OKay, the Native Americans were one of the many races who used to chew on sap from certain trees (spruce, or cocoa, or others) and they had some pretty nice teeth. Of course they also didn't really have the processed sugars that the Europeans had (and the Mayans liked black teeth so did the Chinese/Japanese at one time). But anyways, the thought is that I should give my main character pirate type person a nice smile because he has the habit of chewing peppersap! The tree in question does not exist but since this is set in my own world I say it does. It is a bitter taste with a burning after taste and rather something you had to be used to to enjoy. Main character got the habit when he sank his first ship (quote from character 'Hey, who moved those rocks in me ship's way!?') and ended up in a desert like area where the tree grows like a weed. He spent a few months among a nomad tribe until he got another boat (later sunk by a fleet of Imperial ships). They chewed it as a way to keep their mouths moist in the desert conditions, but it also has the added benefits of keeping their teeth white and helping with bad breath.
That be my idea. And now I am off to write about the psychopath.
