Yesterday I was attacked by a bear. That's right Winnie the Pooh tried to eat my kidney's for lunch. Tasty right! Here's the full story.
I was biking to pick cucumbers on my Uncle Kevin's property. I do this nearly every day and I have had no trouble with bears so far. This time however as I was coming around the 2nd corner in the road I came face to face with a mother bear and her cub. I screamed in shock and the cub went straight up the tree that was right on the corner but the mom came towards me. Leo went straight for her, barking like the nut he is. He chased her to the right side of the path.
But she came back towards me.
By this time I was off my bike and I pushed it towards her enough to scare her. She backed away and Leo charged her again, this time driving her to the left side of the road. I picked up my bike and putting it between me and where the bear was I started to back up. This was when the bear came forward AGAIN. She was smacking the ground with her paws and snorting a lot. Every time I backed up a she would step forward. Leo was barking and barking And trying to get her to leave. Finally after what seemed like for ever she ran off towards the left side again. When she was about ten feet off she turned around. This time I screamed, loudly and high pitched as you know I do. She snorted and kind of started pacing. Leo turned back and looked at me and then ran after the bear again.
Not wanting to seem like a target I began slowly backing away dragging my bike with me between me and where the bear was. The bear was chased about twenty feet back into the woods and then Leo started following me. Still walking slowly backwards every time it seemed like the bear was going to come toward the road again I took a deep breath and screamed. Once I was out of sight I only did it every thirty or so seconds to make sure the bear wouldn't follow. Once I hit the gate though I guess the adrenaline or whatever wore off and I burst into tears. I ran all the way home pushing my bike.
When I got into the house I screamed for my mom and she came running. By the time she got me and Leo calmed down we had decided she would come with me and help me pick cucumbers. She drove us in and the whole time we were their Leo was very jumpy and anxious. When we got home I called Uncle Kevin to explain about the bear and tell him to go pick up the cucumbers. He showed up very upset at my house. He's determined to shoot both the cub and mother if we see them again but I don't want him to because that would be mean.
Later in the afternoon my dad finally called because Mom left him a message at work telling him to call home. We told him what happened and he reported it to the bear people at M & R's. The lady called back when I was down at Grandma and Grandpa's doing the pickles so Dad had to call them when he got home from work. I talked to a guy to tell him exactly what happened with the bear and he said that I had 'done everything right' but 'the dog might have irritated her'.
Yeah right because she wasn't totally coming for me before hand. Leo saved my life and no one who wasn't there can tell me differently. And you can be bloody sure that I shared my leftover steak lunch with him!
