So I recently decided that my "get off my butt and move" activity would be DDR, however, it's been over half a year since I've actually played. This morning, I pulled out the poor beaten mat and dragged its crying self to the living room so as to exact more unholy vengeance on its already destroyed circuits. The pitiful thing worked well enough, but my feet seemed to have forgotten where each arrow was, as the longer I played, the more I realized that I wasn't quite spot-on. I tried adjusting the mat, turning it this way and that like it was the positioning's fault, but I just kept reaching too far or falling too short. Frustrated but resigned, I knew what I had to do. I tapped through the song selection to those most boring of songs, and put the difficulty on... That's right... Basic. Now I hadn't ventured too far away from basic even at the peak of my game; I had been conquering difficult at the time and couldn't even look at expert without wanting to cry or carve DDR onto the bottom of my foot in a fit of stress-induced insanity. But to go back to basic? Really? It hurt my soul to do it, but working my way back up through the songs did help my mental map of the pad come somewhat closer to reality. Matching the map to the terrain, anyone? Anyway, I slowly improved until I was back on the difficult songs, getting just one letter grade lower than I had before, and feeling triumphant. I was regaining my former skill! It didn't matter how sucky I was before, because I was going to be that sucky again and get better, even! I was full of hope for my future as a mediocre DDR player! Then my father walked in, laughed, and asked why I was doing so badly when I used to get all A's. I feel like sometimes your family is put on this planet to bring you back down to earth. Other times, I want to smash them in the face with a bowling ball. (I do love them, though.) Cheeks burning a bit, I walked back to the pad, subdued and humbled. Oh, well, At least I'm getting better.
