"Heart pounding. Chest burning. Keep breathing. Keep going. Got to get away."
Denise's thoughts raced as she sprinted down the dim corridor, looking for away out of the forgotten hospital. Her chest burned with agony, her breath came in short gasps, and the tears continued to flow. She ignored the pain that shot up through her legs with everry step, she did not listen to the screaming of her own fear. All she concentrated on was running, getting away from her own daughter. No, her daughter was dead, along with her freinds, family, and classmates. She was now buried under the soil of hate and despair that had become her soul. The Fern Denise loved, was gone.
Her words echoed in Denise's head as she continued her search. "I am merely correcting the mistakes of the world mother. Isn't that what you wanted me to do? I am created a better future for your grand children, and then their children. Why are you trying to stop me now when I am so close to completing my dream? Don't worry we'll have some mother-daughter time before the end." These words were hollow, held no regret, only truth.
"NO!! Please God no!!! Let me save her please!! Let me save my baby!! The sound of running footsteps, caught Denise's attention. She did not need to look back to know that it was Fern that was pursuing her, nor did she need to see that she was quickly closing the distance between them.
Denise forced her legs to work harder, her breathe to come faster, and only used her will to guide her down the dark hall. "Heart pounding. Chest burning. Keep breathing. Keep going. Got to get away." Gun fire, and then pain. Denise felt the firey pain as the bullet enterd her lower calf, and she shrieked out in agony. With a heavy thunp she landed painfully on the floor and covered the would with her good hand. The tears continued to fall, and her breathe became shorter as her heart gain speed. "Please God No." she wispered over and over, praying for the bleeding, the tears, the suffering to stop. Approaching footsteps forced Denise to cease her crying, to breathe more quietly, and she lifted her head and watched as her daughter stepped from the shadows, gun raised.
Denise let out a small gasp as she viewed her daughter. Her long brunnette hair was tangled and coated with blood, a gash on her jaw revealed a white bone, and her lower lip, hung on merely a fine string of tissue. But her eyes, once full of live, and ever-glowing green, were now nothing but dead and empty windows, that sent shivers down Denise's spine as she gazed into them.
Fern smiled a little, and to her mother's horror, she reached up and ripped off what was left of her lip, and then tossed it into a corner. "It's nice that we finally got to go on a jog together. We never had caulity time together. Well, unless you count hitting me with the crowbar caulity time. By the way, I'm impressed by the number you did on my face, but next time, aim for the base of the skull, to insure a quick death. Or were you not trying to kill me?"
Denise found no strength to talk, and barely found the strength to keep breathing. All she could do was stare into those empty eyes and wait.
"Please don't be mad at me for shooting you. It's just that there's not alot a time left, and we really need to finish this okay? I promise that in the end we'll have plenty of time to play."
Denise began to weep, and her voice quivered asshe wispered, "Please sweety, you are very sick, we need to get you to a hospital. They'll help you, I promise. Then you and I can be be together. Just please, stop this sweety."
Fern's grotesque smile diasappeared and was replace with a scowl. "That's what is wrong with the world. People think they can just put things off until later and then leave their mistakes in the dark so that everyday childern die and people suffer. I plan to end that. I'm going to wipe the world of the hugest mistakes that ever enterd the world. I plan to go all the way with this mother, to the end. You pushed me to take action, and now I am going to finish it."
"This isn't what I wanted Fern!! I wanted you to do your best, not kill off who you think is evil!! There is no justice, there is no fiarness!!"
" DO NOT TELL ME WHAT IS FAIR AND WHAT IS NOT!!!", screamed Fern, "Everyday of my life, I did as I was told, I worked hard and loved my family. But all I did was hurt the people around me. I plan to fix it, and your rushing me?! Rushing causes mistakes, and mistakes grow!! Now let me do what needs to be done!!"
Denise felt her heart shatter. There was no way of saving Fern and she knew that she was going to die. "No mistakes left in the darkness.", she wispered. She gazed into her daughter's dead eyes,"I'm sorry Fern. I'm so sorry. I thought that I neede another adult in my life to help me be happy. But all I really needed was you. I only wanted you to fulfill your dreams, to get farther in life in me. But now I see, that in the end, you became lost, and died without me realizing it.", lifting herself straight and raising ger voice, she staed boldly, "I love you my daughter. I always have and always will. And I couldn't be more proud to call you my baby."
Fern, with what was left of her lip, smiled and said,"I love you too mom. now close your eyes and go to sleep. I'll see you in the morning." Denise closed her eyes and waited. The sound of a gunfire, and everything whent black.
She slowly opened her eyes and found herself staring at the ceiling with the lights glaring down at her. Doctors sped by to help other patients and the sound of chatter from down the hall reached her ears. Slowly, her senses came back, along with the memories. Screaming, pain, gunfire, and then complete darkness. She reached up and covered her bandaged face and wept. Some squeezed her hand and she turned her head to see Robert sitting next to her bed. With tears filling his eyes, he leaned over and kissed her on her forehead. He wispered, "Good morning Denise."
