P E R S O N A L I T Y:
The majority of the time, Baralai comes across as a reserved and polite person. It can be assumed that as praetor of New Yevon, he was required to act with a considerable degree of diplomacy and understanding when dealing with various issues, in order to gain and hold onto the respect and support of the followers of New Yevon. He seems to be the type of guy to remain calm and levelheaded in most situations, which was undoubtedly a good characteristic for someone in a position of leadership to possess. Tying into the 'reserved' aspect of Baralai's personality is his tendency to keep certain things to himself – for example, information regarding his own past, Vegnagun and Yevon's secrets.

Delving into Baralai's past shows that he is actually quite laid-back around friends, such as when he and Gippal joked around during their Crimson Squad training days.

Finally, there is another side to Baralai's personality. When he felt that Nooj had betrayed his trust, he held a grudge against him for a long time, and although it isn't a frequent occurrence, Baralai does lose his temper when there is a reason for him to be angry


H I S T O R Y:



The game doesn't go in depth where Baralai's early years are concerned, but what could be considered some of, if not the, most important events in his life is revealed through the Crimson Spheres. At the age of eighteen, he became a candidate for the Crimson Squad. He was assigned to a team with Nooj, Gippal and Paine, who was their recorder. The final training exercise took all the trainee teams to the Den of Woe, where they were supposed to investigate 'something extremely dangerous' inside the cave and report their findings. Upon their return, they would become members of the Crimson Squad. However, inside the cave, all the candidates, with the exception of Baralai, Nooj, Gippal and Paine, ended up killing each other. The three young men came close to meeting the same fate, as the pyreflies (Shuin's intense despair) swarming around the place overwhelmed them as well, resulting in their aiming their guns at each other. Luckily, Paine was able to bring them to their senses and the four made it out of the cave alive. When they reported these events, shortly after hearing that they had apparently been accepted into the Crimson Squad, the Yevonite guards began to shoot at them, but they were able to escape. Meeting up again on the Mi'ihen Highroad, they decided to split up, as it would have been too risky to stay together and move around as a group. Unfortunately, the moment of parting took a shocking turn. Nooj, possessed by Shuin, suddenly shot Baralai, Gippal and Paine.

Some time later, having survived the incident, Baralai reached Guadosalam, where he approached Maester Seymour Guado for help. Any record of his involvement with the Crimson Squad was erased and he decided to go into hiding until 'the time was right'.

After the chairman and the praetor of New Yevon resigned, Baralai was elected to take the praetor's place. As the party's leader, he continued New Yevon's search for spheres of Spira's history. He also wanted to make sure that nobody would ever get their hands on Vegnagun, having had two years in which to discover more about the weapon and realizing just how dangerous it was. With this intention, he attempted to keep Yuna, Rikku and Paine away when they entered Bevelle's underground area in hopes of destroying Vegnagun.

Upon the disappearance of Vegnagun, Baralai went to confirm this troubling situation. He met up with Nooj and Gippal; this led to confronting Nooj about the Mi'ihen Highroad shooting. An understandably angry Baralai was then possessed by Shuin, who left Nooj's body. 'Baralai' moved to shoot Nooj, but he was stopped. He escaped from Bevelle and ended up on the Farplane in pursuit of Vegnagun, followed by Gippal and Nooj.

Baralai finally returned when Shuin left his body after Yuna's group defeated Vegnagun. At the end of the game, he gave a speech in Luca Stadium with Nooj and Gippal, apologizing for past actions that caused a rift between friends and followers.
