The forest groaned, followed by a thunderous clap. His body flinched and switched onto high alert. So this was their latest plan to get around him, huh? Syvilt had to give them credit, it took guts to work at night under the cover of darkness. The man rose from his cot and silently slipped outside, snatching up his knapsack of supplies as he passed through the door. He was ending this here and now, tonight.

In a few years, no one would be able to see this if he failed. The light pollution from the latest cheap metropolis would drown it all out. The crystal-like trees would just be another tourist attraction, what few of them would be left. A hand caressed the wood as he passed through and it fueled the dream inside him.
There they were, just up ahead. His movements slowed and he circled the camp quietly, documenting the number of people and the pieces of equipment in his mind. He counted up at least three trees down in a pile over there. He'd be damned to let them reach five. Scampering up a tree, he got a good enough angle to throw from and he fumbled through his bag to pull out one of his makeshift smokebombs. He'd never been great at alchemy or mixing but it would be good enough. Lighting the fuse with a match, Syv let the bomb fly and it fell in the middle of the operation.
"That son of a b***h is back!" They couldn't see him but they knew he was there. None of the other villagers had dared tactics as extreme as these. He knew what they called him
