Today our Great Dane, Boris, was finally taken to the vet to be put to sleep. He didn't quit make it to his seventh birthday, but we knew it was time.
A couple months ago we noticed that his legs were really swollen so we took him in to see the vet.
The doctor knew almost immediantly that it was lymphoma. Lymph node cancer. She gave him only two to four months to live, and sure enough he started suffering a little after two months.
His final night was peaceful, and for some odd reason I wanted to stay up all night with him, which I did. I don't think I had the heart to watch him go to sleep for the last time, but I'm not sad.
Boris was a gift to my stepdad, Len, so he's the one hurting most about this.
I guess Boris was my childhood dog [along with Nadine, his sister] and when I look back, I remember everything as if it were yesterday.
Boris loved toys, and he lied on three of his favorites the last night. They're stilling laying there, waiting to be nibbled on by their master.
Now we're just loving on Nadine, whom, I think, knew about Boris' health.
He was a good dog, more than I ever gave credit for.
