yeah, it's pretty expensive, especially for some of the really stupid items. but for the really cool items, it's way worth it.

go to Back Alley Bargains. under the guy is a button that says "Make Recipes." you click that and follow the directions.

select a target by either clicking it or pressing the ~ key. then click on the ring icon that's in the little tray-thing at the bottom of your screen. or you can press the number [1-8] that it corresponds to.
if it's a buff/healing ring, you can select yourself by hitting [space].

the coal is an ingredient used in a recipe. if you get 30 coal, you can make a coal sprite.
how do you kill what? the giftboxes? you have to use your rings.
