Hitsugaya is a young boy with an ability to control ice and water. He is very mature and serious, but does have a softer side. He is looked upon as a child prodigy by many. His intuition is very sharp and normally always right.

Hitsugaya Toshiro was born on December 20th, eighteen years ago, in Junrinan, District 1 of Rukongai on the world of Terra. He had a normal happy childhood with his parents until he turned six when a terrible tragedy struck. Both his mother and father were killed by Hollows during an attack on the Rukongai. Hitsugaya was saved by what he thought was a guardian angel in the form of a glowing wisp-like serpent.

After his parent's deaths, his grandmother took him in and cared for him for two years. During that time he encountered a Shinigami/Soul Reaper named, Matsumoto, who told him that he was destined to become a Shinigami/Soul Reaper as well. Not knowing what to think of the large breasted woman, Hitsugaya attempted to undergo training of his own, attempting to gain more power, like she had.

Other than Matsumoto, Hitsugaya met a young girl around his age by the name of Hinamori Momo, who he made as a stead-fast friend, although he would never admit it. Being the only one allowed to call him "Shiro-chan" or "Whitey", he would always retort with "Bed-Wetter Momo." She kept his secret about his secret training himself, although she, too, was destined to become a Shinigami/Soul Reaper.

With him, he always carries his Zanpakutou. Normally, when sealed, it looks almost exactly like a normal Zanpakutou (a katana-esque weapon Shinigami/Soul Reapers carry that is a physical representation of their spiritual power) with the exception of the guard, which is in the shape of a four-pointed star. Its hilt is a pale blue, while the sheath itself is a deeper blue, which is a reflection of Hyourinmaru's abilities. It is usually worn on his back, which no other Shinigami/Soul Reaper does, save for Ichigo.

During training, Hitsugaya forced his powers to manifest at an early in order to protect those he held most dear, so that what happened to his parents would never happen again. When his Zanpakutou finally appeared in a dream after an argument with Matsumoto, he learned its name, Hyourinmaru's. After it's manifestation he finally understood that it was his own soul's power that had protected him, and that his guardian angel was actually the dragon-like spirit form of his Zanpakutou.

His self-training was rigorous, if not dangerous, his life always on the line. His grandmother, when she found out, was against it. She was afraid that he might die, like her daughter and son-in-law, which would leave her with no one else in the world.

Matsumoto, feeling protective of the young boy, took it upon herself to instruct Hitsugaya, especially after she found out that Hitsugaya was accidentally freezing his grandmother as his spirit pressure released in his sleep.

Training with Matsumoto proved to be both more difficult, and annoying. He would always argue with her unorthodox methods of teaching. Most of the time, he would have to drag her out of the local bar just to get a lesson. It took only a few years to finally understand how to handle his powers, and to help shape Hyourinmaru's shape.

After learning the basics from Matsumoto, she taught Hitsugaya Shikai, the first release of his Zanpakutou. Through his own determination he surpassed Matsumoto, and later taught himself Bankai, the second release of his Zanpakutou's awesome power. However, Hitsugaya's Bankai is incomplete, due to his age.

Although he surpassed her, Matusmoto realized he needed higher education, and convinced his grandmother allow Hitsugaya to attended Dusk Academy, a school for both magic and fighting skill, and many other talents as well. There, she assured him he would learn more about the world, as well as how to control his powers better.

Upon learning that Hinamori had left for school as well, and that Matsumoto had studied to control her spiritual power and Zanpakutou, it did not take Hitsugaya to sign up for the prestigious academy.

His Zanpakutou is the only other note. To activate his Shikai, he only has to say the words, "Soten ni Zase", which means literally "Sit upon the frosted heavens".

In its Shikai form, Hyourinmaru remains the same, but gains a crescent-shaped blade that attaches to the hilt by a chain. This allows him to control both the elements of water and ice. The slashes that are created by his Zanpakutou give off an energy that overflows from the blade, and creates a flow of ice that resembles the first time he had seen Hyourinmaru's when he was a child.

For his Bankai, which is named Daiguren Hyourinmaru (meaning Great Crimson Lotus Ice Ring), causes ice to flow from Hyourinmaru and onto himself. This forms two large wings (which can fold and be used as a shield) and a tail, resembling those of a dragon, and a dragon's head around his sword hand, which completely covers the hilt, which transforms into an eight-pointed star. His right arm is completely covered in ice up to his wrist, which leaves his hand and fingers free. His feet are, similarly, covered in the same way.

The Bankai has two known abilities, Ryusenka (Dragon Hail Flower), and Sennen Hyoro (Thousand Years Ice Prison). Ryusenka freezes any enemy Hitsugaya stabs, locking them in a cocoon of ice and freezing them to the core, which he can then shatter his opponent. Sennen Hyoro forms numerous amount of ice pillars that envelop the enemy. Hyourinmaru uses moisture in the atmosphere to form the pillars.

Because of his age, it is said that when all the 'petals' of his sword disappear, that his Bankai will fade away. This is because his Bankai is incomplete, or so it is speculated. During a mock fight, it is learned that as long as that there is moisture in the air, the Bankai can reform.
