Okay! THis is the fiction I wrote for the First Task in teh Gaian Tri-Wizard Tournament! Centered around Sirius Black and Lucius Malfoy.
He’d finally been allowed to do something. Allowed to help the Order in some way, allowed to get out and breathe fresh air. On special orders from Dumbledore, no less. If that wasn’t something he could gloat about after months of sitting around collecting dust in the old Black Family house, he didn’t know what was. However…when Dumbledore had sent him on his first ever mission (for this war at least) he hadn’t been expecting –this-.
No. He had been thinking that he would go on guard duty, perhaps with Remus if he could get lucky enough, or collect information for this or that. Stalking and Searching for Voldemort’s old hide-outs had been the furthest thing in his mind. But here he was, doing just that. Much to his own dismay, of course.
He didn’t see what was so important about watching old hideouts but Dumbledore hadn’t given him any chance to question his motives and besides, he was just glad to be out of the house and doing something productive.
Unfortunately…like every good thing that had happened to him…it began to take a downward spiral. And it was all thanks to one single person.
Lucius Malfoy.
Sirius had, only days ago stumbled on a rusty, run-down manor in the country-side. Unlike the others before it, seemed to still be in use – to his joy. He hadn’t seen anyone physically but sometimes, during the late hours of the night he would hear a distant ‘crack’ of apparition that would stir him from his sleep.
No matter how good his eyesight was (in his animagus form, of course) was in the dark, it couldn’t pierce through the blanket of black that shadowed the night.
Currently, he was curled up beneath the underbrush, asleep. It was past midnight, that he was sure of. So deep in sleep he was that he’d failed to hear the coming footsteps…
Long blonde hair had been tied out of his face by a black bow which was hidden beneath a skeletal mask and a black hood. Icy blue eyes pierced through the dark, glowing with malice. Those eyes belonged to only one.
Lucius Malfoy.
”Well, well, well…What do we have hear?” he spoke suddenly, stopping in the clearing just before the brush where he lay. Sirius had been startled awake at the voice, it had been weeks since he had heard another humans voice after all. However, he preferred silence over a Malfoy’s drawl any day.
He didn’t dare to move, heart pounding in his chest. He knew Malfoy hadn’t spotted him, perhaps he knew that he was close, but not where exactly. That was a relief…he still had a chance, as long as he didn’t move that is.
”There’s no point in hiding from me now…I know you’re here…” Lucius spoke up again once more, this time growing annoyed. Perhaps if he allowed him to get frustrated it would stall him some time to figure out a way to get out of this mess. Dumbledore wouldn’t be very happy if he ended up getting in a duel with Malfoy. Any anywhere…he didn’t even have a proper wand – it wouldn’t do well to jump into that.
”…Dumbledore sent you out here, didn’t he? Heh…took him longer then I had expected. Would’ve thought you’d of been here sooner…you’ve been here for weeks though, haven’t you…?” here he let out a sharp laugh and Sirius could see him shake his head in mock amusement. What he would give right then and there to be able to storm up to him and wipe that pretty-boy smirk off of his face.
”You and your Order think you have the upper hand. You’d be surprised. The Potters were the same way,” Lucius laughed again, “You all think you’re noble but when you least expect it , it writhers back around and strikes…James and Lily, however unfortunate it may be, thought they were safe…I must say no one is safe anymore, don’t you agree?”
That was enough.
Sirius knew he was going to get his arse beaten by Lupin and Dumbledore, and probably everyone else – if he lived – but there was no way he was going to sit and listen to Malfoy speak in such away. About James no less!
He closed his eyes and let his body shift back to his normal form, the bushes rattling around him as he stood up at full-length. Lucius grinned triumphantly. He had brought the man out of his hole, perfect. That was something he took pride in, the way to get under others – especially his enemy’s – skin and use what means the most to them against them. Verbal lashing was his highest attribute after all. Anyone he knew personally would be able to tell you that.
Sirius just managed to get out of the bushes without much of a scrabble, although he now had a few bleeding cuts adjourning his body.
”Ahh...I knew you’d come around to see it my way,” Lucius spoke evenly, his cold eyes meeting Sirius’ in a intense glare that held much secrecy behind them. Unspoken words flashed between them both. “Or perhaps…you had to feel like you had the upper hand. That you were the one in control? Is that it? It it, isn’t it?”
Sirius said nothing as he glanced down to his left pocket, where Dumbledore’s wand lay hidden. He knew it wouldn’t work like a normal wand would be but the point was it would come in handy if Malfoy attacked and by a quick glimpse in the eyes of Malfoy told him that he would…sooner or later.
Sirius managed to turn his gaze back to Lucius, even though his body was trembling with both fear and anticipation. Lucius seemed to be reading his mind because in the next moment, the snake-headed wand had been revealed and he had it pointed to Sirius’ chest. “Stupefy!”
Sure, he had never been great with remembering spells and that sort but with a blink of an eye all those that he had thought he had forgotten pushed themselves to the front of his mind. Jumping back into the underbrush, without thinking of the new scrapes and bruises he was going to get, Sirius had managed to get out of the way in time. “Rictusempra!”
…So it was a child’s charm, what did he care? And by the sound of Lucius’ uncontrollable bark of laughter ringing in his ears it had worked. “Petrificus Totalus!” he shouted, waving Dumbledore’s wand in Lucius’ direction before pushing himself out of the brush. The blonde death eater was now flat on his back, eyes staring blankly at the dark sky.
He watched Lucius for a long moment, a burst of triumph dancing in his chest as he turned and ran through the woods in the opposite direction. There was no way he would be able to bring Lucius back to Dumbledore, he himself was to weak to do that by himself but if he could get to the apparition point maybe he did have a chance.
He hadn’t expected it to be a mile and a half away. Sirius was still running ten minutes later, when a crack from behind him had been heard. Sirius turned on his heels, eyes wide as saucers as Malfoy’s face danced into his view. He was so close that Sirius could barely decipher where which eye was or where his face began underneath the mess of blonde locks.
”How did you…?”
”Did you honestly believe that your magic would be able to hold me back? How long has it been since you last cast a spell, Black?”
Sirius didn’t answer him, swallowing the lump in the back of his throat.
”I could kill you. Right now. No one would know it was me…There are no witnesses…It would be weeks before anyone came crawling back to find your body…”
”You lie.” Sirius snarled, wanting to step away from the wand between his eyes. He had tried, but had found that the unmistakable feel of coarse bark scratch up against his back. He was pinned. Motionless.
“I don’t.” Lucius chuckled, reaching out with his free hand and brushing the messy locks out of Sirius’ eyes so he could look straight into them without a barrier. “I could easily kill you and destroy your body until its nothing,”
”Then do it,” he snarled, no longer afraid. If he was going to die, at least he would do it in style, protecting something rather then a stupid accident or old age or any of that nonsense. “Kill me.”
”There would be no fun in that.” Well, that had been surprising. Lucius was now caressing the back of his shoulders. For a moment it was almost like a friendly gesture of sorts, comforting even but then the back of his head had collided with the bark of the tree. So much for friendly.
”No…I’m going to give you another chance. Run back to Dumbledore...tell him what you know…it’s worthless after all.” Lucius whispered, pulling away, however his wand was still drawn. “If you attack…I’ll change my mind…just turn and leave.” His voice was hoarse now, and it seemed that the older Malfoy was fighting with himself.
Sirius could only stare. A part of him wanted to turn and run like he was told but the other told him it was a trap, that once he turned around the whispered words of ‘Avada Kedavra’ would take his life. Sirius licked his lips and shifted a step to the side and then back. Lucius’ wand was still pointing at him but he didn’t seem to move in the least. “…Why?”
”…Do you value your life, Black? Get out of here!” he hissed, narrowing his eyes threateningly. Sirius took another step back before he turned and ran in the opposite direction once again. His eyes closed tightly as he took those first few steps, just waiting to feel his life slip away. But nothing came. No whispered words and no flash of green light. Upon a glance back, he could still see Lucius’ standing there, blonde hair bellowing out behind him with the rustling wind. His wand was no longer drawn and he caught his eye in the distances and once he had, Lucius turned and walked off, his silhouette disappearing into the darkness.
”…Maybe he isn’t –so- bad…” a pause, and a light cackle, “Yeah…right.” He closed his eyes a few more yards away and he had reached the apparition point. Clenching his fists around the wand in his hand he apparated away, back to Hogwarts where he would, quite surprisingly, keep what had happened between he and Lucius a secret.
After all. Some things were better off that way. A secret
