Oh that is really cool! That's something that plagues theatre designers too; always tricky to balance design and practicality. But at the end of the day, people will need to move in their costumes, and they need to be able to act on their set. rofl With that said, there's compromising a few things throughout the process.

After reading the script, you have to have the initial chat with your director and get a sense of the direction they want to go. The tricky part here is that you come in with your own idea of the show, and it could either support the director's pov or be the total opposite emotion_facepalm Then once you've agreed on the aesthetic, you do a lot of research work (especially for period shows). Personally, I don't sketch anything until I've absorbed as much information as I can lol. Then you go back and forth with your director until you've finalized the show. It continues to evolve as the production manager prices it and tells you it's too expensive rofl I bet it's pretty similar to your work too lol

It was something I fell into during university actually. I wanted to do something artsy but practical, so I decided to take some theatre design classes and here we are. rofl
I personally enjoy working on period shows. I once worked on Vinegar Tom which was both set in the 17th century and modern times.

Oh no, I work with a team of sewers/crafts people depending on which theatre I work with. I know how to sew a tiny bit, but not at their level. lol
How did you get into designing playgrounds? It's such a specialized field me thinks
