Me, Myself, and I

I like to write poetry and to sing. I'm going to start keeping a journal on just my thoughts and emotions about matters that I hear about in the world or about life in general.

The Goldfish Goddess

Sorry it was so long! But I thought having the basics might help.

Another thing about how much room each fish needs is that if adequate filtration and aeration in the form of airpumps and filters are supplied in the tank, you can have more cm of fish per L of water, as the aerator/airpump will supply more oxygen into the water, and the filter will remove more wastes. But this means more water changes.

Damn, I'm even starting to confuse myself now!

The Goldfish Goddess

Thats a tough question to answer, as all fishes needs are different. However, I think you're a wonderful person for wanting to know what they need, not just wanting the money.

Although it is hard to remember what each fish needs, their are easier ways. I suggest getting a copy of a good reliable aquarium book that lists all the species fish and their needs to keep at your work. That way when someone wants to buy a fish you can quickly whip the book out to find out what they need to care for it, and ask the customers if they are able to provide that care.

The main thing to remember is their are 4 types of tank (not shape or size, but how the internal water is kept) and that all chlorine and harmful metals must be removed from a tank before introduing fish (their will be treatments on sale at your store for this)

Freshwater tanks (also known as cold water tanks)

These are for fish like goldfish, cloud minnows and other species that thrive in cold water. As a rule of thumb for every cm of fish, you need a minimum of 10L of water. So say I have 2 common goldfish, and their total length (from nose to base of tail) is 23 cm combined, I would need a 230L tank to keep them healthy. More water is better though, so in this case I would suggest a 250L tank, as the fish will continue to grow. However, some fish will need more Litres per Cm of fish, some less (for instance, a full grown fantail or other fancy goldfish will need less water than a full grown comet or feeder fish). You always have to take into account how big the fish will get to. Say I have a 4cm common goldfish, but he's going to be 20cm when he's full grown. Although a 40L tank would suffice for now, eventually he's going to need a 200L tank.

Tropical tanks (also known as a heated tank, freshwater tropical system or hot tank)

These are the same water conditions as a freshwater tank, but a heater is employed to (obviously) warm up the water. As a rule of thumb, 1cm of fish needs 5L of water in one of these systems. Once again this will vary with the breed of fish. An additional complication with these tanks is that some species will like it hotter, some colder. For instance, a guppy may like its tank sitting on 25 degrees Celsius (sorry, you may have to convert that to Fahrenheit) but the gourami sharing the tank wants it on 28. These fish would be Incompatible, as the temperature difference is to great. An additional note here is that fighting fish are a tropical breed that needs to be kept in a heated 5-10L tank to live its full lifespan. Fighting fish sold in cups die from the cold, and lose their muscle mass from not being able to swim. Alot of tropical fish species are aggressive (lol piranha) so make sure to research if the fish are compatible with each other first.

Coldwater Saltwater tank.

You don't need to fret about this one, as petshops do not sell animals for them. However, a Coldwater Saltwater tank is much like a Freshwater tank, but filled with sea water instead. The types of animals in this system are what you would find on any non-tropical beach. Many people living by the sea will have one of these tanks, as they will collect their saltwater from the sea, and collect their animals from the shore.

Tropical saltwater tank.

The ultimate tank. It's a pain in the a** to keep too. The animals kept in these tanks are what you find along the tropical reefs. They are captured their and transported to a petshop near you. It's rather sad, and that's the reason I only buy fish bred in captivity now. These tanks are very expensive, as synthetic saltwater is needed. The owners of these tanks tend to know what their doing, as they will have kept fish for many years before trying to maintain one of these systems. It must be heated to the right temp for the chosen species living in it (like with the tropical tank, how fish liking different temperatures couldn't live together) Their is no rule of thumb for how many cm of fish you can keep in a L as some
