The Elizabethan Era
- The Elizabethan Era was the period in time when Queen Elizabeth I reigned, from 1558–1603.
- This era is often considered to be the golden age, during the height of the renaissance, where literature and poetry grew rapidly.
- The Elizabethan Era was seen as an important period in history since all of the arts flourished, including acting and play writing.
- William Shakespeare was a famous and important man of this era.
- During this era, England’s economy boomed and the country became very wealthy.
- In 1565 Sir Thomas Gresham founded “the Royal Exchange”. It was one of the first stock markets ever created and greatly affected the world’s economy.
- Even though the country was growing wealthy, most of the peasants were still poor and had rough living conditions.
- In the era before Queen Elizabeth came to the throne, England was constantly at war, but after queen Elizabeth became the monarch, England became relatively more peaceful and there was very little wars or rumors of wars.
- The persecution of witches in this era was not very common, but it still occurred throughout parts of the country.
- William Gilbert made significant scientific progress during this era, and published a book called “De Magnete” which talked about his research and experiments on magnetism.
- Famous explorers also existed in this era, such as Sir Francis Drake, who circumnavigated the globe from 1577-1581, and Martin Frobisher who explored the Arctic from 1535 to 1594.
- People from the Elizabethan era had many forms for entertainment, such as feasting, plays, fairs, festivals, banquets and hunting.
-Jousting was also a common form of entertainment during this era. This was a tournament for knights to fight against each other, usually for a prize. The prize may be awarded in money, status, or even the marriage of a beautiful lady.
- Hawking was also another common sport during the Elizabethan era. Hawking is a type of hunting which uses bird, usually hawks to hunt down the prey.
- In 1564, Guilliam Boonen created the first coach for Queen Elizabeth. This then lead to a new trend in stylish and efficient transportation.
