Pant's book of wonders
I've missed you.
"Ricktor?" a girl called, knocking on the front door of her friend's house. "Are you home? I needed to talk to you?"
The fairly lean girl reached forward, gripping the door knob lightly, and then twisting. It was unlocked. She stepped into the man's home quietly, taking off her large straw hat, and hanging it on a hook on what was supposed to be a coat rack, and then slipping out of her blue sandals.
Gently, she pushed the door shut again, and ventured into the house. Her feet padding quietly on the floor. "Ricktor?" she called again, her voice as soft as velvet,"Ricktor I-" the young woman stopped short, spotting her friend sleeping, slumped over his desk. His arms folded, to support his head.
"Ricktor," her voice cooed, as she wandered over to her friend. She reached out, touching his shoulder gently,"Ricktor....have you been up all night, running numbers again?"
Her nimble fingers pulled free a sheet of paper from under the mans forearms, as he began to awake. "Still trying to figure out how to get those goti clips babe?" she asked, watching Ricktor blink his sleepy eyes.

The previous night, he had stayed awake, figuring ways to sell items to get what he desired the most: Goti Clips. He had decided to take a break, folding his arms and resting his eyes as he leaned over his desk.
He had not realized how tired he was.
He fell right to sleep.
__

Daylight poured into his windows, melting away the icy light of the moon and washing the walls in afternoon gold. He never bothered to close the drapes when he came home that night. Apparently, he forgot to lock the door as well.
He did not dream. Ever since he first moved to Gaia, he never dreamed. But that was better than the night terrors that gripped him heretofore.

Shaken awake, a platinum brow furrowed in irritation, and then in confusion before finally smoothing away once he recognized his friend, even through the blur of sleep.

Adjusting to the bright light, his pupils strained, forcing him to wince and his eyes to tear over. However, when she asked him that fateful question, all lethargy seemed spelled away. His back became rigid.
"Yes," he admitted. Perhaps this was becoming an obsession.

"I left the door open?" he finally questioned, raking a hand through his slipshod mane. He hadn't known Gaia to be a criminal-wrecked society, but there were a few bad apples. Luckily it was she who had turned up in his home, and not some thief. He studied the contents strewn on his desk. The newspaper remained open to the advertisement of the clips.

The young woman smiled fondly. "Yes you did silly," her voice held a playful tone as her wolfish tail wagged, "I just dropped by, to talk to you, I thought you'd be awake. I'm sorry to have woken you. You look like you need sleep."

His mouth broke into a smile as he continued to comb at his disheveled hair. He tried pushing it back from his forehead. It only left it in a bristle of silver. Figuring it was a lost cause, he settled for cleaning the mess off his work area.
“I have to be more careful then,” he admitted with a frown. “So excited over the news…” A quick glance was given toward his phone. There were no messages. Daisuke never returned his call.

The scattered utensils stashed away and his desktop clear once again, he turned around in his chair, finally regarding her in her entirety. A smile returned to his face at her swishing tail. His own swayed as well, thumping against the strut of his seat.
“I trust you’ve been well?”

"Yes, I've been well. Working hard in my art shop, orders keep flying in. But, it's a good thing. I've needed the extra gold." The woman trailed off, her blue eyes dropping down to her hands, where she was twiddling her thumbs together. "I've ah..." she began, but trailed off, looking back up to watch her friend.

It wasn't very often he received visitors. He was still a fresh face in town, having relocated here only seven months ago. Still, that did not stop the scores of shady businessmen trying to scam him out of his shop, or those who were interested in his friendship solely for his donations.
Friends.
His friends were limited. His dedicated friends were even more scarce. Pant Devil was one of the few he cherished. He nodded at the mention of her other shop. Of course her business was blooming; she was good at what she did. But when she suddenly trailed off in a sudden grip of coyness, a sterling brow moved slowly upward; a display of mild bewilderment and curiosity. His lupine tail ceased its gentle wagging. He tilted his head.

"Something the matter?" His voice lowered and softened from its usual steely burr. Standing from his seat he motioned for her to follow into his kitchen. "We'll have some tea and croissants while we talk. Does that sound good?"
Did she really have a choice? He had already disappeared into the threshold, having made the suggestion while talking to her over his shoulder. Soon after, the sound of him rattling through the cupboards filled the silence.

She never bought presents. There never was anyone to give them to. No one that stayed. Just the normal people that, acted nice and friendly up front, and once they got what they wanted from you, they disappeared. Ricktor had been different. He'd stayed. Actually given present back. It was a relief. After being in Gaia, for almost two years now, she finally felt she had met someone she could trust...
The girl sat still a moment, before fluttering her wings, and running after her friend. "I've got you a present!" she smiled, peeking into the kitchen. "It's nothing special or anything...Just something I found the other day, that made me think of you."
She scampered over next to Ricktor, helping him get things out for the both of them. "You have sugar right? For my tea?" she smiled sweetly up at her friend.

He had been rummaging for a kettle to boil the water when her cherubic face peeked around into the kitchen. She was absolutely charming. In ways, she had the affable and pure spirit of a child, which had engendered in him a need to be protective of her.
In days long since passed, his genial smiles had been rare; mirthless, sardonic leers had dominated his face. Now, effortlessly, she drew them out of him many times since they met.
Pulling out two saucers and matching cups, along with the aforesaid kettle, he was lucky to have set them down before she announced a gift. Otherwise, the porcelain and metal would have clattered to the floor.

"But!—" he exclaimed, turning to look at her nonplussed. His mouth worked, but nothing came out. And then finally, "Oh no. You shouldn’t have. You've done so much for me already." He could only stare as she walked by his side, helping him with the simple chore. He nudged her away with a washboard hip. "You are the guest. I will not allow any guest of mine help out around the house. Shoo!"

He gave another playful nudge before ushering her toward the dinette table. "And yes, I have sugar. I wouldn’t have my tea any other way."
His ivory skin had very little way of masking the crimson that rose to his cheeks. He felt like a total mooch! Then again, he always had a hard time of accepting gifts, so as long as he exchanged one of his own. Filling the kettle with water, he set it on the stove to heat. Then he turned to face the little devil…ironically outfitted in angelic wings.
"Do you like lemon in your tea?"

"Oh please," she smiled, before wandering over to the table, and setting down the small back she had on her back. She pulled free a small box, that she had neatly wrapped, and tied shut with a blue bow. She put it down, and looked into the kitchen at Ricktor. "It's nothing special, don't be mad. Please."

"Mad? Why would I be mad? I'm thrilled that you've thought of me! But I don't want you spending on me when you have 'quests' of your own to complete."
He moved toward a cabinet, retrieving a baking sheet, and then dug through his refrigerator for the croissants. Though he avoided eye contact with the neatly wrapped present, he could not help but wonder what was in the box. Unwillingly, his wolf-like tail oscillated in the air with excitement.

Setting the dough on the sheet pan, he looked toward her, "I mean it. Besides...you have the outfit I made up for your contest to finish, right?" He paused for a second, a thin brow furrowing with thought. "Or did you finish that already?"
Still mulling over that, he opened the oven and placed the pan inside. He set the temperature.

Then the kettle whistled.

Grabbing a mitt, he took it off the stove, pouring the steaming water into the cups. Next, he dunked the tea bags. "How much sugar? And what about the lemon?"

"A lemon is good. and, two spoons of sugar please," The girl smiled, thinking back to that contest she held, where they had first met. That outfit the man had made was beautiful. She still had the picture of it at her house. "You should make me another sometime Ricktor. one that has my ruff, were tail, and long drag included. I like the outfits you put together. better than I can do."
The girl's tail began to wag anxiously, waiting for Ricktor to open his present and see what she had found for him.

Locating the timer, he turned the dial, setting it for the appropriate time until the croissants cooked. He set it on the kitchen counter. Then he took the sugar from another cupboard. It was in a ceramic jar; the lid was a caricature of Gambino's head, and his body was the remainder of the container. He scooped two teaspoons of sugar into her cup. Three was given for him.
"I enjoyed making them, too. I think I will try and make another for you." He smiled over his shoulder at her before his head disappeared into the refrigerator.

He pulled out a fresh lemon and sliced it in half. Holding one halve over her cup, he squeezed a few drops into her cup and his own. Leaving the mess out to clean up later, he carried their cups to the table, sitting down across from her.
"Should I open it now?!" he asked excitedly. Reaching across the table, he fingered the big blue bow. "Mm. My favorite color."

Judging by her anxious antics, he didn't have to wait for her answer. Pulling the gift towards him, he began to carefully unwrap it. Stripping the box of its decor, he opened the lid.

A hand gingerly covered his mouth in amazement. He met her gaze across the kitchenette. For a while, he couldn't speak. Without preamble, he leaned across the table, surprisingly avoiding the steaming teacups, and gathered her in a tight hug. "Oh my God!" he barked.

"You like them Ricktor?" The girl smiled ever so softly, hugging her friend back. "I got them just for you..."

He pulled away far enough to look at her. "Like them? I love them." Beaming ridiculously, he lightly pinched her nose between the knuckles of his index and middle finger. "One of these days, I will surprise you just the same."

Reclining back into his seat, the tea forgotten for now, he took out the clips, fastening them to his hair. "How do I look?" He struck an exaggerated pose. They felt wonderful. Not that they massaged his scalp or anything. It felt wonderful wearing them.

To think he was going to sell his katana. However, should she want it, it was hers to have.
"I-I don't know what to do with myself. You little devil: I owe you big time!"

"Ah babe," the girl giggled, a red hue coming to her cheeks,"You don't owe me nothing. It was a present. I got it for you, because I wanted to give it to you. And, you look great. I'm glad I got them for you."

"I suppose so. But one day, I will have the honor of seeing you surprised and delighted."
Removing the clips from his unkempt hair, he set them back into their box, moving that aside.
"I mean it. Maybe not with a gift, but with something that will make your day." Flashing another smile, he picked up his tea, taking a muted sip. "So...anything new happening? What about your shop? Any challenging orders?"

"One order, a guy named Quog, ordered 20k worth of art. But, it's good. He gave me the gold ahead of time, so I could get these for you, before any inflation hit. But yeah, he's gonna have alot of art pieces coming in, once he decided on all of them." The girl laughed,"But, I've had alot to work on lately, more than usual. I cut the prices in half, to get more business, to raise gold and stuff like that."
The woman paused, taking a quiet sip of her tea. "Wow Ricktor, this is really good."

commentCommented on: Sun Jul 29, 2007 @ 04:19am
His eyes widened at the sum, "Wow. You're going to be a very busy lass."
He grinned with pride at her compliment, "Thank you. It's one of the few things I can make decently."
The timer sounded, and he rose from his chair to the oven. Grabbing the mitt, he took out the sheet of croissants, setting them on the counter to cool. "I wouldn't say that I am a terrible cook, but there are a lot of things I'm positively clueless on how to make. If it were not for the microwave, I would not exist today."

Casually removing the mitten, he returned to his seat. "Which would be a shame because we wouldn't have met. There is a big significance in that invention." He chuckled, the laugh throaty and soft.
"Oh! That's right. We haven't discussed the bribe properly yet. So far, there's the two donation letters from that mysterious benefactor. But I don't think that is enough for the type of work you do. What else can I put in the pot to sweeten it?"

"I thought two letter was fine. You don't need to worry about paying me any more than that," The girl smiled, something she found herself doing alot around the man. Her tail began to wag again, as she took another drink of her tea. "I'm so glad you like my present....When I found out you were questing them, I worked really hard to beat you to it. I'm glad I did. I love giving you things. It makes me happy..."

His cup was poised for a sip, but he halted. "Yeah? You know..." He deposited his cup back onto its saucer, "you are too good to me."
It seemed that whenever they were together, smiles always were in abundance. Another one was spreading across his generous mouth.

"Well, I was far behind on the quest, so even if it took you amonth to raise the money, you wouldn't have to worry about me beating you to it. I was browsing Crate & Apparel when I saw those Plaid SKA pants. I decided I had to have them, and Liam didn't make it any better." He shook his head at the humor, "He is a good salesman. I couldn't pass them up. I wanted to pay cash for it, but I was a little short. So I paid in gold. And then there were the Sayoran's goggles I saw in the marketplace..."

He began to laugh, "So you see, I get distracted very easily when it comes to quests. I need to practice more self-control, I suppose. "

"It's a good thing you have me then," the young woman smiled, stretching her angelic wing a moment, before folding them perfectly along her back. She stared down into her cup for sometime, before taking another sip of the wonderful liquid. "So, what have you been up to these past few weeks Ricktor?" She looked over at him with her deep blue eyes, a smile spreading onto her smooth lips.

"You're right. I am lucky to have found out about you." Idly, a squarely clipped nail skated along the lip of his warm cup, his nickel-colored eyes studying her oceanic ones.
"I haven't been up to anything worthwhile, actually. Strolling through the towns, enjoying the summer weather. I recently added a fancy banner to my store-front. That would be the biggest event so far. Aside from your gift, that is."

He was somewhat of a loner. No new tales of a run-in with another Gaian, no story of a party he attended.

With an airy swish of his downy tail, he stood to retrieve the croissants. Carrying the pan to the table, he sat them before her. "I think they're warm enough to eat." Plucking one, he took a bite, silently marveling at how they turned out. Lightly flakey on the outside, moist on the inside. For a moment, flaxen lashes closed over his eyes as he chewed.
"Mmm. You must also be my good luck charm. Usually, when I make these, they don't turn out this good."

Opening his eyes as he moved to sit again, he gave an almost coy look, "Or it could be that it just taste better in the company of someone you like."

"Maybe it's both," the girl chuckled, getting one for herself, and taking a bit out of it. She was silent for quite awhile before she murmured,"These ARE really good..."
After gaining back a little of her composure, she spoke. "I haven't been up to much. Just working in my shop, or sleeping through the long hot days, and wandering out at night when it's cooler out. But even then sometimes I hole myself up inside. Summer really isn't my month. Fall and winter are. I think things look so much more beautiful during those two months. And I get to bundle up, rake up leaves, and fall sleep in a pile, while out counting the stars, and drinking some cocoa, or hot tea. Then during the winter, I can watch it snow all day long, and make snow angels, and snow forts...curl up in front of the fire place at night...best times of my life...sometimes the simple things, are the most enjoyable, and meaningful."
The girl smiled to herself. Wow did she know how to talk a lot.

commentCommented on: Sun Jul 29, 2007 @ 05:47am
"I would like to think that it is both." His smile grew in scope as he watched her eat. He was glad they turned out right. He had hoped they would, or else he would have been embarassed. Periodically, as he listened to her talk, he took bites of his croissant and sipped at his cooling tea. All the while, he couldn't think of anything he'd enjoy most other than basking in her company. While she was present, he could almost forget the past that made him who he was...and what he did not want to be.

Only when she had finished did he say anything: "Fall and winter, though two beautiful seasons, are not my most favorite. However, I enjoy the autumnal weather more than winter. I guess it's the pessimist in me, but I find winter to be...tomblike. Underneath that gorgeous blanket of white, lie things that have perished because of it. Summer...I like, but I dislike the excess heat. So...I am more partial to spring. The weather is just right, the snow has melted away, and life has started over again."
He paused, his sterling brows knitting closer, "In a way, my life has been like the springtime. I have started it over here in Gaia. And so far, it is blossoming quite nicely."

His slight frown faded gradually as he managed to give a thin smile, "But I agree that the simplest pleasures in life mean the most. I've never done the things you have said, but now I have plans to do so when September comes."

"I wouldn't have it any other way." Polishing off the remainder of his tea, he reclined in his seat, gazing up at the ceiling. It was amazing how time just flew away; like sand sifting past one's fingers. Buds of shadows were beginning to blossom on the plaster, stretching their petals far and wide. The bright afternoon light had slipped cat-quick into the night.

"I never realized how late it is now," he mused aloud. Letting his head loll to the side, he studied her with a sidelong gaze, "Not that I mind, it's just funny how time just waltz past you and you never realize until the moon has come up. Especially when you're around your friends."

Standing, he moved toward a floor lamp, switching it on. It banished some of the gloom, but created different shadows in different corners of the kitchen.
"Sometimes at night, I sit outside on the porch and listen the the peace. You know, all silences do not sound the same? I read it in a book one time. Even on summer nights like this, when there is quiet...you still hear the crickets chirping, sometimes the flutter of a moth's wings...the thin squeal of a swing rocking in the breeze, and the leaves wispering in that gentle wind. It doesn't sound the same as a winter night. Nothing hardly stirs, and when the wind blows, it's harsher as it howls past bare, ice-jacketed branches."
