The Tale of Two (Not So Likely) Lovers

Prologue

Waking up around early dawn, Tristan Drynmire sat up in his bed remembering with a groan that he had a Council Meeting to attend in less than maybe two hours to an hour and a half. His wife lay beside him, now asleep since she had completely woken him as she had promised to do. He smiled at her and kissed her cheek before rolling out of bed and stretching. He rolled his shoulders a bit before resting his hands on his thighs and glancing at his wife again. There was a time when just to annoy her- he'd be as loud as possible when getting up but then, without her rather useful ability to wake up when she had to automatically, he would be scolded later when he showed up late to the Council Meeting.

He had to smile. The first time he had shared a bed with his wife, she had a knife and kept it with her all night long. It took a long time for them to start believeing that they weren't going to just ram a knife in the other's back in the middle of the knight. He touched her gently, which was enough to make her roll over, making sure the covers were tucked under her arms so that her nakedness was not revealed. She smiled at him, a small smile and asked in her calm voice, her eyes totally serene, "Do you need something, dearest?" The 'dearest' crack was her way of getting on his nerves. They never called each other pet names unless they felt like poking fun.

"Are you sure you won't come?" He asked her kindly.

She took on a thoughtful look as she glanced at the bed, her eyes looked around, not really searching but giving her an excuse to take her time thinking. That used to annoy him, as well. Then again, this marriage used to annoy him, a little over a year ago it had. She looked up at him and nodded. "I'll go with you, but only because you look far too tired to keep your temper."

He smiled and leaned back, turning his head a bit to kiss her gently on the lips. "I don't know why I ever complained about marrying you, Helen."

She scoffed. "I do. I was raised to hate Celdonia but I never did. You had been raised the reverse and seemed to have no problem hating me outright. Don't you remember?"

He grinned wryly. "Yes, I remember. By the by, Gwyn wanted to compliment how quickly you lost all the wieght you gained from the pregnancy. She's jealous of you for it, by the way. Not only are you more so radiant from being with child, but you recover better and faster than her too."

This made her laugh. He had always loved her laugh. "That made my day!"

He grinned a little more. "You're horrible." Getting up and heading to the outer room, after dressing, Tristan saw his brother, Damin, with Tristan's infant son, telling him a story.

"You may not know it, little one," he began. "but your mum and dad didn't always see eye to eye, much less get along. It all started sometime last summer..."
