In case any of you didn't know I play 1st baseman and pitcher on my softball team. These are tales of last night's wild events at the league...
Now this started out as a normal game. We showed up as the sun was setting and a few people were in the stands watching the 'Minni' game that was finishing up. Me and my coaches' family were the first to arrive as usual. So there I was watching the ending of that game when one of my coaches, Coach Melissa, came up beside me and said, "I've been wanting to talk to you."
Now you can imagine in the back my mind I'm thinking, Oh no. What did I do? This made me a little uneasy and I had to shift my weight a little. I don't know if it was because I was getting sick or because I knew a long talk was coming up. Boy was I in for it.
This is what she said, and I quote, "Kayla, (this is my real name by the way) You are really good, but you would be even better if you thought that. I mean that's the whole reason I put you on first base, because you think about things. I can see this when you play and when you pitch. It shows in your eyes, and that's what you need when playing first base. Not only that but for never pitching before you're great! (She is referring to the that a couple of games ago I pitched for the first time in a real game in my life and only once after that. Now back to the story.) With some instruction from a coach, well a coach that specializes in coaching pitching, you could be fenaminal! (sorry for the spelling sweatdrop ) Anyways I just wanted you to know that you can go really far if you just keep it up." Now it was much, much longer than this. gonk But I don't want to bore you too much...
Now all I could do in response the very long speech was nod. I know retarded response but what did you want me to do? Say "Yeah I know,"? You can't believe how relieved I was to see my friend Jessica arrive to bail me out of an awkward pause.
TEN MINUTES LATER...
We were out on the field warming up with the team when I noticed something. Where were the umps? For crying out loud our own umpires didn't want to stay for the game. why you ask? Well i later found out it was because they weren't getting paid. Now you can imagine this made quite a few people angry. Especially The woman running the concession stand. Next thing us and the members of the audience knew she was cussing her lungs out at the man with the cash box to get his a** over there. This is when the other team comes on the scene, all four of them.
So let's re-cap we've got no umpire, a raging concession stand manager, and our opponent has four players. But wait! It doesn't end there! Instead of forfeiting they pull members of the audience and our coach. This is no longer a game, it's a circus!
Now let's move on to the game/show. We were winning, (big surprise stare ) everything is going fine, at least that is what we were thinking. When suddenly our other coach, who was acting as the umpire, was switched with some guy who was on the other teams side. Apparently coach was being biased. Anyways this new guy comes in who definably hated me comes in and is calling strikes on stuff I had to jump away from! Finally I got walked to first base. The next batter came up, got a great hit... to second base, my base. By some miracle I made it though, I was breathing my sigh of relief when I hear, "OUT!"
I was ready to punch some one out and and I would have if I didn't have to go straight back out to first base. This inning went by quick but that was only because after the first batter struck out my coach came out of their dugout looking pissed as hell. Next thing we knew the game was over and we were getting a lecture on good sportsmanship how lucky she was to have a team as polite as ourselves.
Lesson of the story: Don't get into softball unless you have a therapist who works cheap. rofl
