Random Work
The following pieces are just a few random things I put together over the course of this past year. Everything is from some related project from school, and if some parts sound odd…it is because we had to include them into our work. I don’t think these are the best things that I have ever written, but the several people whom I let read these enjoyed them. So you don’t have to read anything. Hell, why are you even reading this now if you weren’t curious about my work? So here a few stories and poems I wrote. Oh, and just to let you know—some parts are just rushed sounding because there was a limit of words. So without further ado…

POETRY

Little Miss Madeline

Little Miss Madeline
Perched upon the stairs
Smiling and giggling gleefully
Without a single care

But who would ever think
That this pleasant, petite lass
Ached tremendously inside her chest
Watching so many strangers pass

She was alone in this world
Living on the streets
Not a penny to her name
Not a single bite to eat.

For her father had passed away
Not many months before
Her daddy gone and buried
All because of the blasted war.

He was always there for Madeline
Until that fateful day
His soul was sold to the country
One more slave sent away.

Daddy was gone for a while
It didn’t faze Madeline at all
Until she saw the video tape
Watching her father fall.

Madeline entered the room
And saw Mama watching the tape
Her eyes so red, raw, racing with tears
Watching her husband, father, fail to escape.

There her father dropped down
A fatal bullet to his head
He was just an innocent man
One more prisoner of war dead.

So now Madeline, her tiny feet so bare
Tiny toes tapping the surface of the water
Puddles staring blank like a dead man’s eyes
Crying for Madeline, a lost daughter
Mama couldn’t handle this
This tremendous amount of pain
So with a knife she took her life
Cutting several of her vital veins.

Now Madeline was too a prisoner
Of a war her parents did create
No amount of tears could free her
It was just another joke of cruel Fate.

She was the darkness
She was the validation
Even adults can’t live their life
Balancing so much frustration

Cold and staring, Madeline wept
Wishing these deeds could go undone
If only she knew
That the horrors had just begun

The heavens above glistened with tears
The clouds rumbling of thunder
Reeking misery unto the land
Madeline wishing she was six feet under.

**Yeah...this was for a small poetry project. It is about a little girl whose father had passed away over seas (a soldier who was a POW) and a mother so overcome with grief killed herself. Madeline has nothing left to live for and is on her own. And thinking about death. such a wonderful child...

Unearthly Angel

Why must life be full of displeasure?
Taking away everything we hold so dear
Casting us away into the darkness
Never is there hope for us to reach the surface
And take a much-needed breath
We only drown is despair
Only a select few can escape this sea of misery
One who is full of life and opportunity
And not afraid to break free from the crowd
A sickly child with the imagination of a mirror
What is thy name, you ask?
Isannah, Isannah Lapham.

Such a pretty little lass
What can possibly be wrong with this child?
You gaze upon her with a tender heart.
Never would you know behind her exterior of smiles and joy
That she was a fatherless child
Stripped from her loving mother
And into the home of a wealthy merchant
Along with her older sister, Pricilla
Who is more like a servant
Than a beloved sister
Someone to love
A shoulder to cry on
Now Pricilla has been cast aside
And replaced by none other than Lavina Lyte

Isannah consists of the beauty of a thousand angels
Her delicate face that of a porcelain doll
Flaxen hair that appears to be sown from golden thread
Glistening in the sunlight, always adorned with a ribbon
Liquid chocolate eyes melting away the hearts of men
Always stopping her on the street to admire her beauty
And give her treats for being so angelic
A cherub in the flesh
Waltzing her way across Boston
And into the hearts of many strangers

Fragile as the teacup in which she drinks from
If dropped she just might shatter
But her heart will never suffer
For she is conceited as can be
Only caring about herself and no one else
Except her puppet master
Lavina Lyte

**My first attempt at free verse. I find rhyming much easier on the brain to write, but maybe that is just me. This poem is about a character, Isannah, from the book Johnny Tremain.

Short Stories

Final Chapter

The musical voices were more like mere whispers in the frigid winter air, floating on the crisp wind eventually becoming a dull roar. But Jonas’s eager ears took the sweet melody with open arms, not wanting to ever let go of such a blissful lullaby. Jonas never heard music before, and the new sound was welcomed so warmly. It reminded him of the friend he left behind, the person who had to deal with the insanity of such a communistic community.

He had to stay strong for Gabriel, who was fitfully fidgeting on the crimson sled. Besides the fading music, there was no other sound to be heard. Gabriel wasn’t uttering a single sound, and if it wasn’t for his constant movement Jonas would have surely believed the newchild was dead. Jonas slowly arose from his current position on the sled, trying to remain steady on two feet. Between having a sprained ankle and shivering nonstop, it took him a few moments to grow steady on his own two feet. Bobbling like a drunkard, until his shivers calmed to slight tremors that constantly rippled through him. Once he was sure that he would not collapse, Jonas bent down and lifted Gabriel and wrapped Gabe’s ratty blanket around his shoulders. This was to protect the two from the light shower of snowflakes that were presently falling.

Gabriel was not a very hefty child, but it took most of Jonas’s deterring strength to balance the frigid body onto his own. Jonas’s feet began to move forming the stiff movements of a weary tread. Jonas had been walking for what seemed like hours until he reached a large gate that towered over his head. Immediate thoughts of failure flooded through his mind. He had failed his mission, to save Gabriel from death. Now the two would die as insignificant beings that never made a difference in the world. Jonas glowered at the ground for a few minutes, until he felt a rush of air kiss his cheek.

Two figures stealthily slipped out of the protective gate, each slender silhouettes that barely stood out from the shadows that were cast upon the snow. Jonas didn’t recognize the fact that he was staring because for the last few months he had been excused from rudeness. Besides he never saw anything like these two people. The two shadows stepped out to face Jonas with affectionate, hospitable faces. The figures were two females. Identical twins to be exact. The females did not look too much younger than Jonas; perhaps back in his own community they would be considered Tens at the youngest. They each had flaxen tresses with the slightest hint of honey, the heavenly locks flowing down to the smalls of their slim backs. It didn’t seem to matter that it was freezing cold outside, for they both wore gowns of pure ivory, the material falling slightly off the shoulders and leaving a train of silk on the snow covered ground. Nothing seemed to matter to the twins except Jonas and Gabriel’s arrival.

“Welcome Jonas.” A musical voice sang as the first female approached, a heartwarming smile formed on her complexion as she bared her pearly white teeth.

“Welcome Gabriel.” The second twin spoke as divinely as the first, but this time making an effort to retrieve Gabriel from Jonas’s grasp. He was amused that the two stunning girls knew his name, and was horrified that they knew Gabe’s. Gabriel hadn’t even been named yet; in fact today the newchild would be long past dead. Jonas winced as the warm fingers of the girl touched his bare flesh, but didn’t prevent the girl snatching the infant away from him.

Gabriel was smiling and even giggling for the first time in days. Soon her was enfolded into an ornately decorated blanket that must have been draped over one of the female’s shoulders. The second female was cradling Gabriel lovingly, cooing softly comforting words that the baby surely did not understand. The first female motioned her hand for Jonas to follow her, and soon the four children slipped through the gates and into the community. As soon as Jonas stepped inside, he was met by at least a hundred people gathered in the tiny community square, cheering and praising his name. Everyone possessing strange, pale eyes. Jonas grinned weakly as he pursued behind the two females who led him up a long trail of stairs into a grand building.

The room inside the building was very warm, and such heat effortlessly relaxed Jonas. One girl motioned for him to sit on a cushioned bench, as the other remained standing rocking the now sleeping Gabriel. With the first female sitting across from him, she began to talk, pronouncing her words with such ease it made Jonas think of Asher.

“Thank you for bringing Gabriel to us. He is going to save us from ourselves…” As she spoke her pale cerulean eyes glistened with bliss.

“What do you mean?” Jonas inquired anxiously, wondering where he fit into this surprising news.

“We don’t need you anymore Jonas. I’m sorry your stay was so short. I hope you enjoyed your stay.” The female announced cheerfully as she spelled out Jonas’s fate. Without another word, the female stood and gracefully skipped over to Jonas, who was sitting at the edge of the bench. She placed her pointer and middle finger in the center of Jonas’s forehead, the sudden warmth of her touch made Jonas fret. He was paralyzed by her touch, unable to slide away from her feeble clutch. The fingers retreated for a fraction of a second and then returned, providing a fatal blow to Jonas’s head.

“Thank you for your childhood.” The female mocked Jonas in a singsong voice, watching Jonas’s body fall to the ground like a limp rag. Jonas could hear the female’s voice, and began to fade into the darkness. He retreated into an ebony tunnel, and didn’t even feel his cadaver hit the floor with full force. Instead he realized that the female had killed him, and it was then that he heard the high-pitched giggling of someone far in the distance. He would never be sure who it was; it could have been the female mocking him in death…or perhaps little Gabe.

**This was the "final" chapter of the novel The Giver. I had a limit on space, so the ending is quite rushed. I suppose you would ahve to read the whole book, or know of the sotry to understand this. Basically the people from Jonas's and Gabriel's community lived in a "Utopia" environment and Jonas escapes with Gabriel in search for a better life. Long story short, Jonas didn't make it...

More might be added later...if I feel like it...
