Rhymes with Witches
All right, my first official entry and review. <3 Today I will be reviewing Rhymes with Witches by Lauren Myracle, the author of the best stelling novel ttyl.

Well, I must admit, the book was a surprise. I'll admit that I'm a fan of mainly fantasy books, but I have a soft spot for the Gossip Girl books, and such like. When I saw the cover of this book, in a delicate argyle black and grey pattern, with a silver Tiffany's bracelet with a B engraved on it, I was intrigued. Could it be like my Gossip Girl novels? So I checked it out.

One thing- it's quite different from the Gossip Girl novels. The novel centers around a freshman at a prestigious high school- Jane. To everyone except her best friend Phil (love struck with her since they were very young), and her other friend Alicia (a snarky b***h who doesn't seem to offer much in terms of friendship) she is invisable. This all changes on day, when the high school's exclusive group- the Bitches (yes, with a capital B), decides that Jane is perfect to complete their four some. Ensue Mean Girls like start to Jane's luck, minus the new outfits. The Bitches want Jane exactly as she is.

From here on out, the novel seems to follow a typical high school novel stereotype- girl gets popular, girl forsakes her best friends, girl becomes b***h. But then things change- "For one to rise, one has to fall" is the motto of the Bitches. Oddly enough, Jane has to leave a stolen offering from a fellow student on the desk of her bizarre religion teacher- Lurl the Purl.

I think the book rather lost momentum there, as it slips from believability to a fine line between fantasy and out right derision. Lurl the Purl sacrifices cats and has a room full of Goddess idol figures. People become almost see through when something is stolen off of them. I would say more, but it would give away much of the plot.

So in conclusion- strong opening, somewhat weaker middle, weak ending.

2/5 stars.

That's all for today folks. smile
