The Origin of Apophis
Apophis wasn’t always such a giant 48 foot long evil snake that guarded the afterlife, in fact when he was born; he was the tiniest serpent in all of Egypt. For little Apophis, getting around was a hard thing to do because he had a head made of flint so he couldn’t slither as fast as all the other snakes. He did how ever have a very unlikely friend at the time. His friend’s name was Ra, the sun god who when around little Apophis would take the form of a cat. This made traveling easier for Apophis because he could simply ride on Ra’s back instead of trying to lift his rocky head. Because of his size and features, Apophis was thought of as a disgrace to all the other snakes and serpents. However Ra, being the god of all that is good, did not stand for this and sought out to punish all who insulted his little buddy. Apophis was untouchable when he was around Ra which was great, however, every now and then Ra would have to leave to make sure all was good in Egypt and had to assure that the sun would rise every morning. This left little Apophis vulnerable. Ra felt bad for his best friend so he decided to let Apophis stay in his palace to protect him.
One day however changed the course of little Apophis’ life forever. One morning Ra was walking through Egypt when a snake bit his foot and became very ill. All of Egypt’s finest medicines were used to try and save Ra but none would work. They tried magic of all sorts but their efforts were futile. The reason why he could not be cured is that this snake was created by Seth as an act of evil towards the sun god. Seth noticed that Ra was spending so much time with Apophis and decided to make the snake look just like him. Apophis was unaware that this happened because during all of this he was asleep in the tiny bed that Ra had made for him.
When Apophis had woken up he found out that Ra had passed away but being a god he became the sun instead, but Apophis had no idea why Ra had died though. Ra had fallen for Seth’s trick and was furious at Apophis and told all of the other snakes in Egypt to band together and kill him for betraying Ra. As the snakes began to corner him in the back of an ally, the god of chaos, Seth, arrived in the form of a dog-like creature known as Sha. Seth told Apophis that he would save him and Apophis agreed to it. So using his evil powers, Seth made Apophis 48 feet long which made all the snakes cower in fear and run away at the site of this new looking Apophis. Ra became angry at all of those snakes and decided to use his powers to send all of those snakes to the 12 gates that led to the afterlife at which he also sent Apophis. This made Apophis mad and so now every time Ra has to get through the 12 gates Apophis tries to stop him. Now to this very day both Ra and Apophis mistakenly hate each other.
