He has been hidden from the Hyuga clan for many years due to their clan's seperating of the Head family and those born not of straight blood line. His father took him to the Hidden Mist so he would not be forced to bear the mark of the x on his forhead and have to subject himself to the head family. Before making it to the mist his father was hunted down and killed but Kayden was lost. Zabuza found Kayden screaming deep within the Mist and noticed his facial features that of a Hyuga. Zabuza decided he would keep ahold of Kayden to use him for his assassinations. At the age of 12 the Hyuga head family had found out the location of Kayden and sent in an assassin of their own to rid the world of Kayden so no one could get the power of the Byakugan. The assissan found Kayden sleeping he lunged at Kayden who awoke just in time the assassin cut Kayden's face over his eye. Kayden then killed the assassin and took his headband as a trophy that he wrapped over his eye. Kayden stayed with Zabuza for 15 years before he left his side. Knowing the ways of the mist and how to control it as well was of great advantage since he had the power of the Byakugan.
