Elizabeth stepped out into the open outdoors, inhaling the scent of the fresh air happily. After being cooped up for hours while the squads of army men passed their house, she was just grateful to be out of the disgusting house, the air inside filled with the stenches of death and moldy food. She ran a hand through her brown hair, freeing it from her shirt where she stuffed it to get it out of the way. The long tresses caught the fading sunlight and turned almost auburn. This damned war sickened her. She hated the constant stream of soldiers, some injured, some dying, moaning and begging for food and water. It was pathetic, disgusting and dull. Elizabeth stood in the sun absorbing its warmth a long moment until her mothers shrill voice called her back into the stuffy house. With a sigh of irritation, she stuffed the silken locks back and turned to the house, walking back towards it.

Elizabeth took on several chores a moment later, bringing the pitchers down into the cellar irritably. Her worn clothes were stained as well, ugly and ragged and meant for working. Her father grimly smiled at her and thanked her before returning to the soldier whose wounds he was binding. Liz looked away, disgusted by the sight of the festering wounds, sickly sweet with the stench of gangrene. She left the room quickly and went back to the area where her mother was. The older one dismissed her, thus leaving her free to her evening. Inwardly, she was screaming happily. Outwardly, she only nodded and with a tiny smile, turned and left, walking back down the empty hall. She went to her room and quickly changed into a clean tan dress and brushed her hair so that it flowed around her shoulders and covered the contours of her small breasts. Then, pulling on small leather shoes that she'd stolen and kept without her parents knowledge, left the house, locking her door to feign actually being in her room while she was gone. Those two would have punished her had they known of her leaving without permission and such. She ran off towards the woods to enjoy the night as she pleased.

Elizabeth reached the edge of the woods in almost no time, stopping to catch her breath once she was out of sight. The small leather shoes were good for moving along quietly, undetected. She preferred them to the tight, blistering slippers she had to wear anyhow. Her hair streamed and the roguish look overcame her face again as she looked around the woods mischievously, plotting her next grand evening. After a moment, Elizabeth took off again, her little feet carrying her deeper into the dark forest. It was hard to pick up the individual shapes of things with her dull mortal eyes, but she endured, her feet remembering the feel of the woods- a route she constantly used- as she went. In her right hand, she held her little knife, one she'd grabbed from under her pillow before leaving. The war was fought somewhat far from where she lived so the chance of her stumbling upon soldiers- friend or foe- was very unlikely; still, she armed herself for the unlikely chance she'd actually run across one. There had been too many accounts of rape and murder of youth in the past that there was no point in risking it. She came upon a slow-flowing river, broad and black, the churning water caps turning white. She stopped to stare over it, enjoying the cool air it brought with and the roar it created.

She knelt down and dug into the reddish mud, smearing it delicately over her face. It made her feel more savage that way. After a minute, she grew tired with the sight and sound of the river and turned away, walking across, back towards the path with ease. Her eyes had adjusted a little more and she was now able to see her way across the area she knew very well. Why not go in a little further tonight, she thought, her heart beating with excitement. It would be heavenly to break the rules even further by spending more time out. Maybe one day she'd just run away and live in the woods. Of course, she didn't have the skills required to do so- to hunt, to watch out for certain plants, etc. In England, there was no forest: just houses. The only forest she saw, and that thoroughly enticed her, was that of the illustrations in books. She heard a twig crack and turned to see the tail of a squirrel heading up a tree. She grinned at the sight of the small grey creature before it vanished into a tree top. Then she turned and continued her descent into the deeper woods, walking with a slow gait as she took in all the sights and smells of the woods- fresh pine, red bark and ferns. She saw a feather on the ground and picked it up, grinning and putting it in her hair.

Elizabeth, finding herself trapped all a sudden by a wolf, forgot to scream. The wolf raised its head and she was almost nose to nose with it. She'd have panicked, however she realized the wolf would certainly kill her if she made any sudden movements. The snow fur looked soft and silken, but the eyes held a certain calm intelligence that almost seemed human to her. She'd probably have been able to appreciate the wolfs beauty more if it hadn't been looking like it was going to eat her. The wolf moved off of her slowly, backing away a bit as if about to strike a second time, this with the intent of murder. Elizabeth got up a bit slowly and hesitantly, dusting her dress off. She did not dare blink nor look away from it. She wasn't even aware there were wolves in these woods. In all the times she'd been in out here, she'd seen deer, lizards and many strange beasts, however the wolf was never one of them. She didn't move, hoping the wolf would back away so she could run like hell from that place.

Uncomfortable by the wolfs odd behavior, Elizabeth didn't dare even twitch a muscle. She wondered if it was rabid: she should try her luck and throw her knife at it as a distraction, before climbing a tree. She didn't know if wolves could climb, but it looked like a big dog, so perhaps it was only a ground hunter. Still.... something about the eyes struck her as odd. It wasn't as if the wolf was ill or even mad, but more like it was trying to read her. The intelligence both disturbed her and lured her in. Her feet moved without her even realizing, slowly taking a single step towards the wolf and putting her weight on that foot. She put her face in a deliberate ignorance. The wolf flinched ever so slightly, but she took another slow, cautious step, keeping eye contact to let the wolf know she wasn't going to hurt it. She stopped a good few feet from it and without blinking, stood there, awaiting it to make its move. Liz hoped it would work. If not, she was about to become wolf food. This was something that had worked on multitudes of horses and mules in the past, so perhaps a great wolf would go for it and not kill her. So she hoped.

Elizabeth noticed the little head gesture and cautiously reached, touching the silky white fur, uncertain if what she was doing right. She could see the little tremors in her arms and wondered if the wolf saw them as well. If so, why wasn't it trying to kill her? Its behavior was... strange. Liz really wasn't certain as what to make of the odd behavior, only that it struck her as not quite normal. However it did not and so she ran her hand over the silky fur, admiring how soft it was. The wolf fur was softer then even that of the rabbits who combined together, made her favorite muffler a whole. The strands were medium length, tapering into longer locks. This white beast, if killed, would make such a silky coat. However her intent to kill it only faded, adding to her curiosity of it in general. After a moment, as to not aggregate the wolf, she slowly lowered her hand, backing off a tiny bit from it. There was no point in getting herself eaten by startling it.
