I'm signing up as we speak... For those of you who don't know, NaNoWriMo, or National Novel Writing Month, is a contest in November. Your goal is to write 50,000 words during the course of the month of November. You start the second November starts, you end at midnight on the last night of the month. I tried it last year... It's a b*h. Seriously But I'm trying again... AND I NEED YOUR HELP!! Okay, I have two story ideas, and I can't pick which one I should go with. Both seem good to me, so here's a short summary of each: The Ice Gate A young college student stumbles across a magnificent gate of ice, and meets a mythical creature who decides that she must go across the world to find the Masks, a group of people scattered across the world, who, when their masks are removed, become fantastic creatures and gods. Shikigami A woman, distraught at the loss of her boyfriend, creates an artificial one (similar to a Golem), using magic and alchemy. It struggles to understand why it exists; it's Master's explaination doesn't cut it. Over time, the two become close, but all isn't as it seems when the woman's book on her methods goes public. 	Full Summary, Ice Gate While wandering the hills outside her college on a rainy day, Erin discovers a river of boiling ice that leads to a massive forest (that had never existed in her reality; go figure that one.) Deep in this forest, she finds a waterfall. Behind this waterfall, she finds the Ice Gate, and its Gatekeeper, Ode. Ode is man who, by premise of becoming Gatekeeper, has been turned into a satyr. Ode tells her that it’s not mere chance that she found the Gate, and that she is now bound to sign a contract to become the new Ferrier; the mystical person that bonds the world of magic and the world of the mundane. Being the Ferrier entails an arduous task; to find and release this generation of Masks. The Masks are what seem to be normal people, usually with some odd quirks. When brought to a Gate (there are several; a Fire Gate, an Air Gate...no Water Gate; that would be weird,) the Masks they were born with can be removed. Like lifting off their own face, their human bodies melt into their true form, be it that they were truly a unicorn, a kitsune, or even a god. Erin isn’t without tools in this task. Seeing as she is going to have to travel all over the world, if only for a few moments per trip, Ode gives her a gift no other could. Erin, too, is a Mask, but not the same as any other the others. Being the Ferrier, she can go back and forth between forms. Her other form is phantom feline. The only reason for it is that her feline form can move through shadows, enabling her to go from, say, her home to London, England. (In addition, the simple umbrella she was carrying the day she became the new Ferrier has been endowed with the power of ice. It now extends into a halberd made almost entirely of burning ice, in case of emergencies and such.) Ripping up your life in the middle of college isn’t exactly easy, especially when you have a boyfriend of two years who keeps asking where you’re going every evening; why you’re missing class so much, and why you’re ignoring him. Damian Park is normally a trusting man, but he’s begun to worry about his girlfriend, and, as he’s planning, his soon-to-be fiancé. Throw in the fact that Ode is a conniving b***d hoping to force her to extend her contract to becoming the new Gatekeeper, therefore freeing himself...and toss in the fact that Damian is a Mask with the true form of the frickin’ God of Death... 	Full Summary, Shikigami When Jessete’s fiancé leaves her for a man, she couldn’t be more heartbroken. She supports his new lifestyle, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t miss him. Well versed in her own brands of magic and alchemy (stemming from a variety of traditions,) she decides to create a new man, one of her own designs. She creates a man out of magic itself (mana, life force, whatever...), one not of flesh, so he can be molded and reshaped as needed. She models him after an angel, complete with wings. When her angel awakes, she names him Eros, after the God of Love, hoping that he can help her find true love again, not thinking that it would be him. Eros knows nothing about the world; he’s as simple and curious as a five year old at first. Other than teaching by example, Jessete can teach him by blowing the thought to him. (i.e. he wants to know what fear is; she’d concentrate on ‘fear’ and send it to him in a breath. All metaphysically. Yeah.) Jessete’s friends are shocked, amazed, and jealous when they meet Eros. Of course, everyone can see this new man, whether she likes it or not. He draws a bit of attention in a crowd. He quickly learns how to behave in public, and soon all of her friends are asking her to make them “one of ‘em”. Desperate to get everyone off her back, she decides to write an instructional book to teach everyone exactly what she did. One of her friends decides to get it published. All hell breaks loose. The book becomes a bestseller, upsetting the religious community and upstaging even the most energetic preacher. Metaphysics has now been proven, physically. Now everyone around the world is trying to make their own ‘Eros’ Some people don’t exactly have good intentions with these new ‘methods’. Someone, somewhere, decides to make a serial killer with them. People are worrying about this turn of events, and wondering if perhaps their ‘Eros’ might take a turn for the worse. All the while, Jessete can’t help but realize that she really is falling in love with Eros, no matter what she wants to think! A young woman by the name of Rebecca starts a smear campaign to stop the insanity, claiming that Jessete is an inferior monster who wants to turn the world order on its head. Writing from a Fundamentalist Christian standpoint, and calling herself “Jessete 2.0” (in reference to the desired ‘reformed’ Jessete Martin), she calls for the destruction of the original ‘demon’, Eros. Despite Jessete’s attempt at damage control with her own blog, and a campaign of her own (against Jessete 2.0), things aren’t going well. The “golem” serial killer is still on the loose, and it looks like Jessete has either recruited it...or maybe she created it in the first place! Soon, there are attempts made on Jessete’s life, and on Eros’s! Now it’s a race against time to stop Jessete 2.0 before she causes something everyone is going to regret!
