"Aramis and Porthos are being prepared for burial. I refused to allow Richelieu to condemn them and so asked Descoteaux to conduct funeral rites. He is the garrison priest and knew them better than any other holy man in the world. Also learned today that Aramis was pregnant. Him and Madeleine. "This is my last report as captain of the garrison. I have given my resignation and recommended Lavigne as my replacement. I have lost too much too quickly. My four most promising men, my boys. Madeleine, who had become like a daughter to me. And to learn there were to have been two babies entering our lives if not for this senseless tragedy. It is too much. "This journal will be entrusted to the d'Athos family. Rene will, no doubt, keep it safe. I will continue to train him and keep watch over him until he is of age, but I have little belief that the scars will ever heal for either of us.
