You can erase the first of the comments below that I sent you, one had some typos hehe ^^;;
Yes, if you use skem9 to make a layout it's a lot like customizing a friendster page because you click on what you want without having to worry about knowing CSS. However, if you don't want to use skem 9 and instead prefer to alter an existing profile code, then it's useful to know CSS because you'll be working directly on the code.
I'll look for you on friendster then ^^

I didn't make my profile from sratch, I merely used skem9 I think, then I edited the code so I could use my own images, removed the advertisement, fixed the problem with the media player display and made some of the panels translucent... but is was done in tries and experiments because I still don't know CSS code, I want to learn but I haven't had the time. I can give you some advice though: when you see a layout that you really like, you can use the code and alter the image links; that way you can have a profile layout that you like and with the theme you want and you will not be offending the creator of the original layout because with different images the layout becomes unrecognizable, so the author can't be associated to something they didn't make. In any case, you can ask the author of the layout for permission to alter it =)
Like I said, I don't know enough CSS to make a layout from scratch, but I have tried many things when I was testing mine so if you have any questions I can help you with feel free to ask ^_^
