It's kinda amazing how Nihon/Nippon turned into Japan. You go to Japan, they say Nihon. Everywhere else uses the word Japan (or a version of it) it seems. Curiousity struck me and I had to find out: Why do we call Japan "Japan"? To sum it up, the word Japan is derived from the Mandarin word japang. The first record in English of Japan is in 1577 as Giapan.
