Just wanted to say that your comments in the "Why don't people have children" thread are awesome. Sure, I'm biased because it's how I feel too, but I really do appreciate seeing people express these sentiments without freaking out and being defensive or needlessly rude. Hats off to you, mystery person!

There is just so much to learn from ancient cultures and religions from then. Egypt's religions could tie up my entire life in their analysis, it seems.

"I'm sort of agnostic, so never got to do this." - I was at one time atheist, and then I realise that most that I've been able to do cannot be understood in atheist ways. But no shame in that - I respect those atheist/agnostics more than the hypocritical "religious" folk.

"concept of parallel evolution in species in which 2 species independently evolve similar characteristics. " - Use a taxa? XD (might be in the same kingdom, but not the same domain.)

"than if you are coming from a more 'secular' culture-historic question type, where you would be looking more at the gods as cultural/social/etc constructs." - When trying to figure out the relationship between the names of the gods and their similarities, I try to take as an objective/atheistic perspective as possible, so as not to cloud any judgment by saying, "HEY! Astarte looks like Inanna!" or "if this is the storm god Poseidon, then..." you get the picture. XD

"I am in art history and have a background in Anthropology, Egyptology and archaeology. I specialize in Egypt." - That's wicked, am almost envious! I love Egypt as well, and have been since a child; then I learned of Sumer and the Mesopotamian history and fell in love.

Btw, my words were "beetled 89.12" - that better be some good food.

Ah yes, very true, that's why am taking my time and researching to the fullest extent I can - double checking sources, and all that. However, discussing it with the god themselves also helps, but even so, I check with the others just to make sure. XD

Am trying to make a list as well, like an outline, that a certain god is the same if certain criteria are met (say, 5 out of 7 points) or whatever. That should make it easier in the long run!

And what sort of research have you done, may I ask? :] And why the fascination with Egypt?

Ah, too many! However, it's based upon their names and descriptions. For example, Set was god of air/desert/chaos (later on), Enlil was air/breath/wind in Sumerian, Zeus as god of air/thunder/weather in Greek, Thor was god of thunder/air... etc., etc. it's just a long list connecting the dots. XD

Also... damn. I feel so uneducated about religions.

I think I envy you your blank avatar. It's so much more powerful than anything else could be, in its way.

I've been tracing names back all the way to the original gods of Sumer, and the parallel is astounding - Ra is Marduk, the current pantheon ruler, Enlil is Set and his brother Enki, is Osiris. Up until Ra came into the pictures, Set and Osiris were cool (just like in Sumer); and then Ra started getting greedy, and Set was the one who stood against him, which is why both in Sumerian horrid translations and Egyptian beliefs, Set eventually became the evil one. What power and influence can do!

I found you as I was wandering around Maarilat's profile, and I must say, am fascinated to find another Egyptologist! Lady Sekhmet reminds me much of Inanna, the Sumerian Goddess who has a very fiery temper, much like Sekhmet. I've devoted myself to Set, mostly because of the misinterpretations that came from him after Ra came along... Set was demonized by Ra for this, being the power-hungry mad-god that he was.

Anyway, pleasure to find another Egyptian fan! And yes, the felines have always intrigued me more than humans. ;]
