Wow....All I can say is wow.
For those of you who don't know and live under a rock Silent Hill is a movie that came out yesterday *friday* and is based on a series of video games by the same name.
So why am I so hyped up about it? Well I own the 4 games in the series and have played them all quite a few times a piece, split between my fiance and I. When we heard they were making a movie involving the games we were exstatic, and at the same time dismayed. As we all know there have been several games to movies that have came out in the past andaccording to the majority, they all stank to high heaven. Needless to say we were afraid that this particular movie would follow in the path of the others....another game to movie gone bad.
Once we started to do some research on it however we realized this movie had a damn good chance in being one of the best movies of the year. Why you may ask? Well several of the people directly involved in making the games were directly involved in making the movie, to be sure it had that same feel, look and sound. And they pulled it off beautifully. They did so well as to actually use an almost exact alley scene from the 1st game, camera angles and all. It was really a beautiful thing to behold, watching in essence the culmination of at least 3 of the 4 games be displayed in a single great work of art.
The ambiance was well done as was the lighting and monster creation. Everything was laid out in such a way that you almost felt you were there, cheering on Rose and jeering at the monsters. They even seemed to fill-in a few blanks from the 1st game about exactly what had happened to make things the way it was and supposedly still is.
The plot/storyline isn't directly from the games but it quite similar to the 1st one, with bits and pieces from the others added in. It all flowed together quite nicely and was very fun to watch. As with the games there wasn't much of a "BOO" factor, it stuck with the "mess with your mind and keep you guessing" type of thing which my fiance and I loved.
The horror/gore aspect is quite high, especially the last 15-20 mins of the film when things really start to get...well....we'll say messy The rest of the movie had parts of nastiness but overall was a leadup of things to come and they did the ending well, leaving you hanging with questions, wanting more.
The actors were chosen wisely and did a stupendous job. Even the youngest of the bunch, little Jodelle Ferland who plays Sharon/Alessa, was astounding. FOr being that young she showed on-set her childlike side as well as a very professional side when filming. My kudos to all the actors/actresses for their hard work and great attention to detail.
So there we have it folks. Even if you aren't familiar with the video games series *though it does help*, I HIGHLY recommend giving this movie a watch. You won't be disappointed, I can assure you. Here are 2 brief summarys to the film......
*from upcominghorrormovies.com* :
" Rose cannot accept the knowledge that her daughter Sharon is dying of a fatal disease. Over the protests of her husband, she flees with her child, intending to take the girl to a faith healer. On the way, she ends up driving through a portal in reality, which takes her to the eerie and deserted town of Silent Hill. Sharon disappears in Silent Hill, and Rose follows what she thinks is her daughter's silhouette all over town. It's soon clear the town is not like any place she's ever been. It's inhabited by a variety of creatures and a living darkness that descends and literally transforms everything it touches. The human inhabitantsthe ones who are leftare trapped and fighting a losing battle against the Darkness.
Joined by a cop named Cybil, who has been sent to bring her and Sharon back, Rose searches for her little girl while learning the history of Silent Hill and that Sharon is just a pawn in a larger game. To save her daughter, Rose makes a deal with a demon in the form of a little girl, and allows the forces of darkness to take the town and destroy those who tried to destroy the demon."
And from the official site *welcometosilenthill.com*:
"The eerie and deserted town of SILENT HILL draws a young mother desperate to find a cure for her only childs illness. Unable to accept the doctors diagnosis that her daughter should be permanently institutionalized for psychiatric care, Rose (Radha Mitchell) flees with her child, heading for the abandoned town in search of answers and ignoring the protests of her husband (Sean Bean).
Its soon clear this place is unlike anywhere shes ever been. Its smothered by fog, inhabited by a variety of strange beings and periodically overcome by a living Darkness that literally transforms everything it touches. As Rose searches for her little girl, she begins to learn the history of the strange town and realizes that her daughter is just a pawn in a larger game."
I recommend checking both sites out for pictures, info, trailers and so much more. It really is worth the cash to go see it and certainly your time.
Later all (^.^)
