“Legs don’t fail me now!” he huffed, “Why in Lyss’s name did you let that one guard go! Now we are exposed!”
To make matters worse more security arrived; on the other end of the ramp a large group of guards also found who they were looking for. All three of them put the breaks on their current destination and backtracked to the middle. This surly had to be the end.
Out of all the circumstances in fate, the luckiest moment interfered with securities plans. Quickly as they backed away to the center of the ramp, a door popped open only feet away from them, and out that door came Stella of the Devine with holy beads in one hand and a loaf of half eaten bread in the other. “Get in you three!” quickly she commanded.
Once they entered the room they saw Stella prepare for a blast, “You get the left I will handle the right.”
Out of nowhere they heard Caedo reply, “left it is, on my signal, one, two, go!”
Two orbs of power gathered at the front and back of Stella, one aiming for the right and one for the left. In Stella’s hands, one was composed of a swirling fire, as it churned itself together a whispered scream spin tightly into that echoing energy. On the back of Stella came an orb like her concentrated energy only this orb of Caedo’s was almost completely black, swirling in blues and violets from the desert’s night. His sounded as if a moan of the dead accelerated with speed and pitch until the very sound resembled that of a screaming child.
Both were shot at the same time, the orb’s screamed as they cannoned two both sets of fighters. Stella took out all the guards with her blast, as soon as it hit one it burst into thousands of pieces of burning debris, the male it hit was completely crisped, while the others desperately tried to put out their clothing if they still lived. The marble surrounding the area was scorched. On the other side, Caedo’s blast did not take death of any Sendrah, instead the dark orb over took their pupils, which in most cases to a Sendrah is worse than death itself. The darkness widened their eyes and then disappeared with a flash of white burning magnesium. Needless to say, they became plagued with blindness.
She continued to eat as fast as she could to replenish her weak energy, “in lets go!”
Caedo appeared and helped Stella stay on her feet, “we are taking you down a secret shoot. The only problem is going to be getting the Reilena down there.”
“We don’t have her.” Deleo was ashamed.
“You don’t have her yet!” Caedo was shocked, “after all that time, you haven’t-”
“No! But we know where she is,” Frey added, “at this moment she is at the queal stalls.”
“How do you know this?” Caedo slapped his head in frustration, “you let her slip though you fingers didn’t you?”
“A woman took her, a woman of the shadow perhaps you know her, since you are half.” Frey wondered.
“There hasn’t been a shadow daemon let alone a woman shadow daemon here for years, ever since my mother Quintessa…wait, wah, what did this woman look like!” his excitement built as he shook Frey’s shoulders. “Tell me now what did she look like.”
“uh…” Frey gathered his thoughts, “She had skin, very pale skin…and beautiful hair.”
“Was it curling? Were her eyes deep? How white was her skin? How did she speak?” he was too anxious to hear the answers.
“She spoke so softly, and her hair curled like a cherub, her eyes were as black as her hair, she was powerful when she went into shadow, she held me and the Reilena in shadow with power still remaining.”
“That’s her!” Caedo squealed with delight, “She is here in the palace! I can’t believe she is back!”
Jouanpae pondered, “Perhaps to see the Reilena…or just to make off with her.”
“We will just have to trust her, Jouanpae.” Frey fought, “I could do nothing else.”
“She is to her word!” he snapped but became softer due to their confusion; after all she did birth Noctom. “You can trust my mother, oh I have not seen you in years!”
Stella held back the heavy tapestry to open the secret passage that lead them to the queal stalls, “I would hate to end your chat but we don’t have much time before we hear the reaction of-” Suddenly there was a woman’s scream outside the room, “… of the citizens…great.”
“Lets go!” Caedo waved them on to the large passageway behind the wall. The closer Jouanpae got, the more he realized it was one large slide.
“I told you it was a shoot,” Stella replied, “its for desperate times like this, for the royal family.”
“But of course I consider you part of the royal family for being the son of Nasha and Sancho.” Caedo hurried to get the three in there and gave them the nearest bead sheets, “Now go on these blankets and we will follow after.”
They first pushed Deleo down this slide, of course he and Noctom use to use these passages, as they were children so he was use to this speed. However when Frey went down he screamed as he flew, Caedo looked to Stella who appeared to be worried. “Don’t worry there is a lot of stone there to isolate sound.”
Jouanpae went next but he also wasn’t quite ready as he slipped and fell on his way down, he was flying feet first sliding along his round jubilant belly.
Caedo being a gentle man aided Stella down the slide holding her within his grasp just in case. He knew how delicate she was, being a Devine there are benefits to the great powers, however using so much from the body leaves the corpse week. He did not want her hitting her head anywhere on the slide and passing out, after all she did omit that powerful blast that took out almost twenty guards, more or less; he did not have time to count.
On they went down the slide though the many stories they had left, Jouanpae did enjoy being off his feet but not like this, hopefully he would not run into Frey. The scream did get louder as he slid; Jouanpae would have plenty of warning. The slide curved slightly as it wrapped around the side of the castle, they hugged the walls as it went on this constant turn, at the speeds they were going at, the five of them could remain vertical.
The ride did not last more than a minuet, Deleo fell on his hands into the sands, but Frey quickly broke his save once he exited, Deleo could only panic when he remembered Jouanpae following after them. As he tried to scurry away, Jouanpae fell right outside the entrance of the slide; he had more control than Frey. He sighed in relief.
Suddenly Caedo and Stella shot into Jouanpae’s arms, he fell back on their impact, Jouanpae collapsed onto Frey and according to that domino effect Deleo was forced back to eating sand.
The room they entered was empty and full of sand; there was no light in the room until Stella held up a small flame in her hand. Stella muttered as quietly as she could, “Is everyone alright?”
Deleo spat out as much as he could, but his mouth still felt grainy.
“No broken bones,” Jouanpae whispered.
“Good,” Stella searched for the exit, on the other side of the room there was a rough ladder in the stonewall, “Here we go.” She stuck her hands into the groves and made her way up to a wooden door that was cut into the ceiling. She tried to push up the door but it was just too heavy. Frey eagerly stepped in to help out the woman he loved, within a few pushes he broke into the night air. He was also bombarded with sand; thankfully he shut his eyes in time.
Inside the queal stalls they heard all the queals beat their feat upon their sudden arrival, there was a mixture of hisses and coos as they flapped their heavy wings. Frey helped pull Stella out of the sunken room next Deleo followed and then Caedo. Jouanpae refused to have help out of the hole but he refused any aid due to his pride. Deleo and Frey just pulled their hands back to themselves but kept at his side just in case he should slip.
“Finally you are here, I have guarded this forever!” the tiger daemon was excited to see them make it.
Frey franticly pulled out his dagger to this tall Sendrah who guarded the stalls.
“Put that away you idiot!” Caedo laughed, “Durontae, how are things, is it active here.”
“Pretty calm until I scared your friend,” he chuckled with his hardy lungs, “no guards here since I am on patrol.” He pulled down his left eye to show a faint black mark on the left of his eyelid. He remembered now that Levene and the shadow woman mentioned a man to help them on their way out. Anyone with a black mark on his or her eye tonight was friendly to the rebellion.
“The Reilena is just under that blanket over there,” Durontae turned to point behind him, “the shadow daemon delivered it”
“Did she appear?” Caedo’s eyes grew.
“Afraid not, didn’t even know it was a she,” he pondered, “didn’t even know we had shadow daemons in this palace besides you and Noctom. Thought they were all gone.”
“They are…I believe that woman was my mother.”
“You mean Queen Quintessa? She hasn’t been here ever since Noctom was what? Four?”
“I believe she is back, only Frey saw her.”
“Well I heard the news that Cassius and Noctom are dead, perhaps that may be why she is here.”
Caedo could only hope, “perhaps.”
Frey filled up the canteens by dipping them in the animal troths; it was better to have queal water than no water at all. “Thank you for doing this. It is appreciated.”
“No problem, just don’t pull out a knife again on me, I may end up hurting you.”
Stella tried to get a move on with the night; she did not want them to get caught. “Well we got some pretty bad damage tonight and I know I am going to take the heat of the blame but since I am Devine I will not die from this, however if you get caught being an accomplice you will die.”
“How many did you kill tonight?”
“In my reading earlier tonight, there were exactly nineteen who would pass.”
“Eesh! Have you reached that?” Durontae asked.
“Yes,” she grabbed a clubbing stick from his belt, “but I need to protect you from them so…” suddenly she bashed his head.
Instantly he grabbed his skull in pain. “Some protection!”
“No problem,” her smile was sharp, “when I get back I will make it heal faster, but for tonight you were clubbed by Deleo. It’s the only way of proof that you were not with us. Either a bump on your head or a sword to the neck.”
“Well,” he held his throbbing head, “I have three of the fastest queals prepared. To get them to go, say “Tet Tet Tet!” and to get them to stop say “Arket!” pull their reins right and left whichever way you desire to go. Don’t show anything white to it or Medra help you if you wear it; they are trained to kill anything that holds that color. On the stalls they were named, this gigantic one is called Blaze. This second and third one I know, the small one is female, her name is Sapphire, she is very calm and she loves to eat apples. This big one here is named Nickademous, but more commonly he is called Red cause there was a slight coloration in his feathers in his mane. He pointed out the crimson oddities, “See the three red feathers, no mater what they always grow back red. He is very domineering, I don’t know how he will act toward Blaze but I’m sure they should not be too much of a problem.”
Deleo picked up the Reilena and put her in the straps of the queal named Red, he hopped on behind her and pulled the leather straps on tight so that she would not fall off. Frey watched Deleo very closely and followed the same movements of Deleo; he jumped up on the smaller one, Sapphire. Jouanpae was the challenge though, he was always afraid of queals, he saw how they tore up his troops limb by limb. The blood splattered all over the green grass with just one gigantic bite. Hesitantly he got to the side of the queal. Blaze glanced back casually with his silver eyes; it could smell his fear.
“You have no white on, it will not harm you.” Durontae repeated.
It took some time for Jouanpae to trust the queal, but once he did, he hopped up on it wrong. The bird collapsed to the weight he forced upon it as he tried to get on with his belly. “No, no, no, you get on by lowering the queal and then letting him rise for you, since you are new to this.”
As he was practicing to get on, Stella walked up to Frey who sat high on the queal. “Stella, I know this must be hard for you to take in at this stressful moment, and I know you have another man who has taken your heart, I just want you to know that I will love you.”
“I know you do,” She smiled. “You taught me the basics of being Devine, maybe some day when times are peaceful you can come back to the palace and I can teach you the specializations.” They caught eyes with each other, blue mixing with blue. “No, Frey I can’t leave, I must stay here, my place is of this palace now. You can beg but it will get you nowhere. When times are peaceful.”
He bent down to give her a kiss, but all she let him kiss was her forehead, “Goodbye Frey, to the brighter future.”
“And may the law be light on you.” Frey warned her, “If you come you could escape your punishment.”
“I already told you, besides I have my husband to worry about.” Stella patted his queal, “good luck.”
Frey could have died inside, what happened to her?
“Alright I am on,” Shouted Jouanpae in victory, “lets get out of here!”
They waved good-bye to Caedo, Durontae and Stella. The queals picked up their striding pace and before they knew it, the four on the queals became mere dots in the distance. It would not be long until they would reach home again.
