they were in high school, March Homes and Hiria Valor were the ones everyone thought would end up together in the end. Their friends always knew it would happen some day, especially Valerie McKeller, March’s BFF. March was gentle mother of the group, and always giving more than she takes. Hiria was the wise father of their group, and always knew what was right and wrong.
They seemed so perfect together… that is, until everyone found out Hiria was the last of his royal lineage, and that if he didn’t marry into the rich side of his family, he and his younger brother would lose all financial support from them. Knowing it would destroy him if he had to let go of his baby brother, March let Hiria go. Hiria ended up fathering one son at the age of eighteen, and because of this, he was eligible to become king of this family’s land. He left the small town he came from and went to the city.
And though March tried desperately to release the boy’s memory, Hiria never stopped loving her. Both their feelings faded with time, and as Hiria buried himself with the kingdom, his son, and his wife’s health problems, he lost track of time. March eventually became a teacher, teaching high school-ers history and art.
Now, almost twenty years later after they parted ways, Hiria and his son, Spirium, come back to town for “vacation”, for Spirium to actually have a chance at normal high school life, and for some time away from the castle to mourn the loss of Lyra Valor (the queen). And Spirium’s homeroom teacher? Ms. Homes, of course. She immediately recognized the name - Valor.
There is also Rina Jazzimer: the funny, outspoken, and completely unorthodox child of Valerie’s. But with Valerie a thousand miles away in some archeology dig, Rina throws herself into March’s care. While being the same age as Spirium (also same classes) she definitely didn’t act it. Nevertheless, she loved Spirium. And the boy, very reluctantly, liked her too.
Rina, being March’s obnoxious, spunky, and also completely unorthodox best friend’s kid, decided to take thing into her own hands when she learns of March’s hidden feelings for the widower. She decided to take it just a bit farther than her mother had tried.
Will it work out?
