In Marietta Georgia, about a year and a half ago, I was pacing my living room floor, rather franticly at that. I am not usually a hyper person, but today was my first day off ever and I was actually bored. I know, I know. Any normal person would enjoy a day off with their family or something… not me! Sure, life in the culinary fast lane was hectic, but I liked it that way I suppose. All this quiet was driving me crazy!
As I paced back and forth, my chocolate lab, Bella watched me intently. Even she could enjoy her day off by laying there on the rug, her golden eyes following my feet. I stopped in my tracks right in front of her. Bella looked up at me. “Ah Bella…” I said, crouching down to scratch her velvety ear, “we will find something to do…right?”
Bella didn’t reply, but tilted her head to make sure I scratched the right part of her ear. I was offended at her silence until I remembered that she couldn’t reply- she was, in fact, a dog.
I sighed. “I need to get out of here…” I said, standing up and returning to my pacing. This time I took a few steps, then detoured and headed for my computer desk. I sat down in the chair and booted up the computer. The date and time showed up in the lower right hand corner of the screen: November 7, 2005 10:21 am
I had forty new messages, most of which were from fans of “Good Eats” that had gotten a hold of my e-mail address, but I wasn’t nearly as famous as Alton yet, so that’s why so few messages from them. But I got some good mail too- after replying to all of my other messages I was amazed at what I found. One message was from Tyler Florence, asking if I would like to join him for a shooting of “Tyler Ultimate” next week; another from Bobby and Jamie Deen, congratulating me on becoming co-writer and actress on “Good Eats” and that they cant hardly wait for my new show “Culinary Crafters” to air.
Pretty basic stuff- I told Tyler that I would be honored to join him and I would see Jamie and Bobby in a month if they would like to join me on MY show. Scrolling through the rest of my messages, I stumbled upon one that nearly had me leave my chair- a message from Alton Brown himself. I mean, we spoke enough at work, but this was great!
I read the message about a thousand times, my elation growing every time the words rang through my head:
“Hi there, Alton here, How have you been lately? I know we don’t have a lot of time to chat on the set, which is a shame, due to the fact that you seem like an incredible chef and a truly amazing individual! If it is not to much trouble, go ahead and give me a call at the number below and we will do lunch somewhere and just hang out. Sound like fun? If so, don’t ever be afraid to call me.”

I really hope to see you soon. -Alton
I almost screamed.
